I bought it in May and it is a bad, boring game that I don't recommend playing even if you can get it for $10.

Besides the storage space difference and racial analogies, Is there anything different between the Basic and Deluxe Wii U? Is there a storage addon I can buy and install to give the basic more space?

Externals with their own power supply are more recommended than others, but some people have said hooking up their externals with Y-cables works fine (personally this did not work for me).

You can buy any external drive, preferably with its own power source. The deluxe comes with a charging cradle.

You can put in any USB HDD and even USB keys to expand on space. Deluxe comes with Wii's sensor bar, a stand for both the console and game pad, and a cradle. Also, some bonus credit stuff if you buy digital games, but it's ending at the end of the year. Just go with whatever's cheaper.

Isn't this a huge pain in the rear end because you have to turn a switch on every time you want to play the WiiU? I mean I understand how lazy that makes me sound, but turning the WiiU on by the gamepad only to have to go up to the TV, flick on a hard drive switch, and restart the system seems kind of annoying. Either that or have an external hard drive turned on 24/7? I was able to get my external working with a Y-cable but I do get the "you unplugged the hard drive!!!!" error once in a while (if the system has been idled for a very long time).

Are you actually complaining about flicking a switch? You've put more effort in reading this post than turning a hard drive on.

I don't know about the WiiU but the HDD plugged into my Wii is plugged into the wall but will turn off when I turn the console off. Is that not the same with the WiiU?

I'm one of the blubbering fools planning to buy a WiiU (just) for Xenoblade Chronicles X, so for the sake of friends eventually doing the same thing; Would it be a PS360-with-tiny-HD like experience with the 8gb unit, and we'd be fine just jamming a USB stick in for (extra) storage of patches and saves and whatnot? Not allergic to loadtimes.

It's kind of recommended you don't. Some people have gotten away with it, others have had a lot of trouble with it. Also, unless you live in the UK, I can't think of a good reason to grab a Basic Wii U, except for perhaps second-hand shopping.

The Wii U doesn't really have games that install poo poo to the HD, so as long as you never plan on downloading games the 8gb unit will be more than fine.\ e: But it's been recommended several times by people not to use flash drives for storage.

You say that, but I've been running into space issues with the 8 GB WiiU just with game updates and DLC (and a few VC games but they don't add up to more than a gig), and that's only going to get worse as more games come out.

All the new 32gb models include a game or two depending on the bundle. There is no reason not to get Super Mario 3D World unless you are Hitler.

That's true. I think the Mario Kart DLC is about a gig. Where can you readily get an 8gb model though? The 32gb models that come bundled with games aren't really expensive.

I'm looking forward to picking it up (and selling/trading in the Skylanders stuff) since I only play 1 or 2 games at a time, and don't buy digital releases. Also, the white model looks cool.

I've never had an external hard drive with a switch on it. If I want to turn off the drive, I unplug it. I think maybe it also turns off when the device it's connected to (be it the wii u or my PC) is turned off.

Mine doesn't even turn off when the WiiU is off. I see it blinking sometimes and know an update must be downloading.

I just went through this and the short answer is don't switch the Wii U over to a wired connection. All of the USB adapters that interface it with ethernet are actually slower than a solid wireless N connection. I went ahead and spent the money on an ASUS RT-AC66U flashed with DD-WRT and couldn't be happier with it. You don't necessarily need AC but I bought future proofed hardware. If you just want an N router I'd suggest the ASUS RT-N66U flashed with DD-WRT. Would love to get a game with it or two and I know the quality, loved the little MK8 I played. I was thinking about waiting for a XenoChronX release-date, if it would get the usual Euro Nintendo treatment and delayed I would grab an import from Canada and save too much money, I could buy a cheap used one here in Sweden. Another reason I'd import: Nintendo still being bad about 50hz for PAL regions. It's been nearly 20 years since the last 50hz only TV was manufactured.

I'm using a 2TB Seagate which either: 1) doesn't have a power switch or 2) has a power switch that was turned on and I just never knew about it. My external turns on when I turn on the Wii U and then it shuts down shortly after I turn the Wii U off.

Just picked up a Wii Classic Controller, this thing is great for Virtual Console games, it's even better than the Pro Controller for that purpose. I can also now play Paper Mario since I foolishly wasted coins on it and didn't realize you couldn't use the gamepad or the pro controller while in Wii Classic mode.
