I feel comfortable recommending TW1 to someone only if they're a big fan of old RPGs. TW1 isn't exactly an old school RPG but I figure fans of stuff like Baldur's Gate are probably more likely to be able to look over its considerable flaws than someone used to Mass Effect or something.

IIRC, before this game, the main thing CD Projekt Red had done was localize Baldur's Gate 2 into Polish. They had very little money and it's kind of a miracle this got released at all. It's probably more fair to judge it by Indie game standards than by the standards you'd hold to a AAA game release

Baldur's Gate 2 (as well as the rest of the saga and pretty much all other Interplay RPGs, among many other games) was localised and published by the main CD Projekt company. CD Projekt RED was created as a subdivision pretty much solely for the purpose of making the first Witcher.

The soundtrack in the first Witcher game is fantastic. I'd recommend getting that game for the soundtrack alone. It really fits the setting and makes things seem more bleak and depressing than it actually is.

I never understood the complaints about the combat in W1. All I ever see is people saying "it's just repetitive clicking!" but that's pretty much the gameplay of any Diablo clone or cRPG.
And most people still like the Arkham series which is almost exactly the same.

Well, that's a pretty simplistic interpretation of those systems, even W1 isn't "just clicking".

In Diablo the clicking is easier, it's not timing based to any significant degree. But you do get lots of interesting abilities, you don't in W1, not in the same way at least.

In Arkham, (which are imho some of the best brawlers ever made) it's similar in that you are clicking in time with events, but in the Arkham games there are multiple timings you need to hit, rather than just clicking A over and over. As the game progresses they add new enemies with new attacks and weaknesses that force you to change your tactics (slightly, it's by no means a difficult series).

None of that is really true in W1, hell, you rarely even need to switch styles mid-combat, once you learn which style is good for which monster you are basically done with it.

I don't think the combat in W1 is awful, but it's not really fun or engaging either.

EDIT: Also, clicking in time to the mouse cursor lighting up is pretty obnoxious. It makes it feel like I'm playing Guitar Hero more than being a swashbuckling badass. Badasses don't play from the GUI.

The potion system in the first Witcher game was the best of the two (so far). You could just pop them at any time. It could make a really tough fight into a really piss-easy fight and I enjoyed getting into the deep of it. The Witcher 2 was a step back because you had to meditate to use potions and, unless you had a guide or played through the story, you wouldn't know what was coming up. I didn't like that change at all.

Plus the 3rd option for the end-game was great. gently caress the racists and terrorists. I choose to fight for myself then proceed to kill them all.

A major theme of the books (and the games, starting in TW2) was that sometimes you can't just stand on the sidelines. A "neutral" ending to TW2 wouldn't work thematically.

Yeah, having to prepare potions beforehand is a nice sentiment but it led to me only ever having Swallow and Tawny Owl active when I was expecting a tough fight. Also, it made me fight the Draugr without potions because of the part inbetween, which I still think is bullshit.

But clicking on the dudes in the right rhythm is exactly what the Arkham games do. I don't think the addition of counters really makes it that much more deep.
I'm mostly just sad that people start playing a cheap RPG and slam it because it doesn't have a perfect action game combat system.

Magic is super powerful in the books, more of a "Bewitched" style. Twitch your finger, people explode on chunks, or transmute into smoke, or are transformed in geese shaking a leg (true scene from the books!, done by Yennefer). Obviously in the games it's much less powerful.

I never felt as though the problem with W1 was the fighting gameplay - that's fairly competent for what it is. The dialogs were the really janky part for me. Blank-eyed mannequins reciting an alien robots idea of noir-speak right past each other.

If you want to kill everything in W1, just put points into Igni.

I think they redid a lot of the voice acting in the Enhanced Edition. But hey at least Geralt's voice actor learned a lot between the two games.

Yeah I know. I'm just saying I got the impression the block was largely psychological (it happened after she drew on Fire, which is a big no-no, especially for her), and if she really did bring Geralt and Yennefer back from the dead she clearly has some kind of magic still.

I've heard that they barely had any voice direction for the first game's dub but I have no idea if that's true.

Dandelion is just terrible in general.

I've only played the Enhanced Version and I never quite got why people bitched about the voice acting so much. Sure, it's not GOOD but I wouldn't consider it bad enough to complain like some people did. I didn't realize that it was worse at one time. Maybe I should try to find examples of the original dub and see what all the fuss is about.

The voice work is bad, but "bad" is just on the lower end of average for video games. If you compare it to an average Bioware or Obsidian game, TW1's voice work looks like crap though. And I think that's what most people are doing.

Loved TW2's though and I suspect TW3's will be at least as good.

Oh, the pre-Enhanced voice acting and writing was far beyond "janky". I'd go as far as "atrocious".

But the final product still forces you to review every conversation once it's finished, so that you can figure out how each sides monolog relates to the other side's.

Bioware may have good voice actors, but their voice direction is really awful. I noticed it especially when watching some scenes from DAI. It's like, the writing is fine and the VA is fine, but it just sounds like everything was read out of context.

Just finished W1, the endbosses face melted so fast from Igni it broke the script. Pretty neat once you get past the run back-and-forth bullshit of the earlygame.

Actually I missed it a little when going to W2, god damned consolized inventory and quickwheels.

A lot of the W1 vanilla stuff was a mess because it was just sloppy translation. There are plenty of examples on Youtube for the curious, such as: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNp25hRMbTA - EE just brought in voice actors other than second cousins of the developers, as well as fleshing out the dialogue to be a bit richer.

In W3 news, I saw something on PCG a week or so ago where they were complaining at the news that Ciri is apparently going to be playable in the game? Something about WAHHHH THE WITCHER IS ABOUT GERALT. I had to laugh.
