The Socialist Workers Party's newspaper proved to be a tough sell to downtown businessmen.
All happy families are alike; all unhappy families are unhappy in their own way.

I was an only child so I don't know what it's like to have an irresponsible con artist for a sister, but a lot of the Tony and Carmela as parents scenes hit really close to home for me.

What happened to those two? Are they friends now? Just curious, as all the twins I know have that "twin bond" and stuff.

I lost touch after high school, which was 25 years ago. Last I heard one of them went to jail for something and I looked up the other one on Facebook and he's a "hands off are guns" fallout shelter style libertarian wacko so I've resisted touching the poo. Same goes for most of the guys I grew up with.

Actually murdering Chris was right in-line with the way Tony saw him for the entire series. When Tony says that Chris is "family", what he means is he can use Chris up and toss him away whenever he feels like it. To Tony his family are people that he can dump on without any repercussions, the fact that he protects them from outside threats doesn't change that.

Tony tells Melfi very frankly in one episode that he is "taking steps" to bond Chris to him even more strongly so that he can fully depend on him. He wants a dependable right hand man for the business, nothing more nothing less. Oh wait, except for that time he goaded Chris into ruining his sobriety just because he wanted a drinking buddy for the night. I guess he didn't care how dependable Chris was that night.

What I'm saying is that Tony wants people to be what he needs them to be from moment to moment, and if what he needs you to be is dead, he has no problem with it.

Edit: I think what makes the Tony Soprano character so compelling is he seems to realize that he is a hosed up person, and we get to watch him struggle to understand himself and change. He never succeeds, but few people do.

I see Tony Soprano as coming into therapy with an existential crisis, and coming out the other end happy and accepting of who he is and what he does. His fainting sessions don't happen anymore and he is able to deal more effectively with problems.

This is definitely true at least to some extent. That's exactly what Melfi ends up struggling with. She starts the therapy session thinking that she is going to help Tony figure out how to be a better person, but all she ends up doing is helping him rationalize his behavior so that he doesn't have panic attacks anymore. Once she realizes that(or has it pointed out to her by her own therapist) she starts trying to extricate herself and drop Tony as a client but we all know how that went.

One of the most revealing scenes about how Tony has been using therapy is when he's convinced that Christopher wants him dead after seeing Cleaver. Melfi asks him something like "Without invalidating your feelings, is it possible you're reading into this too much?" and he responds "I've been coming here for years, I know too much about the subconscious now"

Better, possibly, but the Soprano crew was always inefficient as poo poo because Tony would lose his temper and kill someone he shouldn't or start some poo poo with New York. The only major earning loss he suffered that wasn't either directly or indirectly his fault was after Vito died and he lost his best earner.

Yeah this show has an incredibly strong finale season (and episode - it's always surprising how much they manage to cram in there and resolve). Can't really think of any that come close to topping it.

Poorly? Since he had to be told by Carmela what the movie meant.

That's what makes it even worse. He needed to talk to Carmela, Silvio and JT in order to realize that it was basically a revenge fantasy. Then he takes it a step further and convinces himself that it means Christopher is planning to have him killed and he uses his limited understanding of psychiatry to justify it.

Nobody's hard enough (except Paulie). He's a fantastic character, but I'm glad they're not trying to do another show with him. It'd be like Seinfeld trying to do a spin-off of "The Kramer Show". Wouldn't work at all.
