This isn't the Android app thread but as a user of both platforms, I'll say skip a hamburger tomorrow and buy Pocketcasts. Its an amazing app.

How is the subtitle support? The last time I touched the Windows 8 version, it would only work with external and basic subtitle files which is useless to me since most of the stuff (fansubbed anime) I watch has an advanced subtitle file(s) muxed in .mkv files.

I use moliplayer pro, it handles fansub mkvs fine.

There are millions of low end Android devices but holy poo poo, seems that Orange/Vodafone/Movistar have been gifting 520s they had on stock to every company because while moving two weeks ago, every worker that came to my new flat, used a windows phone and before that, I barely spotted a WP in Spain.

Tangentially related, but given you're developing audio apps for WP8.1 is the any way to switch to mono audio? I want to listen to full music using one earbud not half the stereo track.

Edit: Generally is there a way to change Cortana's units? I set an alarm just now for twelve-fifteen. It decided I wanted 12:15am so I had to reset it myself even though my phone settings are 24hr time. Did I say zero-fifteen? No I did not! Goddamn am/pm.

Generally how does Cortana/WP deal with location and units? I'm an Englishman in New York (sup Sting) so I like my units metric/SI, my time 24hr, my currency in USD, my date DD/MM/YYYY, my local searches to be US based, my accent to be picked up as British English. Can I mix and match this poo poo or is there just one global Region/Location setting? I know Cortana is region specific but in what sense and extent?

I for the life of me can't loving remember the password I used to install poo poo on my wife's windows account, as it is some outlook.com email that doesn't have a backup email. When I upgraded to 8.1, it deleted the password cache, and now every app on there is out of date. I made a new hotmail account for her, but I am worried that if I put in the new account and give up on the old account, it is going to delete every single thing on her phone.

This fell off from a few pages ago, and I was curious if anyone knew this? I think I can get MMS/pictures via text messaging working again if I update some stuff in 8.1 (wife says it worked before the 8.1 update), but I really can't remember/guess the password to her old account and I think I need to just make a new account for her as Microsoft's Live account recover does jack for me.

However I need to prepare for it if it goes and deletes like all of her settings/pictures/contacts when adding a new account.

I think it will delete everything. You can save the pictures on a PC or create a new Microsoft account and sign into OneDrive using the new account credentials before you replace your primary account.

You might also be able to chat with Microsoft support and see if they can add a secondary email address, then go through the steps to reset your password.

Hey, keep the noise down Jerk, this is a residential area.
Upgraded from my 8x at the weekend to a Lumia 930, there's a massive amount of extra software that Nokia put on here compared with what feels like the very basics from HTC, call and sms blocker is a very welcome addition.

The backup and restore process is fantastic, restored my 8x backup and everything was there apart from the single HTC app which was broken on the developer preview, and even when I was waiting for the sim swap to happen both phones text messages were in sync.

The 8x always felt fast even with the developer preview but the 930 is so much smoother in the newer games and the resuming screens are completely gone.

The 8x is a little easier to hold but both phones are the same depth, but the 930 being a little wider and taller.

Screen is fantastic, little warm compared the the 8x but that looks like it can be changed.

Overall, worth the upgrade.

Not sure theres a more lonely feeling than owning a Windows phone- in Canada.

I really want a smartwatch, but there seems to be little available with true compatibility with our phones. Certain things I can deal with, okay so I have to login to my bank via browser instead of having an app (no big deal, its only my bank right). I see my girlfriend playing some interesting games on her ijunk, but they just aren't about to be ported over for us. The Band might be okay but its not available up here yet, and I'm not sure I like the styling, and I don't need(want) the fitness part of it. At least I'm not really in a position to buy another flagship right now, or else I'd be very tempted to jump back to android.

There are a few interesting games that are only in WP, but there aren't many. With the exception of a few big apps, most don't get updated regularly and are missing features that the other platforms have. My wife traded in her 1020 for an iPhone 6, and I'm tempted to join her when my contract is up. I would consider Android, but I really don't like Google. Songarc is a cool game (ported to ios recently, maybe android?), and there are a couple others yes. I'm a hardcore gamer so I hate mobile games, but I see her playing quizup for example, that would be a nice time killer when I'm on the go. There just generally seems to be a mediocre quality app for something, or a fake bullshit piece of garbage that's really just a link to the webpage for something with extra ads, or there's nothing at all. I can still do everything I need to do but not well, and the performance on my 1020 has always been sluggish. I really want to support it because I don't enjoy the maintenance involved with android and I will never buy an apple device to save my life. I like the 830 and 930 looks cool, but you cant exactly rent one for a week to try it out. I need to be sure they can put out a quality, high performing device before I sink any more money into this platform.

Hey I just got my first windows phone- a Lumia 822 and I wanted to ask a couple questions:

-I have the feeling this might be beating a dead horse but is there really, *really* no music player that will let me play my music from folders? That's how all of my poo poo is organized. Right now I get around this by selecting the song using Pocket file manager and playing it from there but doing it this way feels a little clunky.

-Can someone recommend a podcast catcher that will let me subscribe to a podcast using an opml link and also doesn't suck?

-Right now I have Windows 8. I'd rather wait for the official release of 8.1 but will the fact that I'm on Page Plus mean that I might not get the update at the same time as someone who subscribes directly to Verizon?

I was just looking at it and I suddenly got this urge to get inside. No, not just an urge - more than that. It was my destiny to be here; in the box.
My job supplies me a work phone (iPhone 4S), so I lug it around with my personal 920. My supervisor recently questioned why I don't just port my personal number over to CSpire and let the company pay for it and just have my personal phone be my work phone.

It's a tempting deal, saving me about ~$90 a month, but CSpire notoriously hates Windows Phone, and also won't entertain the idea of activating an unlocked phone.

Now I've got the choice of having a free iPhone/Android, or paying out of pocket to keep my Windows Phone.

I'm torn, ya'll.

I bought one of the Lumia 635's on Black Friday because I've been super curious about the Windows Phone OS and such for a -long- time now. I currently have an iPhone 5S. After dicking around with it for the past two days...

...Why isn't Windows Phone more popular? The OS is fun, streamlined, and flashy. I can customize my home screen pretty well. Live tiles are really cool. Hell, even on a $40 phone the OS is really responsive. Cortana is a dream.

Where's the breakdown? I'm seriously considering dumping my iPhone on my next re-up because WP's are much more affordable and seem to be feature rich. I understand there's some poo poo app support, but I can work around that comfortably. I just feel even on a lower end phone for someone that doesn't use their phone for games that the 635 feels really not a lot different than an iPhone.

Of course, my real problem is apparently Verizon having poo poo support for WP and AT&T/Sprint/T-Mobile are garbage where I live.

This is an anecdote from like 8-12 months ago when my wife used a Lumia 521 for around a month after she broke her Galaxy S4 and before she replaced the Lumia with a Nexus 5...

She thought it felt really slow in general, but especially loading webpages. Some webpages that worked fine on Chrome on Android didn't work on IE on the Lumia (I think things like navigation bars with drop downs and editing in blogger or something like that, not sure). Camera was really bad (obviously since it's super budget, but that was a deal breaker for her). Display had really poor colors (ditto). She hated live tiles, since they would flip randomly between things; this is compared to widgets, where you set up what you want it to show you and it just shows it to you. This was before Windows 8.1, so toast notifications rather than a notification center killed her. She didn't like not having a swipe keyboard (fixed now, I know). I think this may have been before you could upload videos to Instagram? In any case, she only really used Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and a few other (major) apps, and she was frustrated by more of them than not. I think she tried to find some specific photo editing apps, retail store apps, that kind of thing, and just didn't find what she wanted. I'm sure she could have found replacements for some of them, but that takes work to tell apart the garbage knockoff apps from the decent knockoff apps. In general, she's not super tied into Google, but she does use Chrome, Gmail, Hangouts, and Blogger, and they all naturally work best on Android. A lot of these annoyances are problems with a budget Windows Phone, not the OS in general, but the nice cheap Windows Phones are the only really compelling ones.

I keep wanting to get a cheap 530/635 to have as a backup phone, and she keeps saying if her current phone breaks, she'd rather go phone-less for a couple days than use one of them, haha. So that, plus the fact that I can quickly get a Moto E or Moto G if one of our phones breaks, means no need for a cheap Windows Phone for us.

I have the 8XT on SERO and every time it crashes for WiFi poo poo I am tempted to cancel and go to Cricket or something. It largely boils down to 'Microsoft sucks at marketing' although they do alot better in Europe and developing markets. Also apparently the music player sucks.

Windows phone seems to do worse in the US than any other country, and I suspect it has a lot to do with different phone companies insisting on having exclusives of certain models.

Here in Australia all the phone companies are selling them, and they seem to be putting some effort into marketing.

The Supermarket I work in has just brought in the Lumia 530, and put it on sale for 34 dollars outright (normally sells for 90 - 120). Considering the next best phone is spending 200 on an Android phone with a 3.2" screen and android 2.2, you can see the appeal - Since I'm the only windows phone user in the store, I gathered all the other supervisors up and explained how good the phone is, and how it would still be the best phone someone could buy from us even if it cost 200.

Now everyone pushes it, we can hardly keep them in stock, and I've personally sold about 20 of them in the past week.
