Slime Bro Helpdesk posted:

How does 2/DH handle CAGs for CVEs/CVLs/CVs? In 3 it was 1 CAG for CVLs, 2 for CVs...

Unlike in 1 and 3, the air wings of carriers in HOI 2/DH are abstracted into what are really just very long range guns. The only difference are the stats of the various carrier-specific CAGs - CVs obviously have more powerful ones.

In HOI 2 specifically, CVLs don't even have CAGs as separate attached brigades - the stats are baked right into the base ship, which has the disadvantage of making the outdated CVLs really outdated.

At least with HOI 2's CVs, the CAG will upgrade as tech levels increase, so the attack value of the CAG can improve even on an early 1940s carrier, sort of to reflect how the US Navy's CVs would start the war flying Buffaloes and Devastators, transition into Wildcats and Dauntlesses, end the war with Hellcats and Avengers, and even see some Korean War-era models flying off their decks. At the same time though, the USS Enterprise is still an early 1940s hull, so it's not as fast, not as damage resistant, not as long-ranged (in terms of sailing distance) as an Essex.

With DH though IIRC all CAGs are brigades, allowing CVEs/CVLs to have the same upgrade paradigm.

For the next 48 hours, there's a Paradox Flash Bundle on humblebundle.

$1 Tier:
-War of the Roses: Kingmaker (2 copies)
-March of the Eagles
-:siren: Darkest Hour :siren:
-Sword of the Stars II: Enhanced Edition

Above-Average Tier:
-Cities in Motion 2
-Warlock: Master of the Arcane

$16+ Tier:
-Crusader Kings 2 + Russian/Norse Unit Packs

Darkest Hour itself is well, well worth it, and MotE puts a little bit of icing on the cake.

Edit: also, Victoria II is apparently 3.99 for the next 24 hours on the Humble Store, but it's vanilla (no expansions).

Is there a good breakdown of differences between Arsenal of Democracy and Darkest Hour? I've played AoD a little bit but for $1 I sure can't argue. Also, recommendations on good nations to play while learning the game?

Basically Darkest Hour is better and prettier. Play as the Germans first.

I was playing a Japan game in EU4 and western trade just reached me, and apparently there's currently a bug that makes Sakoku law not work which means you can't stop it. Just how bad do the events get? Is this something you can play through or do I just wait for a patch?

Has anyone figured out a way to make Darkest Hour playable online with friends? Hamachi is always a hit or miss and it is depressing to put 5 hours into a game with a friend and being unable to pick it up again because it de-syncs every 10 minutes.

It still makes me a little mad whenever I see a new Kerberos release based on the SotS IP. Not out of any love for the IP or thinking they're ruining it or anything, just gently caress those guys I wish the SotS2 thing would have drove them out of business.

I have a question: CK2 alone is on sale for $10, but a bundle with a poo poo ton of expansions is on sale for $40.

As someone who's been lurking in the CK2 threads for a while but has never played the game before, should I just go for the vanilla deal? Or do the expansions significantly improve the game?

The expansions always significantly improve the game, but almost always you can get most of the core gameplay features of each expansion for free without purchasing the expansion. It's the extra stuff that you need the expansion for (for example, India still exists even if you don't have Rajas of India, but you can't start the game there without the expansion).

In CK2 the expansion DLCs, besides Legacy of Rome, expand your options in terms of where and when you can play. With just the vanilla game you can only play as a feudal Christian from 1066 on. The best value for money expansion is definitely The Old Gods because it unlocks both the 867 bookmark and pagans, who control huge swathes of the map in 867. After that it's sort of up to you but none of the expansion DLC are bad and you'll need many of them to get the most out of mods as well, since a lot of religion-specific stuff is reused with a different flavor even in mods like Game of Thrones, After the End, Elder Kings, etc. and so being able to play as, say, a Rust Cultist in After the End is dependent upon you having Old Gods because they are "pagan".

The bundle is a really good price if you think you would buy all of the cosmetic stuff that is in it, or even some of it - it's $8 less than all of those DLC put together so you are effectively getting $8 of cosmetic DLC for free. A few of the portrait packs are basically essential (Mongol, African) but the rest of the cosmetic DLC is just kind of neat. Otherwise you can get just the actual gameplay DLCs for less since they are all 75% off individually too. You don't need to rush though, CK2 and its DLC goes on sale on Steam at 75% off all the time, so you can get some of the DLC now and some later.

I'd say that even as a new player there are a couple DLCs worth getting, but you definitely don't need ALL of them right off the bat since a good half of them focus on a specific area of the game that you probably won't even play right away.

Ones I'd recommend getting for a new player (in order of priority):
-The Old Gods - everyone can use the new start date so even if you don't play a Pagan you still get a bunch of stuff out of it. And pagans are one of the more interesting things to play and fairly newbie friendly, so it's not actually a terrible idea to give the Vikings a go for your first try.
-Legacy of Rome - once again, comes with something everyone can use (retinues). They aren't as good as they used to be but still add a fairly interesting aspect to the game. It also adds a ton of specific content to the Byzantine Empire, which is another fairly decent newbie option if you want to start big rather than work your way up. If retinues weren't nerfed recently, this would be above TOG.
-Sons of Abraham - since you're probably going to play a catholic to start, you'll get a lot out of this one as it adds a whole bunch of catholic-specific stuff like the college of cardinals and papal favours. It also adds a few other bits to non-catholic rulers like randomly getting Jewish courtiers or just letting you play as one of the very few Jewish rulers in game (They are NOT newbie friendly, though. All of them start surrounded by enemies and generally won't survive unless you know what you're doing).
-Charlemange - another new start date, even farther back than the old gods. It's got a bunch of other stuff but as a new player that's probably all you'll really care about initially. You can probably skip it for now.

Ones that are focused on specific regions:
-Sword of Islam - lets you play Muslims.
-Rajas of India - lets you play in India.
-The Republic - lets you play as a merchant republic.

All three of those will still be a part of the game without the expansion, you just won't be allowed to play as them. Of the three, The Republic is probably the most interesting since Merchant Republics have a bunch of unique mechanics compared to anyone else in the game.

Wait, how did retinues get nerfed? I haven't played CK2 in a few months.

Zeron
Oct 23, 2010
Basically a combination of a constant maintenance cost so that they cost money even when not reinforcing, halving the size of each retinue so that each retinue point provides half the retinues now, halving the maximum reinforcement speed of a retinue so that they take twice as long to reinforce to max which means eating the reinforcement cost for twice as long and having your retinue not be in good shape for twice as long, and some nerfs to cultural tactics. Using all knight or cataphract retinues is far too expensive for pretty much anyone anymore, and the only way to get reasonably priced large retinues is to go for archer or light infantry retinues.
