It's that time of year again, so what's everyone's favorite non-traditional Christmas albums/songs? Sufjan Stevens' Silver and Gold is pretty amazing, ranging from straight covers of carols to weird original songs. "Christmas Unicorn" is a blast, my girlfriend and I spent all last holiday singing it at each other.

Christmas Tree Island by the Rosebuds is also very good, made up entirely of original songs. This was my favorite find last year and I think this thread recommended it to me.

"That Was the Worst Christmas Ever" is beautiful.

That album also has a cover of "Alphabet St." by Prince for some reason.

edit: "That Was the Worst Christmas Ever" is on his other Christmas album, my mistake.

I think it sounds a bit different from Shrines. It's still Purity Ring, and I like it, but it's a different sound (not just talking about the vocals). The instrumental parts felt disjointed and foreboding, like the weird, creepy things she sang about were about to happen, or it was the soundtrack to those things. Then again, the lyrics were more disturbing on Shrines. Lots more bodily fluids.

Super late in posting thing but I saw Spoon last Friday in Austin. I'm not really a big Spoon fan but they put on an absolutely amazing show. Every member of the band has a great deal of musicality to their playing. They did more with their lighting in a few songs than I've seen bands do in their entire sets. Got a video of "Do You" below:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IxHkr6ZJK0I

Though an interesting stand out was one of the opening bands "St. Paul and the Broken Bones", a blues band that played a really good opening act. If Spoon hadn't been as great as they were, they may have eclipsed them for me. I've included one of their songs below:

Greta Morgan just released an album under the name Springtime Carnivore and it's pretty interesting. It reminds me of The Drums, Tennis, and St. Vincent. I really like this song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICTqhHGnu5o, but the rest of her album is fun to listen to (Sun Went Black, Talk To Me Slow).

SKATERS reminds me a bit of old Interpol and that early 2000's rock we all used to love as melodramatic kids. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSaPHFsZTZo

I think this song is an example of a track where I like the instrumentals, but feel like the lyrics detract significantly. It's mellow rock but the lyrics are whiny and cheesy. It's grating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XtBY7_3gj6o by Red Riders

As a longtime huge Modest Mouse fan, I think I'm lukewarm on this one after hearing it twice. It doesn't grab me and make me think "Oh hell loving yes, I am so excited for this new album!", but I guess I don't think it's poo poo either.

It sounds exactly like everything else Modest Mouse have been doing over the past few years, which, cool I guess, but it doesn't sound like they've either gone back to their roots or evolved in any way. Not much to get excited over.

I enjoyed Red Riders back in the day. Their first ep's and album scratched a good 00's guitar pop itch. Nothing groundbreaking but solid tunes. Two of them are still doing their thing with a little less polish with 'Palms'. I saw them supporting Living End no their club tour and it was a fun show.

No One's First and You're Next is the dopest poo poo they ever put out so give me more of that. The new song is pretty good, but not stellar. I'm not afraid of the new album sucking at least.

I'm seeing them in March in KC, almost eight years to the weekend since I last saw them there. They're a blast live, despite how some of their TV performances seem to turn out.

Indulge me, goons: Since the year's almost up, can I give Douglas Dare another mention? I don't think he's gotten any coverage outside of the UK; I only came across his debut album, Whelm, when browsing through Drowned in Sound one day (something I don't typically do; nothing against DiS).

Reminiscent of Thom Yorke's older stuff and James Blake, but a bit more straightforward.

"Swim"
"Nile"
"Lungful"

Hi friends! As you may have inferred from my previous posts in this thread, I am a huge fan of The Olivia Tremor Control and Circulatory System. Well, some audio tracks by these guys have been made available on the Olivia Tremor Control forum over on e6townhall dot com. One of those tracks is titled "Same Place," so I think it could perhaps be a song or an early version of a song for an Olivia Tremor Control album that may be released in the future. Members of the band have previously stated that a new Olivia Tremor Control album titled The Same Place will be released in the future.

The song is super beautiful, so I went ahead and uploaded it to youtube. Here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joFeElgjOuY

I'm aware that it may perhaps have been kinda sorta inappropriate for me to put the song on youtube, so I'll take it down if anyone contacts me suggesting that I do so. Yay for E6 and the Olivia Tremor Control! Rest In Peace, Bill Doss!

Edit: And yeah, like I stated in the youtube description, many thanks to all of the members of The Olivia Tremor Control and to e6townhall Forums Poster applesacks! And to the author of the fishing blog called Fontinalis Rising, from where I took the image featured in the "video"!

The new Parquet Courts album is reminiscent of the scruffier side of Pavements music.

E. Also Beck is a good songwriter has a huge back catalogue since the 90s but release a pretty good album this year..

Similar era bands that you might know of Blur, Sebadoh, The Apples in Stereo, Superchunk, Yo La Tango. All have similarities for different reasons.

The Weakerthans always kinda reminded me of Pavement. The lead singer, John K. Samson is one of the best songwriters out there IMHO. Some of their songs might be a little too... Canadian through. These are worth a listen:

A Plea From a Cat Named Virtute
