How is Lilyhammer, anyways, people who've seen it? Obviously I'm not expecting Sopranos-good but I'd definitely give it a watch if I felt like I'd like it. Would've tried already but too few hours in the day and all.

I've not seen the third season yet but I heard it was dogshit

I could understand that things were supposed to be funny and I'm sure someone from Norway would be laughing, but a lot of it fell flat for me. Sad Elvis-impersonator local Norway cop who looks kind of like Steve Buscemi was the best part.

While it's called a "Netflix Original" it's actually one of those shows like The Killing that they picked up elsewhere to assert themselves as a provider of original content. It's made in Norway, where it originally aired, and Netflix grabbed it afterwards, probably because of the Sopranos connection than anything else. Don't expect the same quality as from shows they actually were involved in from the start like Orange is the New Black or House of Cards.

House of Cards is good binge TV, but it's not exactly at Great Drama level. The cast largely kills it, though.

The second season, it was more or less "Eh, we're not going to win, don't bother trying"

Speaking of early HBO, I was at a friend's house last night and at the moment all he's unpacked entertainment-wise was his VHS collection, so we were watching the old HBO Gotti movie. I recommend it for any Sopranos fans because half the drat cast is in it, and it's a really well done movie. Armand Assante kills it as Gotti, Tony Sirico shows up as his brother, and its just overall a fantastic cast.

Word to the wise: remember Pearl Harbor loving Paulie haha watching this for the first time, this episode is so sad I'm sure Tony arranged for Buscemi to get that money to lure him back into the mob, this is so tragic.

I watched the first season of Lilyhammer and I didn't think it was bad. It was mostly silly but enjoyable. It kinda makes me think of what Sopranos could have been if they followed the same tone in that first season episode where they look around for AJ's teacher's car. I'll probably watch more of it. I can't say the same about House of Cards or Boardwalk Empire...

Lilyhammer Isn't that bad and is great during this time of year when most shows are on a break. It isn't insightful like The Sopranos, just enjoy what you're watching. I still think its much, much better than network TV.

Yeah that's what I've always figured as well. Also I thought Tony did that so his cousin wouldn't go back to crime (to give him a little extra bit of cash.)

Given how the Sopranos continues to be so popular, does anyone else show an interest in a Let's Watch of the first season? I've seen similar things in the past in TVIV for some shows, and ADTRW has done quite a few threads where they schedule and watch a notable anime series from a few years back and discuss it. Personally for me, following a thread where people watch 2-3 Sopranos episodes a week (with no spoilers) and hopefully drawing into new viewers would be really engaging. Usually the ADTRW threads create a schedule for the run of the show so people can jump into the thread to share their opinions experience or livewatch, especially new viewers, so I imagine that something similar would be easy enough to do. It doesn't take much, and even 3-4 regulars posting in the thread to share episode observations/opinions (SANS FUTURE SPOILERS) would do wonders for bring in unaware fans I say this mostly because I can't really make creative or engaging OPs for shows, and someone willing to put in the effort to create one that can act as a intro for new viewers would really help. Every show thread in TVIV I've ever started consisted mostly of "This show is nuts, check out these images, seeya!"

I would love to do a rewatch, I started to do it a few months ago but kept interrupting it with other new shows because I had a place to actively discuss the new ones and most sopranos discussion is obviously dead

I haven't seen any mods posting in this thread so that's an uphill struggle.

I'd probably participate in a thread like that. Sopranos is one of my favorite shows everywhere and I think it lends itself to discussion from all kinds of perspectives. The holiday season might not be the best time for starting it, though, because everyone's schedules get hosed sideways and it takes some time to watch an episode, process what you've seen, and write commentary.

Here's my attempt at an OP quote:The Sopranos is one of the greatest television shows ever aired, no argument. For 7 years since the ending people have continued to discuss the show and its meanings, analyzed the characters behaviors and actions, and weighed in on what the show was trying to say. I can toss in images and stuff, but for a season one OP there isn't much to say other introducing the characters and nothing else.

And the show has a lot of moments where poo poo happens just cause that's how life goes sometimes (Christopher blocking the assassins' car, that random witness to the Bevilacqua hit). Meanwhile, any intentional strategy meant to be interpreted by some character as one of those "poo poo happens" moments has always placed the audience behind the scenes of the planning process (Artie's restraunt fire, Feech and the TV sets). Honestly never even crossed my mind that Tony could have anything to do with the bag of cash. And it seems out there enough it'd probably take something like David Chase claiming otherwise for me to give it much credence.

I feel like the idea for Sylvio initially(probably due to Van Zandt being new to acting) was for him to be the stereotypical man of few words who you never want to gently caress with. All of the characters ended up being way more fleshed out than maybe would have been expected just from watching the first season. In the first season Tony is given the most dimensions to his character, the others are still somewhat in stereotype territory.

Sil was smart enough to know what he was good at (juicing girls at the Bing) and stick with it - he repeatedly turns down "promotions" from Tony because he knew he wouldn't really benefit from a high-profile gig like running a crew. Furthering the point, (IIRC) he eventually gives in to Tony in the last season and gets shot almost immediately.

I always think of that episode where he is discussing how he paid for Tracee's dental work, and gloating that he "gets" the other girls by paying for their breast implants which was something Tracee didn't need, but he "got" her through the dental work. It's just so callous and open about the fact he considers them property and enjoys trapping them in a position of servitude to him. It really stands out at reminding you yet again that for all the jovial antics, laughter and good-natured ribbing - these guys are monsters.
