Huh, that's interesting in this Monster Pulse update. Maybe Violet isn't the actually in charge of this situation after all. It looks her monster is influencing/controlling her.

Octopus Pie is crammed full of little one panel gags like that, it's a fantastic comic to re-read and examine all the stuff going on in it.

I feel like it was a story where a girl basically groomed herself into being a vessel for a weird fungus hate alien through the decisions she made based on the interactions she had with it. I think at the end he didn't take her over or consume her like he did to the region he desolated but they actually merged together.

I'm going to consider it more like a short web comic story. It built up a lot then ended quickly. That said, given the details we were provided, I'm not sure where else you'd take the story, so I'm not really that upset at how it ended.

It was pretty much "welp" the webcomic. Lots of things going wrong but you just don't give a gently caress

I feel like it would have had more impact without the 'flash forward to the future' bit I think I remember someone saying that something like that had been the original plan??? Am I remembering that right? I dunno, I didn't dislike exactly, and the art was pretty good throughout. I liked the color scheme.

i suspect judging by that last bit of dialogue (and jessie's characterization in general) that the fusion is not unequal. she didn't kill the monster, but she very well may have neutralized most of its potential for ill. which is about as good an ending as she could hope for, really.

I took away something completely different from Apothecia. She's not "merging" or "hosting" the monster, she's becoming one. Like Hogs said, the monster was grooming her the whole time, but I think it was grooming her to take it's place. It's basically "How to train your protege (Who will become an intergalactic mass-murderer)" the webcomic.

On the other hand, the artist said this. I don't think the writer has chimed in on that though

Speaking as someone who was close to Shelby (and Taz, to a much lesser degree) for a couple of years in college, yeah, that definitely sounds like something the two of them would do, unabashedly. I can't say I personally cared for Apothecia much, especially after the timeskip. They took 89 pages to tell a horror story that probably could have been told much more powerfully in 15 or 20. Then again, I'm hardly a stranger to pacing issues myself, so throwing stones from glass houses, I suppose.

Jackard posted:Its no Em Caroll thats for sure I picked up her book, and it's one of the best things I've seen--absolutely gorgeous and paced perfectly--but I wish there were a little more tonal variation on her endings, because by the end of the volume I felt there wasn't much sting. If, for example, the final story had turned out very lighthearted, that might reflect poorly on the volume as a whole, but one happy ending somewhere along the line would have put me in the position to feel more suspense.

The alien's dialogue in Apothecia was great but everything else about it was a goddamn mess, even the art (adult Jessie's proportions change from page to page and there's not a whole lot of actual detail except in the alien's many, many faces). Jessie's motivations were really poorly communicated, which is odd because "blow up world-eating alien cuz gently caress you" is a fairly understandable motive, and the ending was just a way to ram in the "THEY'RE NOT SO DIFFERENT AFTER ALL, SEE, SEE" conceit one more time. Still, it was short and updated often and ended early. And again, the alien's dialogue. Got to steal those lines for something sometime.
