I imagine that it's slightly difficult to make anti-Semitism a mainstream part of your philosophy when one of its most respected figures outside the movement is called Eliezer Yudkowsky. Not impossible, sure (bizarre mental gymnastics are kind of this lot's stock in trade), but difficult.

HEY GAL posted:No, what changed his mind to be more sympathetic to racism? I think there was always some vague sympathy there. Scott's a classic case of White Dude Who Totally Supports Social Justice ... Until He Has To Give Something Up. At one point he was like "people said me and my friends, who are mostly white guys, have unconscious racism and sexism, but I know these guys and they're totally not racist or sexist." But SJ people kept pointing out that they almost certainly are in some ways, more and more aggressively, and he kept getting more and more hurt by it. This lead to several anti-SJ posts. Since he's never read any academic feminism or really any non-Tumblr feminism (a similar problem occurs with his understanding of socialism) he has a really weird idea of what most feminists actually believe or are like. ^^^^ Jim, as loudest and dumbest, and not Spandrell?

That, at least, is perfectly explicable, forum user Ugly In The Morning. Seriously, though, this is the internet. A whole lot of folks pick weird, quirky usernames without ever considering the possibility that they might someday become major figures. Hence why one of the more respected journalists covering the Arab Spring and its aftermath is called Brown Moses.

An adolescent drive to feel powerful by exerting control over something dangerous. I bet that a lot of them tent their fingers laugh maniacally to themselves when alone or in small groups, self-consciously emulating the supervillians they probably still read about each week at the comic book store.

There's a new Slate Star Codex up, about how On the Road is a book about awful people doing awful things and SSC dude did not like it. Good! But the best moment of all is this comment:Davis M. J. Aurini posted:The worst thing about this book is the echoes of my own past that I see within it; a decade spent being pulled between the glory of Lord of the Rings, and the cynical nihilism of modernity’s ‘self-actualization’.
