The HD collection is fine now that it's been patched. I ran into some minor slowdowns in SH3 and one cutscene was out of sync, otherwise SH2 and 3 played fine and looked fantastic. I understand HD collection was broken at launch by I really don't get the massive amount of hate it still gets post patch.

I mean, other than people being nostalgic for the versions they played 10 years ago, which I get but still.

The hate is less due to bugs and more due to deliberate changes that were made, like the new voice recordings. The old voices are terrible, but in a way that served the atmosphere and the weird, stilted delivery ended up being iconic of the series.

Seriously, how did the franchise turn itself around before immediately going to poo poo again with the follow-up? Sonic Boom looks like it's basically the "Pac-Man and the Ghostly Adventures" of the Sonic franchise.

But whatever, that franchise will never die. Silent Hill? Maybe.

Sonic Boom is just...just awful. I watched a video of the first, uh, level I guess, and I have no idea how someone designed this and thought "Yeah. Yeah, okay so this Sonic game that features brawling combat and almost no running, this is good. Also, lovely templated platforming segments in a lifeless environment. Yeah, this is great, let's make this."

Everyone is going on about Knuckles' design, but I think that's the absolute least of the game's problems.

Now that I'm older and jaded, I don't expect any horror game to have the same impact of the first 10 minute demo I played of Silent Hill as an 11-year-old (prior to the cafe scene). That intro was just a masterpiece. They even reused it for the movie.

I finally got the courage to rent it, and as soon as the night set in when you go through that house back door with the Woodsman's key or whatever, I almost had to turn it off again. The school felt so scary since it was similar to my actual school at the time. The hospital, too.

SH2 I was a bit older and less timid, but I remember loving the endless falling down holes during that wonderful sequence from the historical society to the old prison. I thought that was the creepiest level in 2.

One of my fondest gaming memories was playing the original Silent Hill in my dorm lounge at night with an audience. Everyone would chat and giggle about the weird stuff at first, but after a few minutes into the school or the hospital they'd get deadly quiet.

Thank you. I get nostalgia for the original voices, but having played through SH2 and 3 with the new voices and listening to cut scenes with the original voices, I think I made the right choice for myself. The actor who does James in SH2 is soooo much better than the original, and his dialogue ends up having some actual weight to it instead of sounding like bad B-movie dialogue. I get the charms of the B-movie voice work, because it works for something like the original RE or the first SH but when the story is something deeper like SH2, you need a little more nuance to it than what we got in the original recordings.

Also, the original Heather was obnoxious as hell and I would have hated that game even more if I'd had to spend 7 hours listening to her.

One of the reasons I'll never play the HD version is what they did to the fog, it basically butchers any creepy atmosphere the game has, especially in the boat scene:

Yeah. I was so excited about this collection, and then found it it was... so bad. I think SH3 also has some really serious issues too.

Pretty sure those screenshots were pre-patch and it has improved (no it is not perfect but you can also get both for a reasonable price and play it on a console that hooks up to LCD/HDTVs without horrible motion blur).

I will in no way argue that it's better than the original, but they are acceptable and cheap versions for people to play at this point.

To my knowledge the 360 remains unpatched, but the PS3 is very playable. I could be wrong on that.

No way. The new James in SH2 comes off as an over the top dramatic play actor. It's horrible. All the new voices are. Especially Heather. I don't know how you can think the new one sounds less obnoxious. Look at the first scene when she goes "A detective? Really?" It's so sarcastic and snarky compared to the original's okay, whatever attitude. The new Heather doesn't sound like a teenager anymore and she also sounds too over confident.

I really like the (almost certainly deliberate) awkwardness of the original dialogue, it sort of reminds me of a david lynch film where all the characters act super inhuman and it gives off this unnerving atmosphere.

I've never heard the new voices though.

I don't come to Silent Hill to hear dramatic performances. Complaining about the performances in original SH 2 is missing the whole point. They fit the tone of that game perfectly.

Fair enough, but personal preference and all that.

Also, don't buy the 360 version, it didn't get patched, the PS3 version did. And there were no issues with fog or anything else in SH2 on the patched version. SH3 had one scene where the audio and animation were out of sync and some slowdowns like it was loading, otherwise both ran smoothly

As someone who never played any of these games until a few months ago, playing the HD collection was my cheapest option, and one I don't regret, as both games looked great and played well (despite 3's minor issues)

Eddie was perfect, he was exactly what I expected from a broken childish sociopath.

Angela was great too once you figure out what she's all about and then all of her awkward, child-like dialog just makes sense in an instant.

From what the original VA for James said over the years, the dialogue and it's fitting awkwardness was a very happy accident. I don't thing the director even spoke English. Aslo, James' VA hated Maria's VA

So yeah, basically if you don't want to spend obscene amounts of money on the games and aren't going to sperg out about voices, get the HD collection on PS3.

Also yeah, I've stayed out of the SH fan community because it's spergin all over the place.

I enjoyed the games for what they were so that is ultimately what matters right, not what voices you play with.

Seriously though, I haven't touched SH4 in almost a month now and I'm legit dreading picking it back up because its so god drat frustrating. I give no ducks about what ending I get because I ditched my escort in the subway and I think she's possessed now, but meh, gently caress her.

You can completely ignore the escort in that game and still get the best ending (via a bit of an exploit), either way though it sounds like you arent enjoying the game so you should probably just stop playing it.

It really doesn't matter in the end though, because you can do 99% of the playthrough perfectly while aiming for the Good Ending and if you gently caress up even one little part of it you get the Bad Ending.

I only played that game on a rental though so I wasn't that invested in it. I was kind of irritated when I got to the final part only for Eileen to just walk straight into the water and die after all the poo poo I went through.

Yes, stopping would be the sensible thing to do, but drat it I have integrity and I'm going to play through all of these games and write about them!

Seriously, I come up with these ideas like "I'm going to play horror games and write about them" or "I'm going to watch awful movies and write about them" without actually thinking through the consequences, and I wont quit unless my spirit has been broken, which SH4 has yet to do.

So basically, I'm an idiot sometimes.

Basically I loving hated every moment of playing SH4, but I still look back upon it fondly because it did so many cool things with its atmosphere and setting. It's a failure as a game, but there's something really compelling about it in spite of this. I would probably still take it over better playing, but far more generic games like Homecoming,

I know its more of an action game but did opinions of RE6 ever improve with patches and updates? I'm considering buying it on steam because I love Resident Evil as a whole and I think the monster designs look really cool. Caveat is that I don't have any friends to do co-op up with but is it an alright experience if I go in with low expectations? A horrible plot doesn't bother me very much since I enjoyed RE5 and the 3ds one and those had pretty stupid plots. If its at least..slightly better than Silent Hill Homecoming I'm probably going to buy it but I'm interested in the consensus here.

It is not even remotely scary, and the plot is just as horrible as everyone says. The interface is bad as usual. If you expect a dumb clunky game about killing monsters you should be fine.
