Thanks, but I already tried that. No luck. Turns out my problem with brawls is likely part of a bigger problem.

I've been having CTDs, and they've gotten more and more frequent. It started with CTDs and infinite loading screens during cell transitions. I've been hanging out mostly at Whiterun, so I figured they were caused by either the Dawn of Whiterun mod adding too much clutter and NPCs, or the higher res texture packs eating up memory. I started saving before entering or exiting anything in the city and just dealt with it. Problem is, they've gotten more and more frequent. Now it's a 50/50 whenever I transition if it will load or crash, and I'm starting to get them just walking through the streets or down a dungeon corridor.

Edit: Looking at my saves, Mod Organizer says they're missing plugins, even the first vanilla save I made right before character creation in Helgen. I meant for it be a clean slate I could pick up once I finished testing the mods, but I guess I mixed something up.

Any ways to increase the stability of the game? I watched Gopher's video about Skyrim's issue in reserving additional blocks of memory for itself, but since the fix for that was supposedly included in USKP, I didn't pursue it. Should I have? Or somehow set the initial memory block to be larger?

I've heard that ENB can actually increase performance if pre-sets aren't used. Is this true?

Several tweaks I've heard about included editing Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini, but I don't see them. I have a Skyrim_default, and a Skyrim_(blank) for each graphical setting. Is this because I'm using the Steam version, or launching with SKSE from within Mod Organizer? I tried to enable crashlogs in each of the .ini I could see, but it doesn't work.

Finally, my specs:

Processor: Intel i5-4590 @ 3.30 GHz
Ram: 8192MB
Video: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 750 Ti w/ 4022MB

Are you running the SKSE memory fix, stableugridstoload, etc? It sounds like skyrim's getting overloaded with scripts/data and crashes (common problem, but pretty much eliminated by the community). See: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/50244/

The required mods section with the stableugridstoload mod added should fix the ILS and CTDs handily, unless there's a ton of really broken mods. I'm running a boatload of old, new, abandoned, buggy-ish mods, everything with 2K tex, an ENB, without doing the bashing/merging/cleaning stuff and crash maybe once every 4-5 hours.

Also, skyrim/skyrimprefs are in the skyrim folder under my games, not in the game folder.

E:Also I just had my mind blown: ENB was pushing me down to 30-ish fps constantly, until i started just hitting F4 (default "clear vram" key in enb) when i start playing. now i'm pushing 50 and 70+ indoors :stare:

You have to edit the .ini files through mod manager, it has it's own set tied to your mod profile. Also did you run your load order through LOOT, cause it looks a bit messy to me.

Ok. That makes sense based on how MO keeps everything separate from your actual game folder.

I did run the load order through LOOT and that was what it recommended. About a fifth of them weren't recognized though. I'll have to manually assign them a place after doing some more research on them. Also, MO apparently disagreed with LOOT and wanted to reorder about seven of the mods, the Serana mods, and the ones relating to Paarthunax and Better Objectives.

I'm going to be using the stability guide this time around and get rid of some of the more script-heavy mods. Hope that fixes the issues.

Or, at the very least, Spriggans (easier since they're already in-game).

The MO thing is actually an an experimental feature to order your install order, which is seperate from your load order. And yeah the key to a stable mod order is moderation. Although LOOT shouldn't actually be unable to recognize something since afaik it's based on mod content and the master list is just for exceptions.

I'm having the same issue with weird polygon artifacts on the menu periodically followed very shortly by CTD as this guy: http://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/1251248-strange-flashing-polygons-on-inventory-and-ctd/

I've already pretty much done all the stability fixes I can do but I was wondering if those papyrus settings posted in that thread (post #10) were safe and also if they would actually help in any way. My game is probably about as stable as I can make it without culling mods -- sometimes it'll go for hours without a crash and sometimes it does that weird artifact thing and crashes every few minutes, kinda depends on where I am and how much stuff is active. Just wondering if that was another fix I could throw on the pile or if I should just appreciate it when this jacked up house of cards doesn't collapse every 10 minutes and save a lot to mitigate when it does. I've ironed out a lot of the other stability issues I was having and this is pretty much the last major issue that seems to be generating CTDs. I didn't start seeing it until I started using ENBoost, so if that's creating the conflict I can deal with it vs turning it off and going back to how awful things were beforehand lol.

At least the polygons work as a warning and let me get a save in before everything goes to poo poo :v:

The linked papyrus settings are dumb. iMaxAllocatedMemoryBytes=8388608 tells skyrim to use 8mb instead of the default 75kb for stack allocation. This fucks up the script engine since 8mb per running script is a gently caress of a lot and can make scripts die and possibly crash the game. The rest are probably harmless but won't help you. They might help trade fps to make scripts more responsive. Maybe.

Artifacting is almost always caused by either bad drivers or overheating or failing hardware. My bet is your gpu's fan is full of dust and/or cat hair. Go get a can of compressed air and give the gpu and the inside of your case a good cleaning.

I have a temperature monitor installed and apparently my GPU doesn't get much above 50C but it isn't super powerful so it's probably just doing the best it can. I opened the case and cleaned everything out fairly recently but I'm sure it wouldn't hurt to hit it again since that poo poo builds up quick with pets in the house.

I'm actually considering digging out my Oblivion disc, because I was reminded today that Nehrim exists and I realised I'd never really given it a fair shake when it came out. I know this isn't an Oblivion thread but can anyone weigh in on that mod?

The overworld is really dense and has tons of different biomes. The dungeon interiors are fantastic and really push the limits as to what I expect out of that engine. Being a huge total conversion mod, it's a bit janky in all places but surprisingly not too bad all things considered. The story is a enormous mess with a pansy elf boy taking center stage, but if you like Kirkbride-esque confusing poo poo you might get a kick out of it. It's been years since I played it, so I may just be exaggerating how incoherent the story is.

Really the environmental detail is the best part about Nehrim. Don't go into it expecting it to fix the combat system or the potato faces.

Edit: Oh, and all the dialogue is subbed from German. I don't know if that matters.

Don't. Apparently the team behind Nehrim is close to releasing Enderal in the Skyrim engine.

Are they? I mean, they're going to be separate landmasses and there's no exact date for Enderal's release, so I don't see why he shouldn't give it a shot just to see if he likes it.

So, I just remember that I had Skyrim on steam and after a friend showed a image of his modded skyrim. I decided that I should finally play Skyrim.
I do not have any of the DLC don't know if I should get them or not.

Was wondering if I should use BOSS or are people now using LOOT?

Looking thru the guide and getting some of the basic mods, which was the recommended ones for first timers.
-Unofficial Patches
-SkyUI
-Weapons and Armor Fixes
-Clothing & Clutter Fixes
-Even Better Quest Objectives
-Better Dialogue Controls
-Better Message Controls
-No Poison Dialogues
-Brawl Bugs Patch
-Timing Is Everything
-The Choice is Yours (so your quest log doesn't clutter up)
-Smart Souls/Aquisitive Soul Gems
-Thieves Guild Requirements (So you don't get roped into the Thieves Guild automatically)
-Bounty Gold (optional)
-Faster Mining
-Guard Dialogue Overhaul (no new dialogue, just makes them use existing stuff correctly)
-Static Mesh Improvement Mod (makes things look worlds better)

Any more mods that would be fun to have first time thru this game?

definitely use LOOT over BOSS. it's much better.

if you're just looking for basic mods that aren't likely to conflict with much, I'm a fan of iHUD (which hides elements of the HUD when they're not in use and is customizable), A Matter of Time (adds a clock on the HUD, fully customizable), and Immersive Patrols (puts random NPCs wandering around the overworld to make it feel more alive). Cutting Room Floor is also a cool mod that restores some cut NPCs, dialogue and small quests back into the game but isn't vital by any means.

Ruins Clutter Improved is a good companion for Static Mesh Improvement Mod that adds detail to some of the objects it doesn't touch.

Some of the more expansive gameplay mods (Thunderchild, etc.) Require Dawnguard and Dragonborn, so if you want those, you'll have to get the DLC (Steam Sale's coming up anyway so you're in luck).

Nehrim is great and worth the playthrough, just get a graphics modding guide for Nehrim (most apply to Oblivion too) and Deadly Reflex 5 and you're good to go.

The devil you say!

On the question of DLC, I was pretty pleased with all of it. Even the ones with bad writing add enough new places and items to make up for it, also I fully expected Hearthfire to be poo poo but its actually kind of cool.

Modded Skyrim Legendary Edition is pretty much one of the best open world games ever imo.

It helps that really no one else attempts to make games this big with the same level of interactivity. I'm sure Witcher 3 will be good and huge, but will it let me stack the books I stole on a bookshelf? In alphabetical order?! No!

I think the success of bethesda as a company can be pretty much chalked up to appealing to everyone's inner hoarder and/or kleptomaniac.

Yeah, I like that one over the Better Bookshelves mod. It's more stable.

I'm looking forward to the Steam sale to either get the DLC cheap or the Legendary edition. I suppose I should beat the game at least once before starting over with more DLC/mods.

It's not really have to so much as it is highly recommended/will save you much pain and anguish in the long run. Plus, leaving mods in your Skyrim install does kinda defeat the purpose of installing MO in the first place, which as a proper OCD/autist goon, you should find this upsetting.

Nah. Long as you don't get the big everything-destroying stuff like SkyRe, the campaign will feel at worst the same, and at best 100x better.

I think it's actually kind of surprising that no one else has tried to make a similar game. You'd think the success of Elder Scrolls would lead to others trying to copy the formula. TES is basically a genre unto itself, and it's unfortunate that Bethesda basically has a monopoly on that genre.

There have certainly been attempts, Two Worlds, Kingdoms of Amalur and the more recent Dragon Age: Inquisition all feel like they are taking heavy cues from TES. A huge limiting factor on more competition from appearing is budget--these games are basically single-player MMOs and require resources so immense and a division of labor so large, it can be easy (while still frustrating) to see how these games release as giant messes of code tenuously held together with wishful thinking.

Not necessarily beat, but at least play enough without DLC/mods to get a feel for what you'd like to change about the game. Then start tossing in mods in small batches to ensure stability.

Fallout?

I'm really worried about the Elder Scrolls "genre" now that the IP has been giving the MMO death sentence.

Also BethSoft, using literally the same engine. And with ESO, I'm with you in the worry boat-hopefully they wake up at some point and go back to making moddable open-world games.

Except that wasn't Bethesda who developed it. It was done by Zenimax Online Studios, a completely different studio under the Bethesda/Zenimax banner. You can bet your rear end they're working on the next Fallout/Elder Scrolls with their main team.
