depends on the server specs. distro doesnt matter. id use lxc, no point w/ kvm or xen. or coreos if you want to deploy docker containers. lxc is closer to a standard vm though

if you're on windows then use vmware

kvm+qemu on linux is mostly intended for server virtualization but it can run a windows 7 desktop acceptably too. you have to pay red hat if you want signed guest drivers but w/e do you really care about a "Test Mode" decal?

it can run windows, it can even run windows native drivers and have pcie slots passed to it allowing windows to fully control the devices

see ur distro specific wiki and search kvm. theres multiple full gui tools to use it

edit: wow i totally hosed up reading that post

i just happened to be looking at running linux in a windows host yesterday so heres some links but i havent tried any of this yet:

qemu(+kvm) builds for windows: http://qemu.weilnetz.de/w64/
vmware player: https://my.vmware.com/web/vmware/free#desktop_end_user_computing/vmware_player/7_0

kvm runs windows, it doesn't run ON windows. it's a linux kernel module. qemu on linux uses it to virtualize the cpu instead of emulating it.

you need a virtualization-capable cpu to use it but that's most cpus these days, poo poo even my 32-bit-only atom router has vt-x for some reason.

The solution seems obvious. The author should simply hire a few dozen top-end architects, coders, QA, and process experts and task them to create a new Unix. This one will be so small and wonderful that everyone will use it. Now, this can easily cost $7M/year for salaries alone. The chaotic mess that is Unix was created by hordes of people largely working for free. Without them, there would be no mess because there would be no code. We'd be running pure ASCII terminals and would browse using Lynx. Unixy bliss can be had for $7M/year. So, throw down.

This is probably also why libtool's configure probes no fewer than 26 different names for the Fortran compiler my system does not have, and then spends another 26 tests to find out if each of these nonexistent Fortran compilers supports the -g option.

That is the sorry reality of the bazaar Raymond praised in his book: a pile of old festering hacks, endlessly copied and pasted by a clueless generation of IT "professionals" who wouldn't recognize sound IT architecture if you hit them over the head with it. It is hard to believe today, but under this embarrassing mess lies the ruins of the beautiful cathedral of Unix, deservedly famous for its simplicity of design, its economy of features, and its elegance of execution. (Sic transit gloria mundi, etc.)

well, minimal is certainly one word to describe old unix.

the sad thing is, as bad as autotools are the alternatives are all worse. at least autotools can be used to automatically build software for packaging without an inordinate amount of wailing and gnashing of teeth.
