I did commissions for a while in college. I put out projects at a pretty okay tabletop standard but absolutely everybody wanted something for free. It got to the point where I was painting for about $3/model when I just said gently caress it and walked away. I'll paint things as gifts or things for friends, but ugh, not commissions, not again.

The difference though, and the actual problem with BTP, is that they're dishonest. Their results are not up to the level they promised their customers, they're also inconsistent, badly designed (bad color combinations), utilize poor technique (drybrushing where it's not appropriate, for example), and have a business practices that are at least shady, if not illegal. They also as we have seen have terrible public relations practices; leaking customer communications, attacking critics, whining and making excuses and just being super unprofessional in every way.

It's entirely possible that painting miniatures, in the US, is not viable as a business plan because customers are unwilling to pay enough for quality work to make it profitable. The correct business response to that situation is to try a different line of business; not lie and cheat and bitch and moan and rip people off to compensate for the bad market conditions.

The main thing to remember about BTP is that they are run by a guy who embodies all the worst aspects of both Mormonism and libertarianism, with an exceedingly fake "hail-fellow-well-met" nature slapped on top of it. He also thinks he is going to be the Henry Ford of miniature painting services, with delusions of grandeur about making his Valhalla geek gathering the next Adepticon, becoming a motivational speaker, etc., etc. He also apparently feels that being a small businessman should immediately render him immune to criticism and customer complaints, because running your own business is the noblest calling one can have, and so he should be cut extra slack because, hey, he's not a big faceless corporation, he's just one dude (who runs an assembly-line style painting service with people that can apparently be swapped in and out at will).

Once you figure out all that, then you realize why Gately does the things he does, and why you'd be better served setting both your models and your money on fire than you would be commissioning work from BTP.

I don't know why anyone even does commission painting when the rates are horrible. Western society is now so used to getting cheap labor from China for amazing goods (those PS3s and iPhones should cost more were they produced here, company takes most of the profit on top of that, etc.) that we balk at paying $10/hour for painting services. I work at Uni doing nothing at all while studying for $10/hour and would never take a painting commission even though people have asked me. I tell them I probably take 5-10 hours on my models and like hell are they gonna pay me at least $100 for a single mini.

The rates that BTP is charging for minimum quality stuff should be the baseline. That people charge even less for better quality is insane. I just don't understand how people take up commissions that take tons of hours at less than minimum wage.

People don't like paying very much for any kind of art in general. A painting a bit bigger than a postcard with a price tag of $150 makes most people's heads spin, even if they make a decent income. They'd be more willing to buy it if it were $20.

We're used to the idea that you can take a photo and print it on your home printer at good enough quality to put up on your wall. As a society, we just don't have significant understanding of the time, let alone the skill, that goes into handcrafting basically anything.

I always get shocked that people have $700 to spend on getting stuff painted! I'm not poor by any means, but with a normal life I have to justify every purchase and spread stuff out. having a birthday in January tends to mean I get a glut of models at the start of the year then spend the rest of the year painting them, with the occasional purchase in between.

I know! Even if that's in your budget for plastic mans, that's $700 worth of more stuff you're throwing away!

I can juuuuust about understand a mentality that sees the army as a tool for playing the game/socialising, and doesn't have the time (or want to spend the time) to assemble and paint. I guess? For me, the assembly is a huge part of the experience of purchasing the model, and as I've gotten better at painting I've come to see that as part of the fun too. The idea of subcontracting that out...never!
