Elfsong is the sound of a dial-up modem

Seriously, though, I never read those books (I remember I brought the first one to school once and the teacher took it aay and never gave it back :argh:), are they worth reading?

They aren't terrible, but Brooks has written better books (The Word and The Void series). Elfstones was the first one I read and there were some legitimately scary parts (I was a kid at the time). Brooks is pretty good at writing terrible, evil poo poo without descending into gore-porn like some other authors tend to do. The Shannara books are pretty standard fantasy and competently written. Also pretty much devoid of the weird sex poo poo that seems to go hand and hand with fantasy novels these days. Speaking of Wishsong, I'm shocked that Manu Bennett isn't playing Garret Jax. I guess that might be a little too close to Slade.

On the Arrow front, I really hope they don't have Ollie defeat Ras in combat. They went to great lengths to show just how easily Ras could clown him, and he works so much better as a behind the scenes force. There's no way Merlyn didn't know what would happen, so that set up had to be part of a long game plan. It's amazing how smugly Ollie went to his doom, you'd think he'd realize that he was totally outmatched.

I only read one (Sword of Shannara) and would recommend it for anyone who really liked Lord of the Rings and wants something competently written and cut from the same cloth. It's like a beach read but with elves and dwarves and hobbits half-elves.

I think Ollie knew. Thats why he said his goodbyes. He was keeping a brave face and he's arrogant enough to think he had a chance but he knew what he was doing. He was sacrificing himself to save Thea.

I definitely don't want him to beat Ra's and I don't think they need to have a rematch. Ollie died so that fight is done. If he comes back that seems like a technicality, not a failed job. Ra's beef should be with whoever resurrected Ollie, not Ollie himself. And if Ollie comes back and says "look, this is all a plot by Merlyn to brainwash my sister into killing Sara so you and I would be at odds" his willingness to die for it should be enough to convince Ra's that its the truth. That seems like the sort of thing that would sell Ra's and Nyssa and buy Oliver time to prove it/save Thea/catch Merlyn/whatever.

Then Ra's can blend back into his role as the scary force in the world that Ollie has to worry about but not directly address.

The teacher was trying to protect him by keeping him uninformed. "He will never become a nerd if i deprive him of his bad fantasy novels." But alas, the deception only drove him to seek out Malcolm Merlyn Lowtax and become something far worse than a mere nerd. He became someone else, he became something..... awful.

See the teacher should have explained. There should be some kind of school outreach program for at risk kids who delve into fantasy too early. Help coach them back out into the social circles and assure them they can have nerdy hobbies when they develop the ability to balance them in their lives.

We could save so many social lives.

Binged through thus show the past couple of weeks. The characters are dumber then your average brick on a regular basis but the action is goddamn amazing and the main character is pretty great - I love how the actor can pull off like three different personalities convincingly. And the Ra's fight was just beautiful. This show can really surprise you too.

But holy gently caress enough with the goddamn mind control fakeouts. And they killed off the wrong Lance.

Ra's al-Ghul's co-creator Dennis O'Neill approves of Matt Nable's portrayal of the character

Did Neeson ever get the same form of approval (not wanting to start a shitshow, just legitimately curious).

E: Guess there's a minor spoiler in there the bit about the writers not including the Lazarus Pits, so read it at risk.

It's not a spoiler. Dennis O'Neill doesn't work on the show. He is not saying whether or not they are going to use the Lazarus pits, he is just noting that adaptations of Ra's al Ghul frequently drop that part of the character. He finds that funny since he thinks the image of Ra's rising from the boiling green pit is the most iconic image of the character.

While large chunks of the League of Assassins' arc was botched this year (basically leaving it in hiatus for five episodes to tell other stories was not a smart play), Matt Nable drat near makes it work.

Largely because it isn't just a rehash of other portrayals. David Warner's version always played up the manic insanity at the heart of the character - slightly more grounded than a Bond villain. Liam Neeson's portrayal is seeped in foreign arrogance, boasting whenever he can. Various comic writers have pushed into a whole host of modes: overblown supervillain, doddering old fool, antihero and father figure to Bruce Wayne.

But Arrow's version of the demon's head? He's weary. Not old or weak, just tired of the same cycles playing out again and again. Matt Nable could have played "you're just a boy" as an insult, swinging a metaphorical dick around. Instead, Nable says the line like a literal truth - Oliver's only been a vigilante for a hair past thirty months. He is just a boy, not in his mental state but in his actual learned experience.

That line delivery was goddamn impeccable. Anyone else on the planet would have said it dismissively or as a brag; he just sounded disappointed and tired and it said so much about this version of Ra's Al Ghul. Up until then, I kept telling my wife "dammit, why isn't Pedro Pascal playing Ra's?" and then just that one single line sold this actor, and character, to me so loving hard.
