Spartan is still going to use Microsoft's Chakra JavaScript engine and Microsoft's Trident rendering engine (not WebKit), sources say. As Neowin's Brad Sams reported back in September, the coming browser will look and feel more like Chrome and Firefox and will support extensions. Sams also reported on December 29 that Microsoft has two different versions of Trident in the works, which also seemingly supports the claim that the company has two different Trident-based browsers.

However, if my sources are right, Spartan is not IE 12. Instead, Spartan is a new, light-weight browser Microsoft is building.

Windows 10 (at least the desktop version) will ship with both Spartan and IE 11, my sources say. IE 11 will be there for backward-compatibility's sake. Spartan will be available for both desktop and mobile (phone/tablet) versions of Windows 10, sources say.

http://www.theverge.com/2014/12/29/7463949/xbox-executives-leaving-microsoft-tv-apps-dead
But more importantly, Multerer's departure means that almost every single person on the Xbox One team we profiled last November when that console launched has now either left the company or been reassigned under new Xbox chief Phil Spencer. Microsoft's original vision of the Xbox One as a general-purpose living room platform has been drastically scaled back. Spencer is a games guy, and his focus on games is paying off, as the Xbox One just outsold the PS4 for the first time in November. But all the people who were trying to build something bigger? Well, they're gone. Just go down the list of the people in this feature video we made — a video focused on Xbox TV:
  • Marc Whitten, former Xbox VP, is now the Chief Product Officer at Sonos. Whitten was the biggest champion of the Xbox One as a TV platform; he and I argued about the TV integration many many times.
  • Ben Smith, the Xbox TV program manager, is also at Sonos now.
  • Multerer, who was in charge of the platform that enabled the Xbox One to both play games and run Windows apps, has now left.
  • Kareem Choudhry, who was in charge of Kinect development, is now in director of development for all of Xbox. Kinect is how the Xbox One controls cable boxes over IR, but it's no longer bundled with the console and few games support it. And Phil Spencer seems pretty happy the Kinect is dead.
The only person we profiled who has the same role is Jeff Henshaw, who remains Xbox group program manager. That's a big turnover — and an even bigger change of vision for Microsoft's next-generation console.

REDMOND, WA — Microsoft Corporation has announced that they will be changing their company name to Halo in order to "emphasize how much more [they] are than Windows, the most-used operating system in the world." According to Frank Holland, Corporate Vice President of Halo Advertising and Online (HAO) , the new company name reflects the "dynamic world that [they] intend to build, with technologies that surround our customer's mind-space and enable a more productive and healthful future for us and our children's children."

Holland was joined on-stage by a hologram of Cortana, their proactive personal digital assistant and noted naked blue big-titty video-game lady.

that little box in the upper right corner is a tv show that is playing

that's not a preview icon that's how big the show is and if it's widescreen it stays the same width and gets even smaller

edit: note that both screenshots are from launch game dead rising 3 because I'm pretty sure nobody's actually used it since november of 2013

I used to use picture in picture to watch TV while I leveled up rpg characters

ofc I used to play jrpgs too so yeah times change

basically ms got mad that people were on their phones or tablets while watching tv and since they have basically no marketshare in either of those spots they just shoehorned tv into the one product they had that hasn't been an utter failure over the last decade

pip worked best on 16x9 TV's back when 4x3 material was the norm, and cable boxes weren't so you could tune to two different stations easily

at this point i'm surprised that they haven't just thrown in the towel and shipped a WebKit based browser with Windows 10, deprecating IE

but on balance it's kind of a good thing. WebKit running on 90% of all browsers isn't a significantly better situation than Trident running on 90% of browsers. it's still a situation where the de-facto specification is 400,000 lines of C++ as opposed to an actual spec (see also that one time where some people tried to make SQLite part of HTML 5)

its ms so it would be a surface speaker that only worked with the surface despite being bluetooth, have a 6 hour battery life, sound like poo poo and cost $300. and come with one unique feature that nobody asked for or used like being able to act as a microphone only for the surface.
