Shokugeki isn't Souma's last name, that's the name of the gourmet battles they engage in.

Since it's come up, Shokugeki is 食戟, with shoku meaning food or eat, and geki's kanji having a double meaning of being halberd or weapon arms but more commonly used as part of words for stimulation/inspiration/motivation/provacation. The Food Arms of Souma is the literal translation I guess, but considering it's an actual term for in the series, it's somewhat understandable to go with Food Wars, or Food Duels. Not actually sure if Viz localizes shokugeki as anything though(I don't think any of the latest issues have referred to shokugekis, and I haven't bought the first few volumes so I wouldn't know).

If it makes you feel better, the full official Viz title is "Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma", it's just that the logo emphasizes the English part.

I've said before that "Food Wars" sounds like what Toriko is. I still stand by this.

ZepiaEltnamOberon posted:

First name/last name has nothing to do with it. Soma's name is Yukihira Soma. Shokugeki is the name that they gave those formalized cooking duels. "No" in the context of "Shokugeki no Soma" is a possessive. If we were going for a literal translation, it would be "Soma's Cooking Duel(s)", or something like that.

EDIT: Whaddya know, five years of high school and jr. high French just came in handy for reading the french scan off Batoto. Yay, more Dojima.

ACTUALLY IT IS VERY GOOD THAT THE SHOW IS BAD AND ANYONE WHO DOESN'T REALIZE WHY THAT'S GOOD IS AN IDIOT. JUST ENJOY THE BAD SHOW INSTEAD OF THINKING.
Kurokiba: "I am an expert with seafood and know everything about it and you could never beat me in a seafood competition. I don't know what that piece of seafood you have is."
Hayama: "I have an expert nose and can identify everything by smell alone. I don't know that thing you have is. Congratulations on third place, loser who can't cook."

Death flags everywhere.

There would have to be some kind of serious change in attitude for Souma to not just win this outright.

I believe that the actual matches are still called Shokugeki.

Yeah, not really.

Alice and Ryo work better as a duo because they actually cook competitively against each other and thus they grow through that sort of rivalry. It's like what Hayama said when he trash talked Erina's aide, Hisako; she can't improve as a cook since she's fine with putting Erina on a pedestal instead of trying to surpass her.

Alice is great cause she's one of the few major female characters not to go into a massive blushing frenzy at the sight of Soma like Meat Girl or Country Girl or Lady Girl.

Also she's a hilarious sore loser just like her aide.

And she has the best eyes.

I'm pretty forgiving about this, at least with Megumi because they developed her character a lot and since she's spent enough time with Soma who's been nothing but supportive of her skills and improvement, so yeah I can buy her developing feelings.

Erina exists to get heckled by people who don't give a drat about her being top dog of the first years.

Seriously though she's barely done anything in the story besides being Simply The Best There Is. It is part of the problem of having a character so separate from the main cast. I guess part of the narrative purpose of this arc is to put them closer together?

Technically she also knows his dad but is unaware that they're related, but the writer seems content to hold off on that plot point for as long as possible, meaning she's kept even more separate from the main cast.

Clearly what's going to happen is that Souma will win and get a seat among the elites, allowing him to interact with Erina. However, he'll be so busy managing the school that we'll effectively never again see all the characters we've gotten used to.

Isshiki seems to spend most of his time pissing around the dorm so I doubt Souma being in the 10 would change all that much.

Just have Souma's dad show up already and call him son in front of her so she can realize the dude who inspired her and made her happy as a child is the father of the dude she lovehates so the whole tired angle can be put to bed already.

For all that Erina gets lots of focus on color pages and such, the manga is set up so that she very rarely interacts with the main character. Even if she wasn't by far the least interesting female character, Erina simply hasn't been around enough to warrant being called the heroine.
