When it comes to actual value added to the country in general, someone at the DMV has helped more Americans than someone shooting a HIMARS in Afghanistan. And as far as riskiness goes, there are plenty of things far more dangerous than sitting on a base in Afghanistan that people don't get nearly as much credit for. My cynical take is that the troop worship makes it easier for us to send kids off to die: if they are all heroes dying for a noble cause then it takes some of the sting out of what is an otherwise pointless death. Much better dying for freedom than dying because you wanted to go to college without taking on crippling debt. Veterans of any recent wars are certainly not worthy of any kind of elevation, and may even be worthy of contempt because they volunteered to fight in pointless conflicts. But for some reason, even questioning whether or not troops should be worshipped is a taboo in polite American society.

Troops are venerated for political clout mostly. Preach about are heroes and then you're able to use that to manipulate your base. One the whole, though, no one really gives a gently caress about veterans.

Have you seen a HIMARS impact? baw posted:Veterans of any recent wars are certainly not worthy of any kind of elevation, and may even be worthy of contempt because they volunteered to fight in pointless conflicts. We deserve elevation above all over veterans of other wars. Are you loving kidding me? Revolutionary war soldiers had a legit cause to fight. Civil war soldiers were mostly drafted in the north if they were too poor to avoid it. The black soldiers obviously had some buy-in, too. WWII? We saved the loving world. Vietnam? Did you see the memorial they built into the divot left by the giant cross those guys drag around? Sorry buddy. My generation of veterans are the best. We served for a cause so pointless that the administrations had to cut the dicks off a series of generals and pentagon types to keep going with the charade. We had our felonies waived, our ADD waived, our tattoos overlooked; we enlisted for five- and six-figure bonuses and graduate school, and absurdly pumped-up GI bill benefits; we had an entire country throw a shitfit at SecDef Rummy to give us sweet-16 MRAP for cruising down Baghdad drive; never before has a nation sent 18 year old chaplains assistants and air force intel POGs to war with M4s three-point-slung behind their backs with every slot on the picatinny used. And liveblogged the entire thing throughout - every pissed-on Afghan corpse, dog parade in Abu Ghraib, the mountains of female service member pussy getting slain on the daily in Bagram, Jalalabad, Anaconda and whatever other loving Iraq bases there were; we came home to clapping old people and free drinks, parades in our honors while crippled WWII vets saluted our comfy asses. gently caress you, man, this was the stupidest set of wars fought in our lifetime and we did it anyway. We're the greatest. There was no point to any of it, yet we went, complaining the whole way, killing ourselves by the dozens before, during and after; claimed VA benefits after med discharges in basic and AIT. If we aren't god's chosen race, who is? baw posted:But for some reason, even questioning whether or not troops should be worshipped is a taboo in polite American society. What I find to be bullshit is that MMJ states will not include PTSD as a "qualifying condition" for medical marijuana. Yet if these people smoked weed before enlisting, they would have failed their drug tests, got kicked out of the service and never got PTSD to begin with.

OEF/OIF were not pointless wars, they were much-needed practice for the big jump on Moscow/Beijing. Think about it, the only soldiers with combat experience in North Korea are geriatrics who are strung along in service only because they have vague foggy memories of fighting the white devil and may remember where the weak points in a Pershing tank's armor is.

Son, we live in a world that has WalMarts. You don't want to shop at WalMart? You have that luxury. You have the luxury of shopping locally, ingoring that the subjugation of entire civilizations makes that possible. Ignoring that dunking on backwards nations, while tragic, probably saved money. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves money. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me out there slashing prices. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps on a Scrooge McDuck-sized pile of 1st world conveniences that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a drat what you think we are entitled to. The result is a raw, intense, mysterious, brutal and at times maybe a shocking and controversial book. It is as highly personal as it is honest in its quest for an alternative view of our world. Sounds like pretentious beautiful high quality images of poo poo we sometimes post here already.
