The Interview probably isn't thread-worthy, but I thought this was interesting. There was a big showing in Seoul where a bunch of North Korean defectors and human rights activists got together and watched it. Seems the reviews were very positive all in all. Anyone seen it yet?

I get making a big mockery of the regime, but you'd think a movie that was intended to get into North Korea and have an influence there wouldn't be as much based in dick jokes, and would be well-researched and pointed. It doesn't sound like the kind of movie that makes you think and leads into a positive perspective, that North Koreans could really get behind.

It's a seth rogan and james franco movie.

They were probably really high for the entire creative process when making the film.

‘The Interview’ Gets a Tepid Thumbs Up at Seoul Screening

quote:

At the screening in Seoul, Sokeel Park, director of research and strategy at Liberty in North Korea, a U.S.-based non-government organization that helps North Koreans escape the country, said that while he liked the movie more than he expected, he was also frustrated at the missed opportunities — particularly when so much global attention is focused on North Korea.

Mr. Park in particular expressed reservations about the movie’s reliance on low-brow humor and flimsy plot points, singling out a dramatic moment towards the end of a movie involving a fake Pyongyang grocery store—something that wouldn’t ring true for North Koreans.

“There were so many mistruths that they could have chosen, so why do the grocery store?” he said.

The very premise of the movie, too — of a drug-taking, casual sex-partaking American doofus being recruited by U.S. intelligence to kill North Korea’s revered leader — “could turn off people in North Korea.”

“It plays into the narrative that the Pyongyang propagandists are trying to put out there,” Mr. Park said.

Just because defectors might use it doesn't mean that Seth Rogan et al. had any higher purpose they were taking seriously when making it. East Germans found Pink Floyd's playing The Wall by the Berlin Wall inspiring, that doesn't mean that was the goal in writing it.

I was arguing with the second part of your post. You'd think if it was stupid and racist more Koreans would be calling it stupid and racist and not largely applauding it.

That's likely, but at the same time, it was pretty clear that any high budget Western film like this was going to make it into the Koreas, regardless. Just look at "You Don't Mess With the Zohan." I guess they should have done a better job taking that into context as they were making the film, as it shouldn't have come as any surprise that it was going to be widespread in the region.

I don't quite understand the comparison with "You Don't Mess with the Zohan". And I really don't understand why you were expecting optimized propaganda towards North Koreans from people writing low-brow humor who expect to mostly make their money off of an American audience.

Sure they made it for money, but your implication was that they made it by being racist and stereotypical towards North Koreans. It's clearly not the case.

quote:

Where is this motherfucking applause? It sure as gently caress wasn't in the article you just posted.

Did you try reading it without an agenda? I find that helps.

quote:

Many were watching the Seth Rogen-James Franco comedy for at least the second time, and the laugh lines generally hit the mark with the audience. But most people in the room were watching it with an eye to how it might be received in North Korea.

In spite of Pyongyang’s protests, it may not be too much longer until some ordinary people inside North Korea see the movie. While the flick has only been available online for about a week, plans are already afoot to float the movie into the North via balloon launch. The movie is also likely to find its way into the country through China, a popular channel for smuggled South Korean soap operas.

Some of the more Rogen-esque sight gags — gay jokes and ample public displays of affection, for instance — were likely to rankle and confuse North Korean viewers, said Lee Han-byeol, a North Korean defector who attended the screening and shared some of her thoughts with the crowd afterwards.

But Ms. Lee was confident that the general message of the movie would get through just fine. “We’re all humans,” she said.

Because it was pretty popular among Palestinians and Israeli's. And I wasn't expecting "optimized propaganda." Just accuracy and a good overall message. Sounds like the latter was achieved, but not the former.
