Die Hard and Groundhog Day would each instantly become way worse if their holiday settings were swapped. Groundhog Day is a better movie for being set on Groundhog Day. Die Hard is a much better movie for the fact that it takes place specifically around Christmas. It helps us feel out-of-it, like John McClane is, because here are all the traditional trappings of Christmas -- the travel, the office party, the gifts and reunions and decorations everywhere. But John, who's used to a New York winter, has the sun in his eyes the whole time. Then when things get rolling, there's an unconscious tension from the fact that all this action, death and mayhem is taking place at the happiest time of year. You know what's a good way to enhance that tension, like the same way you might watch a horror movie in the dark? Watching it at Christmas. Die Hard 2 tries to feel equally identifiable to modern Americans at the holidays, which is why it feels like a retread. It asked the question, "We've seen what it was like when this guy fought with his wife at her crappy office party. Now, what would it be like... if he was stuck at the airport all night?" I watched Home Alone 2 this year, and it was precious time I could have spent watching Die Hard again. emgeejay fucked around with this message at 07:32 on Dec 22, 2014 |

I really liked Thief, but is it just me or does it have some atrocious audio mixing? I would have no idea what anyone was saying if not for the subtitles, every conversation seems to drowned out by traffic or some other background noise.

I had the same experience until I invested in a cheap(ish, by home theater standards, anyway) 5.1 sound bar setup; now movies where the sound used to drive me up the wall are much more enjoyable. No more subtitles, no more turning it way up to hear the dialogue, only to have a musical sting blow out my eardrums.

If you like Thief after seeing it, it just hit Blu-Ray via Criterion (comes with a DVD of the remaster as well). On Blu-Ray with the right sound system, it's a loving experience. Also, I enjoyed the documentary Dam Nation on Netflix. Interesting subject, beautiful shots.

Aye Doc posted:is there anything else even vaguely similar to It's Such a Beautiful Day on Netflix? There isn't anything vaguely similar to what Don Hertzfeldt does in general. He sort of made this kind of thing, at the very least he should be considered the father of modern "random poo poo". Basically watch some cyanide and happiness or something. He created a culture and now everyone is doing it in a really lovely way. I feel sorry for the guy. I wonder what it's like being asked if you drew a pop-tarts commercial when one of your biggest hits is a 9 minute long tongue-in-cheek slander of marketing and advertisement. The closest you can get is something made in flash. He drew each frame individually and used camera tricks for special effects. No computers used in the making of his films. The final product is reems of 35mm shots, not an electronic file folder. NeoSeeker fucked around with this message at 23:39 on Dec 22, 2014 |

I read in an interview somewhere that the imitation actually motivated him even more. In a good or bad way I cannot recall. Every other "IM RANDOM HAHA FUNNY" thing I've seen just tries too hard or does it wrong in some way. With Don it's almost as though that's what he was born to do. It's a radical difference. I'm pretty sure Hertzfeldt is a pretty normal guy that just has a weird sense of humor/imagination. Like it's weird to me when people see that sort of thing and say "man he must be on some serious drugs" when I'm pretty sure that would get in the way of him doing stuff like this. I mean, all of his stuff is pretty much done by him, by hand with no computer assistance. Hell, from what I heard at screenings, he uses and old timey gigantic animation camera. He's a strange guy with a strange imagination but that doesn't mean there's something wrong with him. Edit: this is in response to a comment that has now been edited out.

Sorry about that, It didn't come out right. The whole bill trilogy has a bunch of mental illness themes about it. I wouldn't be surprised if he suffers from it or at the very least he has someone close to him who does. Not to mention a bi-polar upswing is like a meth-high for some people. Also, not saying he does a load of drugs (I think he's a straight edger myself) but drugs wouldn't gently caress with this more than it would anything else. I think he just drinks a shitload of coffee and has a handle on his own faculties so much so he's able to use his "differences" to his advantage. I'm gonna have to say just get "The Animation Show". It's on netflix rental. Holy gently caress It's Such a Beautiful Day is amazing. I have seen all the shorts but this is awesome. Awesome in the classical sense. I did see one animation glitch though I don't remember seeing in that short. The sequence where it describes him picking up his new medication you can see a "bill ghost". Presumably erased and corrected and left behind. I saw Billy's balloon and later Rejected in theaters when they came out and thought they were the funniest, weirdest things I'd ever seen. Who would have known they would inspire 15 years of the unfunniest loving people in the world to make stupid random wackiness. I hate the style so much I was actually worried about going back and watching those recently, but they are still really good. Way better than any imitator. I haven't watched It's Such a Beautiful Day yet, but his other newer stuff seems to have evolved a lot from "my anus is bleeding" anyways. Few people have been ripped off as much as that guy.
