Dead Man's Hand in 5th let him ignore armor and add an extra d6 to armor pen.

Also he used to have special ammunition like Sternguard.

Edit: his warlord trait gives him Rampage. He'll be good at...killing ork boys, I guess?

He used to have a rule that allowed him to ignore all armor saves in CC and get +D6 to pen to represent "The Dead Man's Hand". I guess he just lost that hand somewhere. He is 30-45 points cheaper though.

Third Game - Dawn of War Deployment
Our final opponents were a Grey Knight SM and an Iron Hands SM player bringing the flyer madness. The Grey Knight player was packing a Librarian, Techmarine, and 5-man Strike Squad... then a Grey Knight Thunderhawk with Laser Destructor. To complement and escort that Grey Knight strike force were Three Stormravens, two with Techmarines and twin Servitors, a Stormtalon, and two 5-man Scout squads. They also had an AEGIS line with Comms Relay.

The scenario was kill points with 8 minefield markers (4" from each marker is dangerous terrain) placed outside of the deployment zones. The way we set up terrain was essentially to place 8 medium to large buildings lining our deployment zones, basically creating a 24" wide "killing zone" of open field. The Warlord trait my partner rolled up was a -1 to their reserves (awesome) and I rolled up Master of Ambush which let me infiltrate three non-vehicle units and my Warlord, also awesome. They rolled a -1 to ours and Night Fight - it would be night fight turn 1.

Deployment
We set up on the southern board edge while they set up on the northern. To the northwest sat a large LoS blocking building which they placed their Aegis in and around and would eventually infiltrate both scout squads around. We put three Wave Serpents behind buildings to the center-right and right of our deployment zone, my partner's two Wraithknights and another Wave Serpent to the center-left. I then chose to Infiltrate my Dire Avengers (which also brought their dedicated Wave Serpent), my Wraithknight, and my Warp Spiders with Autarch and infiltrated them in the center of their deployment zone.

Game
I honestly didn't want to infiltrate all three Wave Serpents, mostly because our opponents were friends and we wanted a good game. So I went with the one, and it opened up on the Scout squads by the comms relay which went to ground, the only units with LoS were the infiltrators which combined to remove all but 4 of the scouts. The rest of our units shifted around slightly to maintain their holo-fields and keep cover from the buildings along our deployment zones. The Wraithknights moved to take advantage of the cover as well. On their turn, they brought in a first-strike deep-strike Libby which scattered outside the building line of their deployment zone and narrowly missed the minefield. The Strike Squad landed near the comms relay. Nothing of note happened except a Warp Spider got plunked from bolter fire.

On our turn we shifted Wave Serpents around then moved the Wraithknights into the killing field. The Crimson Hunters did not come in, one using the Autarch to keep it out. The infiltrating Knight, Serpent, and Spiders/Autarch again attempted to clear the comms relay. The Scouts fell to the Serpent's shield. The Wraithknight claimed the Libby with an instagib shot. The Warp Spiders and Autarch needed to clear two members of the Strike Squad in order to disrupt the Comms Relay but going to ground behind the Aegis meant that I could only drop one.

On their turn the three Stormravens and Stormtalon all came screaming in at a maximum clip, positioning themselves right in front of the Wave Serpents on the center-right and center of our deployment zone. The Thunderhawk rolled to come in and... a 1. Comms relay re-roll though, so it went ahead and... failed to come in on another 1! So without the T-hawk, its escorts go to work and unload everything they have including snapshooting missiles. The end result is 4 HP removed from our three Wave Serpents on the center-right and right but no losses! Awesome. The remaining Strike Squad plunked anotehr Warp Spider.

On our turn only one of the Crimson Hunters made it onto the board, flying onto the far eastern board edge and positioning to shoot down the line of Stormravens and Stormtalon. The Wave Serpents focused on the Stormraven carrying the Warmaster Techmarine. Two combined to bring it down in a flaming wreck, killing the Warmaster and one of his two servitor companions with the other landing square in the minefield. The remaining Wave Serpents combined to bring down the Stormtalon, and removing an HP to the other Techmarine toting Stormraven. The Crimson Hunter, trying to finish the wounded flyer, only managed a single HP due to it's jinking. The Warp Spiders dropped a second Strike Squad member, though too little too late as they'd consolidated their position around the relay.

The Thunderhawk rolled to come in, but once again rolled a 1. Bated breath, the roll came, and this time a 6. The monstrosity lumbered through the skies onto the board and cast it's enormous shadow across no-man's land. The surviving Servitor attempted to flee the minefield for cover but stepped on, seemingly, the very first mine he encountered and abruptly exploded. The damaged and jinking Stormraven managed to repair one of its lost HP and dropped into hover mode, it's Techmarine and Servitor cargo hopping out while the other pursued the Crimson Hunter. Then the T-Hawk opened up. The Laser Destructor immediately wrecked out center-most Wave Serpent while the starboard Psycannons made an utter mess of the Warp Spiders and Autarch, completely wiping them from the board with the help of some lucky bolter shots from the Strike Squad. The starboard lascannon and missiles attempted to down the left most Wave Serpent but managed only a single HP, however, the port Lascannon and Missiles succeeded in finishing off a second Wave Serpent on the right while the port Psycannons forced the Crimson Hunter to jink before it was brought down by the remaining Stormraven. The Techmarine and Servitors assaulted the remaining Wave Serpent on the right flank and brought it down in combat. The combined Guardians, Farseer, and two squads of Dire Avengers which now found themselves hoofing it in the open against a sky full of flyers all got out unharmed.

The Second Crimson Hunter came on and maneuvered at full speed to the Thunderhawk's rear arc. The Wave Serpent which had infiltrated into the enemy deployment zone moved to also put itself directly behind the overhead flyer. The Wraithknights again tried to remove the Strike Squad but one still survived following taking cover behind the Aegis. The combined Dire Avengers made short work of the grounded Techmarine and Servitors. The Wave Serpent to center-left moved flat-out in order to position itself beneath the behemoth flyer. The Farseer chucked a spear at one Stormraven but failed to damage. That only left the Hunter and the Wave Serpent. They put everything into the rear arc and managed to remove 5 HP. No explosions unfortunately.

On their turn they immediately recovered 1 HP from the T-Hawk due to the Techmarine onboard. Both Stormravens again took to the air and while the T-Hawk turned east. One Stormraven stripped an HP from the Hunter and forced it to jink. If it survived I'd fly the Hunter off on the next turn and bring it on turn 6 to hopefully down the T-Hawk. Instead the T-Hawk brought it down with Psycannon fire. The remaining fire managed to damage but not wreck the remaining Wave Serpents, however, they did wipe one of the Dire Avengers squads.

The Wave Serpents again positioned to place shots into the rear arc of the Thunderhawk which was now zooming eastward. The Wraithknights moved to kill the remaining Strike Squad member or take potshots at flyers. They did kill the GK, but failed to hit a flyer. The Wave Serpents on the other hand put 4 more HP on the T-Hawk and left it crippled with one remaining HP.

The Thunderhawk was in a rough spot, due to the arcs it wasn't in a great position to wreck the remaining Wave Serpents and with only a single HP it instead chose to fly off the board and enter ongoing reserves. The two Stormtalons went into hover in order to get position. However, they again failed to bring down one of the two remaining Wave Serpents, though they did remove a second Dire Avenger squad.

Result
On the final turn, the Wraithknights brought down one of the hovering Stormravens while the Wave Serpents brought down the other. The T-Hawk came back on and wrecked my last Wave Serpent, but my partner's remained unscathed. With that the game was over. As it ended we held 13 Kill Points to their 9 and took the Primary. We took 3 of the 4 Secondary points, and failed to take the tertiary.

We ended up taking a total of 43/45 battle points and first place. A good day :)

I mean I really can't talk because I also have a large fire magnet in the Marauder Bomber, but it's only (!) 400 points and fairly usable in that configuration. The Marauder Destroyer would almost always make it's points back because of it's sick-as loadout.

750 points for AV12 12 10, comes stock with a battle-cannon which can become a Str D laser destroyer, alongside a bunch of heavy bolters, two lascannons and the GK one comes with six hellstrikes. 9 HP is fairly standard for a "heavy" flyer, I've only had to fight one once (pre 6th Edition) so I'm not really sure now since flyers are more prominent. I suspect that they fold like a paper bag if the enemy takes any number of AA or fighters.

e: The GK Thunderhawk can switch the Heavy Bolters for Psycannons, which is actually extremely good, if short ranged.

That's kinda par for the course with big units; the bigger and more expensive they are the more someone wants to break it. Its one of its strengths and weaknesses, truth be told.

Also the intensity of :smug: one is allowed when plonking it down on the table, and the amount your opponent can then whip out if/when they kill it is also a thing.

750 points? Ouuuch. For the rules it has, it 'aint that good.

You can give it a flare shield, making it AV 13 12 11 with 9HP. That said, its still a 700+ point flier that arrives halfway through your game. For that price you can have 2 typhons, 2.5 spartans, 2.5 caestus rams, 5 sicarans, 10 predators, or just grab yourself a titan/couple of knights.

Yeah, I'm aware those are old as gently caress. They've got tons of free space, but at least they come with a decent amount of extra knives, pouches, and canteens for variety. Catachans and Cadians deserve to get resculpted to current standards. At least they have pretty cool command squad kits.

I'll admit, I've probably been spoiled by being a long-term marine player. It's not like the 3rd edition tactical box (when every marine was spread out over a couple of tiny individual sprues) came with any options beyond a flamer and a missile launcher, but the models have always been easy to convert. Once you got a few other boxes laying around you could start adding some character to your army with arm/hand/head swaps. Kid-me somehow managed to do this without any scars.

The ball joints are nice, but the extremely static arms/legs makes it hard to do much with them (and the way they are built actually means you have a lot less freedom of posing than it might otherwise seem.) The new Commander kit is actually a great example of what I'd love to see with a redone Crisis box- its joints are mounted a lot more outwardly and thus give it way more freedom of positioning.

But regardless of that the paint job for that dread is frankly amazing.

Today I discovered I've got enough Kasrkins to make up a Marine Corps Infantry squad and enough Guardsmen to make up an entire US Army Infantry Platoon.
Hooray for boredom.

Now I kinda regret not thinking of that earlier so I had tried to make some of them look like team leaders and such when I was assembling them. Sure it'd be pointless from a game perspective but it'd look kinda cool anyway from a fluff perspective. Even if underslung grenade launchers isn't really a thing in 40k to the best of my knowledge.

Go figure how it'd all look on a lasrifle though. But it'd the quickest way to add stuff like Designated Marksman and Autoriflemen at least. Especially if you're like me with no green stuff skills at all.
