They escorted me out right after they told me. It was scummy but the people responsible for it are in an office 100 miles away. Helpdesk was primarily out there and I was the lone tech.

No severence pay and I was there for 4 months. I don't qualify for UI benefits.

I'm in South Jersey and I just updated my resume and sent several out already. Hopefully something bites.

Got help whoever has to ever escort my out of anywhere. I hear how employers want to just walk you out and ship you your stuff but gently caress that, my stuff is leaving with me and that's that. I mean what is going to happen? Someone going to try to arm bar me for grabbing my backpack from my desk? Call the cops on me for grabbing my lunch box out of the fridge? If so, which brave soul is going to go down try that one out? :allears:

A lot of places do this.

Let's be honest, most of us could cause some serious damage with less than 60 secs in front of a keyboard, so it's common sense to prevent it.

And if you make it a policy that applies to everyone, you shouldn't get too offended - though I understand how it feels insulting when it happens to you.

Or some variation thereof. I don't blame any company for not trusting a freshly fired former employee for anything.

Getting fired the week before xmas without some outrageous cause is still pretty lovely though.

Don't expect anything beneficial from any employer, ever.

I hate to say it, but being there for 4 months doesn't engender much of a relationship for severance pay.

Although in NJ, if you've worked for 18 months consecutively, you are eligible for UI - Xenoletum, be sure to file for UI no matter what. At least get your name in the system; if you don't qualify for UI benefits directly you get access to the options the UI offices can provide. Placement, training, etc.

I've been contributing to RRSP's since I was 18 but at such a minimal amount. I seriously cannot stress enough to people in their early 20's that yes, you do have to start worrying about retirement now if you plan on retiring by 55-60.

They escorted me out because I pretty much had an emotional breakdown the minute they told me due to a bunch of e/n Bullshit with my life. They didn't want me losing my poo poo in front of everyone and causing a scene.

No severance pay because I was just a simple phone jockey/email wrangler.

Guys, it finally happened.

After an unlucky lightning strike at our transmitter caused a huge budget cut and scrapping of my earlier approval for upgrades, corporate has finally REapproved upgrading our domain controller from NT to 2012. They also approved upgrading our small-business grade router (which shits itself and shuts down whenever pulling >20Mbps) to an enterprise grade firewall with filtering, antivirus, and bandwidth allocations.

I just finished making the orders and they should be here in early January.

It's a Christmas miracle :unsmith:

Tried this once (NT4->2000->2003->2003R2), except the NT short name had a special character in it, so Windows 2003 choked.

Had to build a new domain from scratch. I was much happier with that outcome.

Set the domain created date to a week after NT first introduced active directory. Claim it's the oldest known surviving NT domain.

Also, lots of people are taking holiday, so someone suddenly not showing up for work is not a cause for gossip. Plus people are worked up over the incoming holiday season: Which is a nice distraction for getting rid of someone with minimal fuss.

In other news, I was in Auckland today, down the road from Xero. I did consider nosing around to have a look, but decided that being escorted from the building screaming "YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND! I KNOW NZAMOEBA FROM THE FORUM! HE'S A GOON LIKE ME! WE PRIVATE MESSAGED TWO YEARS AGO!" probably wasn't the best course of action.
