Season 1 is great, though.

I'm watching Psycho-Pass right now and it seems pretty good. It's pretty far from the futurist wank fodder of the few episodes of Ghost in the Shell I saw anyway. It's about society and the nature of laws and the effects of their enforcement, not robots and cyborgs.

Pineapple Army and 20th Century Boys. The plots tend to be a bit more fantastical in nature and less slice of life, but 20CB is like if you took a SoL comic and then mixed in the epic scope and world ending stakes of something like Game of Thrones. I guess its sort of like IT crossed with The Stand or maybe something like Preacher if I had to compare it with western media. For a more standard SoL type deal SKET Dance is also pretty great. Manga is better than the show but the show is pretty fun too and has a great soundtrack. I guess if you've somehow lived your life without reading GTO then I'd get on that as well.

icantfindaname posted:So how good is Madoka? Is there any skeevy poo poo involved? I'm hesitant to watch that kind of magical-girl-for-adult-men stuff, but I understand Madoka is supposed to be very good? Madoka is easily one of the best anime of the decade, and one of the most tightly-constructed works of fiction I've ever seen. It's the kind of show that demonstrates what anime is actually capable of as an art form. It is Very Good. The Rebellion movie is kinda "meh", though.

There are two versions of Madoka. There's the two movies which are glorified recaps featuring upgraded animation, a better sound mix, and a new soundtrack. Some scenes are cut from the TV show, the majority arguably worth cutting. Then a third movie which continues the story. Which has very polarizing opinions. The TV version is slightly longer, by featuring some scenes the recap movies cut. There is nothing skeevy. The TV opening has some barbie doll nudity, there's a scene during the final episode which shows two characters in barbie doll nudity. Show is considered to be very good and worth the watch. Takes a couple episodes to ramp up.

Madoka is very good, I've recommend it to a couple people who aren't particularly interested in anime but love a good story and they both enjoyed it a lot. In my opinion, just watch the series; it's even legally streaming in a number of places.

I just randomly watched an episode of the Mazinkaiser OVA, which I enjoyed. Is there a reason I should first/instead see another one of the Mazinger series? Is the movie on Netflix, Mazinkaiser SKL, worth watching?

Mazinkaiser is pretty cool, if you like that also watch Shin Mazinger Z Hen, which is one of the best super robot shows ever made. SKL is good for super robot fighting porn but everything else is kind of eh. As to whether you should watch one thing or another first, pretty much only the first two series from the 60's were designed to be watched in chronological order, Mazinkaizer technically takes place after those but barely requires any knowledge of to enjoy, Shin Mazinger is a re-imagining of the first tv series/manga and SKL is its own thing. It's been long overdue, but I watched the first two episodes of Kyousougiga today. Is the first supposed to not make any goddamn sense? I pushed on to the second, since it was pretty well liked, and that felt like an actual introduction to the story. I'll probably continue, but if the remainder are as utterly confusing as the first, I'm easily going to drop it.

If you're talking about episode 0, bear in mind it was originally a stand-alone OVA, and more OVAs wouldn't come until several months later to sort of fill in the details. Episode 0 is basically a recut/airing of that original OVA just to grab your attention. The actual series itself is more laid-back and not quite as spontaneous in throwing you into everything at once, and there's some little bits in there that get contradicted later on when the series gets around to the events of episode 0.

Pretty dumb. I vaguely remember the first couple of arcs being entertaining but it eventually became too silly and trashy. I don't think I even bothered to finish it.

Really good. It's full of exploitative, campy stuff but at its core it's surprisingly sweet. It was directed by Naoto Hosoda who also did ADTRW Anime of the Year 2013 The Devil Is A Part-Timer and he does a great job at both the funny stuff and the tense stuff. There's a bunch of scenes where the male and female leads basically react rom-com story beats but with extra-murder, and it works far better than it should. The diaries are very silly super powers and at their best it makes the action scenes feel like good Jojo fights. Oh, and there's after credit extras worth staying around for. It's not the kind of thing that will click with everyone (and I'm always embarrassed when I recommend it) but I think it's worth giving a chance. devtesla fucked around with this message at 22:09 on Dec 15, 2014 |

Fat_Cow posted:How is Mirai Nikki? It's my favorite "bad" show. The comedy beats are really well-executed and the plot hangs together better than people give it credit for (although that's not a very high bar.) It's incredibly trashy though so don't expect any different. Also, they kind of flubbed the ending -- the TV run concludes with the fake-out ending in the second-to-last chapter of the manga, and then the OVA adds a bunch of weird filler to the actual end that doesn't really change anything. I suggest just picking up the final chapter after the series ends, it's not long.
