I'll still watch it because the subject and period is interesting to me and I'll give it a shot but yeah, there's something to be said about business decisions getting in the way of making a show. This sounds like a GOT ripoff to the highest degree, possibly might even be worse than all the Lost-ripoffs we got in the span of 2006-2009 or so, where no one either on the business or creative side seems to understand why the show they're ripping off is good and just copy the wrong parts while skipping the ones that made it good. It's beautifully shot though, apparently, even from the trailers alone.

Sober posted:OITNB, while obviously not Irish Joe's cup of tea, is probably the closest thing Netflix has to being actually 'good' at the moment. I haven't had the chance to watch Bojack Horseman yet. House of Cards though felt way to sterile most of the time and got boring to watch as Kevin Spacey just bulldozed over the competition (for the lack of a better word) like nothing. He had, what, 2 setbacks in all of the first season? That gets boring to watch. Apparently he just goes full supervillain in S2 and the show is not self-aware enough to realize it or something? BoJack Horseman is great, but it's an outlier in terms of style. A friend of mine -- or maybe an article I can't find -- theorized that Netflix is trying the Tomato Sauce strategy of having a whole bunch of shows with unique flavors; something for everyone. BoJack, Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Marco Polo...these shows don't share a lot of stylistic DNA. (The upcoming Bloodlines might find some common ground with House of Cards, but we'll see.) The point is to get and keep subscribers of all kinds, and since Netflix isn't bound to timeslots, their room to play is only limited by their budget.

Well, Netflix is trying to produce all kinds of new content, so they do a prestige drama here, an anime there, a zeitgeist capturing dramedy there, a weird animated show there, a show for people that like Game of Thrones and historical epic fiction. Netflix has the ambition to go after ever conceivable demographic.

They also have nearly perfect metrics on what their subscribers watch and rewatch and therefore will watch.

One issue with this is whenever underwood does experience a setback, it doesn't seem like it. Spacey makes a stern monologue at the camera, and he gives the impression that this is no big deal and everything is still under control.

Mike Tyson Mysteries got renewed! I was kind of worried it wouldn't, because it is such a wonderful cocktail of highbrow and lowbrow weirdness that it could've easily just picked up no viewers.

Your first official cast members for Fargo Season 2 are Jeffrey Donovan, Kirsten Dunst, and Jesse Plemons. Dunst and Plemons' characters are obviously big, but Donovan's role is likely a supporting one. The role of Lou Solverson is still open. Nick Offerman has also been invited to jump aboard (not necessarily as the elder Solverson), but he's apparently still deciding.

While I agree the show's on the sterile side, and the main character is probably too competent and lucky with weak competition in the first two seasons. But the show is self-aware about how horrible of a person the main character is. But that doesn't necessarily mean all viewers will catch on. (See: Breaking Bad.) And as for the character having it too easy, I assume the show is called House of Cards for a reason and everything will start going to hell for him next season. That being said it is sort of a boring show structure to have to wait so long for the protagonist to come into extreme trouble and take a real loss.
