99.9% of San Francisco is South of Ghiradelli.

Yeah, I actually grew up in San Francisco. I should've been way more clear: I'm strongly leaning towards the G h appearing in sight of the exact dig location, like in that one goon picture. Like you said, reversing it to say "dig south of Ghirardelli" eliminates nothing.

Wasnt the map of illinois or ohio reversed? What was the ultimate point of that? I still feel like this is different than that: Reversing a map makes it a little harder to recognize. Reversing a letter does nothing to increase the challenge. It has to mean something.

I'm in favor of the <hG> being intended as a link to Ghirardelli. It sure helps connect the verse to the image. Most folks assume it's reversed because that's the way it's presented when seen from the Russian Park area.

I think there's a some subtle Fair Folk business going on with the reversal as a conveyance about a mirror's effect or reflection. This being the dragon of far Cathay, I think there's some significance in astrology. I'm not into astrology, but consulting Wikipedia I see there's a three connections between dragons and planets: Azure dragon with Jupiter, Yellow dragon with Saturn, and either a bird or some other kind of dragon with Mars. I've wondered if the <hG> is a hint for "Hg", the symbol for chemical element Mercury. Mercury represents the element Water in Chinese Astrology and is linked to the quality of Wisdom. I like that the Mercury connection might follow a common idea that a pearl is associated with wisdom.

If Preiss wanted to role-play each Fair Folk's connection to a particular jewel, then he might let some lore shape his approach to each particular landscape, landmark, or historic site. Alcatraz, a prison, is the antithesis of Wisdom, since people might avoid incarceration for having the wisdom to avoid doing the wrong thing or thinking before they commit acts of injustice. I think Ghiradelli as a "sweet" representative might be thought of as a "temptation" and it's nearness to Alcatraz works to some extent to put us on some kind of trail in San Francisco. Whether that area is the end or the beginning, I think the trail is long and windy like the Oriental dragon. I suppose the idea of attributing something in San Francisco as being like the length of a dragon might bring us around to the Great Highway or the Golden Gate Bridge. If so, the question is where should the pearl be located? In the dragon's jaws? Near the beginning or end of the Great Highway or right as you get off either end of the Golden Gate?

I'm pretty sure Gh is Ghirardelli, because if it were Great highway, that would be a pretty slick move by preiss to confuse solvers. And if there's one thing we know, it's that Preiss wasn't that good at making puzzles.

It's a good bet that something in the verse or image, maybe both, hints at a named road. Most people feeling confident they've figured out one of the correct cities are trying to identify what could be the road hint. Is there a need for multiple road hints, or should we expect just one or two at most? Remember, there's not a lot of lines of verse to be wasted on some lengthy approach to the treasure ground.

For image 1, I like <hG> as a road hint. I really like the fingers pointing to the boxes on the sleeves as an indication of a 4 and 3, being either 43 or 34. The only lines I might guess as being road hints in verse 7 are "Sounds from the sky" or "near ace is high".

I wonder if there's a riddle for Howard Hughes here. Sounds from the sky = planes. Near ace is high = King. Could Howard Hughes be considered a "King of planes"?

Street names: Howard Court or North/South Hughes Lane in the Golden Gate National Recreation area might be worth considering.

Milwaukee seems to have a few, right? Didn't Chicago have one or two? i'm not sure Cleveland has any at all.

Right now I'm obsessed with finding stuff in the verse that relates to stuff in its corresponding painting, as opposed to stuff in the verse that tells us where to go in a city. I figure that process of elimination might help with verses with parts that just make no sense as we know it.

Alternately, "near ace is high" could be the joker. I.e. Preiss is the joker, and he was high when he wrote this verse. This is corroborated with "The Joker" by Steve Miller Band, where the chorus goes "I'm a joker, I'm a toker."

I am having a little fun, so have a laugh. More so, I'm just exploring some ideas within the little context we have. Imagine the author had the sense to create a story for how each of the Fair Folk hid their jewel. The Greek Nymphs hid theirs in a Grecian Garden. The Celtic folk hid theirs in a field of trees, between a fence and fixture with allusions to electricity (power generation of a windmill, lightning rods on the giants hat, an electric rail train, light fixtures, "conductors" may drive a train, or "conductors" may direct the music of Mozart or Beethoven, etc.). I wonder...CELTIC compared to ELECTRIC do share all the same letters.

Speculating on SF, I figure the dragon may be perceived as a giant flying beast, so why wouldn't Howard Hughes be a possibility?

The basic juggling pattern she uses in image 10 is called "windmill" or "side circles". Perhaps this observation has been made before, since -mill makes a good reference to Mil- for Milwaukee, but how about wind- ? Maybe this is also a strong hint for a place or road name that uses the word 'wind'. How about Windlake Ave. which runs through the historic Mitchell Street area?

I wish them images in your posts weren't broken so I could go back and look at the one where you took a streetview picture of a twisted tree trunk on the side of a road that vaguely looked like a picture from one specific angle. Problem being it was a tiny tree that likely wasn't even 15 years old.

wa27, you must be talking about the tree near the Palace of the Legion if Honor. Nobody came forward to collect a hundred bucks for estimating the number of rings on a small stump next to that tree. (That deal expired, but maybe I can work something out with someone who might make a real effort to estimate those rings).

I loaned my kid a chainsaw and some camping equipment on her road trip through SF but she didn't manage to get a cutting for me to test my theory. Lets be real here and stop assuming a tree is 15-30 years old when we really have no idea. The only verifiable info I've found about those cypress trees is that they were initially planted in the mid 1930's. There's a chance that the limbs I believe might be an image match were well established long before 1982.

I'm still primarily focused on the idea that a bench was used to visually line up with the Golden Gate Bridge in the distance. I would consider that as a good way to narrow down the exact spot to put a shovel. Maybe those branches are part of that plan, but that was over 30 years ago. It could be those branches are too young to be considered. Maybe those benches are newer and if there were benches there 30 years ago, the might not have been the same shape. Lots of unknowns, so I'm at the limit of my urbansmurfing until I get down there myself or someone helps out.
