banks are pretty good at keeping poo poo under support. so the software may be old as gently caress, but it's either on new-ish hardware, or old hardware with a support contract to fix it when it breaks. see also: insurance, tori cmos etc

the oldest poo poo is at hospitals: they try to keep poo poo under support, but (non-IBM) support contracts only last so many decades. unlike banks with their perpetual ibm mainframe support, a lot of hospitals and healthcare groups were early adopters on pissant minicomputer firms.

school central offices fall into the "old hardware/old software on new hardware with support contract until the end of time" bucket too

even while the schools get new Dell workstations every year the records will be on an AS/400 forever and mail will be done on FirstClass forever

Tef is right, Java. Or c# now I guess, we'll see how that works out.

what's weird is that when I was writing java the challenge was trying to make it use less memory now the challenge is getting it to use more.

curse your debating skills

still gonna say eclipse is the most popular though, so if you don't want to be that guy who insists on using a different tool from everyone else in the team then it's probably worth getting comfortable with it

there is no excuse for writing java in emacs, and i say this as someone who reads email in emacs

its true in the sense that i haven't heard of big investment into intellij until recently.

google is switching the android IDE to an intellij core, and amazon is building out support for intellij in builder tools.

ive really tried to use eclipse twice while here because it is so well supported but the IDE is just dog poo poo.

if microsoft had open sourced visual studio or even just made it cross platform and made it less poo poo over the years maybe we wouldnt be in this situation.

So would it be fair to say eclipse is the most used but intellij is better? This is for a small project and it looks like the free version will do what I need.
