:siren: The Great Goon Giveaway Part Three :siren:

You may have come to A Shutup Wesley Christmas and you may have even made it to The Great Goon Giveaway Part Deux, but chances are you haven't even heard of either of those events and have been toiling in space obscurity for the two years since our last bash. In any case, I'm pleased to invite you to our holiday party, conveniently scheduled after the new year, on Saturday, January 3rd at 3pm PST (23:00GMT). We're still not sure what day would be most convenient for people, so please speak up and let us know!

For the uninitiated, a Shutup Wesley holiday party is a glorious time of brotherhood and revelry, where we come together in the holiday spirit to participate in contests for fabulous prizes! This year's prize pool is bigger than ever before, featuring: one of each lobi, lockbox, and promotional ship, 50 Fleet Ship Modules, 50 Starship Requisition Upgrades, and plenty of master keys, doff packs, bonus pools, and various loot to assuage even the greediest soul.

For anyone who's been to one of our parties in the past, beware this year's event has a Shyamalan twist: pubbies will be invited as well. Party details are being released to goons first, so you should have an advantage and I hope the competition will bring out the best in you! The public invitation will be made in a few days, so try not to poo poo it up and lets get back some of that good we may have lost since we launched NoP Public Service. If nothing else, maybe we'll teach St Olivia what a real giveaway is supposed to look like.

Everything pertaining to the event will happen in the "WesleyChristmas" channel. Its open now so join up if you'd like.

Featured Events Include:
  1. Trivia
  2. Costume Contests
  3. Where's Wesley
  4. Tactical Ski Racing

Trivia
  • TOS/TAS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT Trivia
  • Star Trek Online Trivia
  • DJO Trivia
  • And more!

Costume Contests
Show us your mastery of the tailor. First place wins lockbox ship of your choice, runner-up receives a lobi ship of your choice.
  • Striped Sweaters - The best looking Wesley Crusher wins!
  • Supertrekker - Come dressed as your favorite Star Trek character!
  • Medical Emergency - Space can get pretty dangerous... come as someone desperately in need of medical attention!
  • For Science! - Come dressed as your favorite real or fictional scientist!

  • Meet the Devs! - You've seen them at conventions, on livestreams, and in interviews. Now come dressed as your favorite Cryptic employee!
  • Best Overall - Make the best costume you can come up with!
  • Worst Overall - Literally the worst tailoring abomination you can create!

Where's Wesley

A series of Shutup Wesley characters will be hidden throughout the known galaxy. At the time of the event their names and locations will be revealed. Be the first one to find them and open (and keep open) a trade window with them to receive a fabulous prize pack, including:
  • A Voth Ship Pack - A Bulwark, Bastion, & Palisade
  • An Elachi Ship Pack - A Sheshar, S'Golth, & Monbosh
  • A Jem'Hadar Ship Pack - A Jem'Hadar Attack Ship, Heavy Escort Carrier, & Dreadnought Carrier
  • And one easier to find Wesley that will give out a shuttle of your choice!

Tactical Ski Racing
If you were at our parties before you definitely remember this event, whether you loved or hated it. Slap on some Frosted Boots and line up for a race! Playing dirty is encouraged so bring your cover shields or any other obstacles you want to throw at your competitors. Winner will receive any remaining ship of their choice.

:siren:Foundry Foundation - A Goon Exclusive!:siren:
All good Dentists and followers of Dear Leader must be well versed in the history of our people. Create a foundry mission extolling excerpts from the Book of Butts. We've seen some real gold from goons in the past, so show us what you can do! The winner will receive a Jem'Hadar Ship Pack!

So make sure you've got your costumes created in advance, pick up some Frosted Boots from Q's Winter Wonderland and get ready to have some fun!

Hope to see you there,

The Members of Shutup Wesley

Premium ships are limited in supply, choices will dwindle as the event goes on. Freighters will be considered lobi ships for prize purposes. The event will begin with Costume Contests and end with the Ski Racing, with trivia being asked in between events. Where's Wesley will run concurrently until each character is reached and the prize is claimed. I'm sure this event will draw some of our most strident opponents, but being a shitlord during the party will not be tolerated. We hope you won't engage them and maintain a truce until the party has ended. This stuff is a pain to coordinate already so don't make it harder on us.

They've kind of given with one hand and taken with the other so far, so it is hard to say. The queues themselves are nowhere near as unpuggable as they were at launch of DR, but space is still a crap shoot because many players are just really bad and the now mandatory optionals were a crap shoot back when they were truly optional and difficulty wasn't raised. This has made a situation where a semi-competent pug can complete most queues if you're lucky to get such a group, but players can no longer carry whole teams.

Then exp, which is actually worse than at launch, because they "readjusted" exp values needed to level up without changing those values for exp from kills. I wouldn't be surprised if the exp changes are part if what's really killing the game, as most STO players don't put too much thought into gear let alone how to get the most out of it and costs, but leveling up is a very immediate hoodwink that every player faces.

Most disheartening for me is I'm not really optimistic about any new future developments because it feels like everything announced is some hustle. Even the interesting new stuff from DR like Intel abilities are tied to dil costs and the spec grind.

I've maintained that Cryptic could fix 90% of the bad will and player population numbers by doing a few simple things.
  • Remove the hard-failure conditions from Advanced queues, all of them. Even when they're mostly easy there's still the cases where if someone messes up (or intentionally fucks with the group) you can still fail and get nothing for your time spent, and this is the sort of punishment that unfairly targets new or poor players. All it takes is one or two early or dramatic failures to make people swear off particular queues, and doubly so when it's from something out of their control like bugs or a map that forces the team to split up. I get the idea that Cryptic wanted to encourage people to do normal queues or something... except that the time::reward for those are abysmal and you can't progress in reputations without the tokens from advanced queues, so they're clearly the "intended" mainline progression route. The only alternative to this is to nerf the difficulty so far into the ground that the failure condition is irrelevant (like with CCA right now), but that just makes the mission boring and defeats the whole point of having failure conditions anyway.
  • Drastically increase the specialization XP rewards from queues. They need to be at least 6-10k. As it is the most "efficient" leveling route is grinding Argala repeatedly and this is insane, they're actively pulling people away from grouping.
  • Cap the number of specialization points you can earn per day along with a drastic decrease in the XP needed. Cryptic clearly wants to make it a long-term grind, which would be fine except that there's nothing in place to stop or discourage people from just sitting there grinding it out through the most efficient (boring) means possible. Yeah this makes it more like the rep system, but it also keeps people from going crazy with boring patrol bullshit while also allowing at least the chance to work on alts.
Change even two of these and I'm certain you'd see the queue population double overnight. The hard failure condition change remains the most baffling decision I've seen Cryptic make so far too, and I'm just dying to see what the rationalization for it was. I'd say it was to cater to the people whining that the game was too easy... but that's what the Elite queues are for. And if it's to slow progression or something, it's incredibly asymmetric (punishing new players more than established ones) and is done in the most discouraging and demoralizing manner possible. There's other things that desperately need fixing (the upgrade costs are a little more manageable now, but there's no loving reason rep items/sets need the massive surcharge, especially when you're paying out the rear end in dil to buy them to begin with) but changing all that doesn't matter if it isn't fun to play the drat game.

Add 'add some ship for the peanut gallery at 50 or 60'. Stopping progression at 40, with everything else scaling up whilst your ship does not is a foul thing in and of itself. Though I imagine it will become a badge of honour soon if it isn't already; 'I did everything in the game with a level 40 ship. Without a carrier, either'.

Or at least made free ships upgradeable too, to like T4U which could be roughly equivalent to T5 non-upgraded counterpart and awarding a free token at 50.

Edit: ship prices are all real weird across the board. Like t1 ships costing like tens of thousands of dil and its like...why

Not as strong as you'd expect.
Don't think of Dil, think of the ZEN, AKA Real Cash. If it's a 'real' ship, the price goes up because people will really want to fly the 'real' ships NOW. It doesn't matter that they'll be in it for a short time, all things considered. There's also the fact that some prices ain't been changed for the times. 40 used to be the top level, as did Mark 10. Changing your top-level ship was, I believe, meant to be a big thing. Hence the 100,000 cost to buy a new one.

Dil in itself was, if I recall what I've read correctly, added as a sop to the player base because apparently way back in the day there were a bunch of currencies and people complained. Then of course, more and more have shown up again, in the marks and Lobi and Fleet Credit, to say nothing of secondaries like Neural Processors. Though half of those are a carry-over from elder days when there were more. Remember the old way of dealing with Borg rep, with random drops required to get a hold of gear? And the Borg console was a story reward?

Though I speak on things I don't have total perspective of.

It's kind of secondary at the moment since there's the critical and immediate issue of the game not being fun, but yeah ultimately in the long tun Cryptic is really going to need to do something about the new player entry. STO has historically been really good about this; you never needed to buy anything to compete, and while the free T5 ships weren't top-tier they were still more than sufficient for the relatively easy content. But step back and look at what's facing a new player starting now...
  • You need a T5U or T6 ship. If you don't have one you're literally three ship classes behind... T5 fleet, T5U/T6, and T6 fleet, though the latter have only shown up in event and lockbox stuff so far. It's not... insurmountable, but you're looking at multiple consoles, a good 20+% of shield and hull, and other fairly crippling drawbacks unless you buy in or get lucky enough to start when an event is going.
  • You need to get your reputations leveled up. This takes a fair bit of time, both in grinding marks and the month and chance of time for the jobs to tick over. It's one of the easier steps here but it still needs to be done. The traits are basically required, and you'll need pieces of gear from multiple reps. And borg neural processors don't come as easily or quickly these days...
  • You need to grind specializations. If nothing else, since you're a new customer who hasn't gotten a bunch of T6 ships, you'll need some of the traits that come from this. And of course the individual bonuses are really noticeable once they start stacking up. But if you're joining now you're looking at hours upon hours of grinding patrols to make meaningful progress here in the short term.
  • You need to get MkXIII or XIV equipment. No it isn't really required, but Cryptic's been honest about the fact they tuned the encounters to MkXIV gear and if you're below that you're going to be in trouble. The recent buffs to XIII and XIV weapon damage just makes this more noticeable; if you roll into 60 with Mk X-XII weapons, especially if they're green or blues, you're at a noticeable disadvantage.
  • You need to either wait months to grind up your crafting skills, or somehow scare up millions of credits to pay for the dozens of upgrade items you need to get those MkXIII+ items. There's no way around it.
  • You'll need to run a lot of dilithium. A lot. Maxing out reps, running queues, and other things will get you a lot... but ultimately to get to "endgame spec" you're going to need hundreds of thousands or possibly a million or more to get your gear and upgrade it. If you're playing the game the way it looks like it should be played (one character, only gathering dil through queues and such) this is a massive blatant paywall.
It's just... when you lay it all out this, you can see how Cryptic's ruined their accessibility. A lot of it can be circumvented with cash sure, but it would be a lot of cash and it would only get you part of the way there. Worse, a good number of the hurdles come just from the Delta Rising changes. :psyduck:

It's not really well known, but (intentionally or accidentally) a bunch of extra options appeared in the alien chargen at or shortly after Delta Rising launched. The Hierarchy head/face, Xindi hair, several other forehead/nose options though I forget which ones were there previously. I haven't seen them used much, but in this case they can make him even more piteous exciting.
