ETA: Christmas came early: Discendo Vox posted in the food addiction thread! :holy:

Discendo Vox posted:

Lemme jump in here and say that food "addiction", like most "psychological addictions", are believed and theorized to be fundamentally different from the addictions people develop from controlled substances. Under that model, there is some thing in the controlled substance that separately induces a neurological state/mechanism that produces/reinforces the addiction behaviors, with broader psychological effects.

None of this is to dismiss the problematic behaviors or mental states associated with food, but the term "addiction", in this context, is ultimately describing a very different phenomenon. Food ingredients, and food in general, aren't addictive in the same way that marijuana or alcohol or heroin are. (Caffiene is the one possible exception, but that's still being debated).

On this point, the disorders in question are distinguished in the DSM along these lines, as you quote. Scientifically, "addiction" means something narrower, even if the patterns of behavior the thread describes are incredibly harmful.

edit: sidenote: the DSM remains terribad.

When they were building the light rail system on the existing tracks back in 2003-2004, they commissioned unique tile and artwork for every station on the line, usually a mix of town specific and state-relevant elements. Here's what was on the Delanco station, which I was at since I'd just drop my car off at the mechanic a few blocks away (needed pollution control fixed so it could be inspected and pass before the end of the month):

I think the color palette for the non-art tiles at each station is also supposed to represent the general colors of the Delaware River in the section flowing closest by?

I just use one large can whole tomatoes for batches with 4 pounds stew beef and 1 pound ground beef. You are using way too much tomato.

When I made chili last week I just used a tub of extra spicy salsa I got at a local store, that took care of the all the tomatoes and most of the chilis. Lazy, but effective and tasty.

30th street station is amazing I wonder if they still have that weird buffet deep in the bowels of the food court where all the food tastes kind of the same and it's a bit overpriced. Haven't eaten there since 2012 I believe.

Also Chicago is not a real city not like the beautiful old stone piles of the rotting Northeast it basically has no reason to exist and I hope I never visit it.

A co-worker came into my office yesterday complaining about how he's going to have to pay 800 bucks in taxes because of Obamacare and in a couple years he'll have to pay $2000. I don't have any sympathy since he makes more than I do, eats out two times a day, buys lotto tickets on a daily basis and probably never even shopped for health insurance. I kinda hinted at this (Are there any expenses you can cut?) and hew blew a head gasket "I can't even afford to pay 800 bucks in taxes! I don't have a wife like you! I hate that friend of the family!"

:ughh:

Obamacare sucks for a lot of reasons but I think he underestimated how bad/entitled people are with money.

It's a pretty major commuter route out of South Jersey to Philly, and it's gotten a decent boost in ridership since it finally has a connection with the River Line light rail that runs directly under the bridge it uses to cross from Philadelphia.

You might be thinking of ACES, which was a train service offered from New York City and Newark to Atlantic City a few years back, and only ran for a few years. That service didn't stop in Philly, though it had to go all the way to North Philadelphia in order to switch onto the current tracks to Atlantic City.
