Comixology are doing their 12 days of Christmas with a new free comic every day. Today's is The Wake by Sean Gordon Murphy and Scott Snyder and is well worth it.

I agree that the first issue is good and shows a lot of promise. People should enjoy the first issue.

The book very sharply jumps after the 6th issue, and up until then, aside from minor hints at what the back half will contain, it's a pretty solid horror comic (with a bit of a cliffhanger ending because the story isn't over). The back half then rushes to the end while simultaneously kinda dawdling through issue 11 - I'd call it worldbuilding but not in a cohesive enough way for a book that ends at 12. Then the final issue is a complete exposition diarrhea dump for an unearned ending. I've seen defenses of the ending that reference the bits strewn through earlier issues as setting the stage, and those defenses are horseshit because the dump is largely irrelevant to the story previously told. I've seen another defense or two that basically praise the ending for setting up a D&D campaign setting/fanfiction source and I guess that holds more water but then consider the praise.

Long story short the first half feels like the first arc in a series that should go around 30-36 issues, but which suddenly ends at 12 and does a poor job of leading to that end, particularly in hindsight.

Snagged that! Heard great things.

There is an Archaia graphic novel sale. The only book I've heard of is Jim Henson's Tale of Sand, because it won some awards, so I purchased that. Anything else on sale that anyone can recommend?

Charles Soule (Swamp Thing, She-Hulk, Letter 44) rules. He has Strange Attractors in there. I haven't got around to reading it yet, but that's probably good.

I'd also be interested to hear any more picks :)

Mr. Murder is Dead wasn't bad if you're into that sort of thing.

The only other thing that I've read is Black Charity, which I would think recommend.

Everybody better have gotten Glory :doom:

First collection of Afterlife with Archie is half price with the code ARCHIE, it's easily one of the best horror comics currently going and so much better than you'd think Archie with zombies and monsters could be.

I guess this is as good a thread as any to mention there's a bunch of comics from Dynamite Entertainment in a Humble Bundle, including a different free one you can get every day.

It's a big list but I don't really know enough about comics to know whether there's anything there to get excited about.

I can't help but wonder if Cursed Pirate Girl might be best as a digital comic, just because it's so ridiculously detailed and you can zoom in. But drat is that ever a good comic.

Glory and Afterlife with Archie too.

American Flagg won a ton of awards, and The Boys is the "Grrrr, superheroes are SO STUPID, I HATE THEM SO MUCH I'LL WRITE ALL ABOUT THEM" classic that people on this here forum and elsewhere on the internet love to gush about (I think Garth Ennis is a talented writer that has indulged his own foibles more than a good editor should allow). Mark Waid doing the Green Hornet should be fun. Legenderry seems like such a goofy concept that I can't help but like it, the Bob's Burgers book is supposed to be very accurate to the show and Django/Zorro was fun.

Garth via Crossed (and another fellows Fall of Cuthlu) left me so dejected and drained that it actually helped ease me into Marvel Superheroes (along with the Cap Returns Ultimates Cover). Man is good but sometimes given to...extremes.

His war comics are fantastic though and I think Dynamite publishes them.

Prophet owns and everybody should have it. Even if it's just for the various artists. The Ennis stuff is...alright. Rover Red Charlie would be a lot better without the Avatar style art but it has some nice moments and typical Ennis. The Top Shelf sale is good but I want to say everything has been on sale for cheaper at a point.

I recently got back onto comixology, and it's pretty decent. But I noticed that in the UK, if I pay through Amazon payments, I end up paying more with bank fees. Would using Paypal bypass that, do you think?

How do you feel about porn? How about gay porn? Underage porn? S&M porn? Incest porn? Combinations of any or all of the above?

Sure, there's some literary allusions and a story that ties everything together, but it doesn't seem like it was meant to be read for the plot.

Lost Girls is...underwhelming. It's Moore trying to do high brow porn and it doesn't really succeed in being either porn or that interesting. There's what could be some interesting work with the the panel layout and relationship bits but if you want more interesting Moore you could get the League books. And if you just want porn just get some Multiple Warheads or other Brandon Graham books.

Okay, yeah. I mostly wasn't seeing reviews that made me want to pick it up, but every once in a while someone will claim it's genius. I'd be looking for the genius more than the porn, in this particular instance. Thanks for reaffirming my instinct and saving me some cash!

Mind flay the gap.
I just got a bunch of comics from a Humble Bundle and would like to read them on a Nook Color, but the ePubs cut off the right edges of the comics. Is there a fix for this or an app that does it better?

(I tried the pdf versions but a lot of them aren't properly tagged (at least for the Nook) so they all show up as "Layout 1" in the library.)

Today's free comic is Little Nemo: Return to Slumberland. I haven't read more than the previews, but those looked really good, so I'm going to give this one a go. I'm probably going to end up with the TPB either way in the end as this book is kind of exactly what I want.

Tons of great books in there.

Deadpool, Nova, Superior Spider-Man, Thor from the Marvel Now stuff. 30 Days of Night, Parker, Locke and Key, The Maxx and TMNT turtles stuff from the IDW stuff. And there is so much quality in the Love and Rockets collections, it's almost dense 300 pages of funnybooks.

Also looking forward to the first person to post those panels from Andrews stint on Astonishing X-Men.
