I'm considering playing Touhou. Would I miss anything for skipping the Dos games?

Besides, it's not like there's any story in the games to miss.

You should only play Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler, that will teach you everything you need to know about Touhou forever.

I'd say skip em for the time being. I started off with Perfect Cherry Blossom and think it's a great place to start. It's not the easiest game in the series, but far from the hardest too, doesn't have any mechanics that are too terribly obtuse. My favorite patterns are from UFO, but unfortunately that game is guilty of both obtuse mechanics AND ball busting difficulty. I was a complete neophyte to bullet hell when I picked it up myself. In fact, I hadn't really played any shmups since the early 90s at that point, so my shmup experience had consisted of mostly Gradius III and Super Aleste. It was a bit tough adjusting. The first time I played, I ran out of continues on the stage 3 boss in easy mode...and then I realized how focus and hitbox worked and was able to make it to the stage 5 boss. I'd say I was able to 1cc normal mode after maybe 20-30 hours of playing or so, and ever since then, I've been able to 1cc most normal modes after 10 attempts tops (except UFO which took me most of a summer to 1cc on normal, and Subterranean Animism, which I still can't) I would say that I personally enjoy the gently caress out of the PC-98 games, but that has more to do with the fact that I find the FM soundtracks and 8-bit graphics with an insanely high sprite-count and smooth framerate to be charming than any particular gameplay merits, though I also think they're fun games, if not as mature design-wise as the later ones. I also have no problem seeing projectiles, although this is a common complaint. However, as stated, a good jumping-on point they are not.

I don't mind if it's hard. I love slamming my head against a brick wall. Is there any particular reason why I shouldn't play Touhou 6?

It's just not as fun. Touhou games are all about the silly game-specific mechanics, and EoSD has none of that.

It's about 80% memorization, you have to play on harder difficulties to play stages 5 and 6, the art is really really bad, and the midi instruments are also bad.

To top it off, the bullet patterns aren't as cool as the later games. Subterranean Animism may be one of the hardest in the series, but drat if it isn't pretty.

I started with 6 and it taught me a couple of bad habits for future games. I say start with 7 or 8. 7 is probably better at showing off more of the average Touhou experience but 8 is easier and better suited for easing you into bullet hells if you've never played any, but it has got quite a few mechanics that aren't in the rest of the series. More than 7 at any rate.

6 is also one of the games with the most random, out of your control bullet patterns. Famitsu posted some more news about the PS4/Vita lineup but I don't think it's anything new.

Gensou no Ronde was announced (Touhou version of Wartech/Senko no Ronde) and themes for the Vita were released. Admittedly not a huge update considering how long it's been since the previous announcement but at least it's progress.

I actually got that for the PC, and unless they've really revamped it it's not a very good game.

I played a little bit of 7. I rocked the first level pretty hard on normal, so I turned it up to lunatic then got my rear end handed to me at the boss, though I feel I did decently well before dying. Now I'm seeing blue and red bullets not just with my eyes closed, (but especially with my eyes closed.) I dunno if I'm just not good yet, but I feel like I need to fine tune the controls or something. It feels like I move a little too far.

Oh, that's right. EoSD, PCB, and IN had some input delay issues, most noticeably in the first two. These should fix them.

If you honestly think the original UN Owen sounds good, you need to get your ears checked. Seriously, just compare the EoSD version to the DiPP one. BlitzBlast fucked around with this message at 11:43 on Dec 18, 2014 |

I like the EoSD instrumentation, the game just needs a volume control. I don't know how ZUN managed to not include one.

EoSD was the first Touhou I played and also somehow the first one I 1cc'ed on Medium (from a total of like three games I've managed to do that with, not counting PoFV which I've 1cc'ed like 30 times). I'm not sure if that just makes me some kind of bizarro player or what
