Also I bought The Stanley Parable on sale and even then I felt ripped off. Like 80% of the game is identical to the original free HL2 mod only with better graphics and a few new endings. Considering how many videos they made and the huge demo they released it's almost embarrassing how little content is in the actual game.

Character action is a pretty loose term but you usually use it for the type of game where you run around hitting XXY and poo poo to do a combo. Virtually always third person behind the back or over the shoulder. Can include puzzles and platforming but it doesn't have to, I normally see it applied to games that focus on combat. Devil May Cry, God of War, and Bayonetta are canonical examples.

Just going by what I've analyzed of games referred to as "character action" and what they have in common, I'd say they're games where not only is there a heavy emphasis on action, but the mechanics have a certain depth to them that allows players to maximize and even exploit some of their features to perform impressive feats, be it combos (Devil May Cry) or effortlessly destroying enemies with little consequence (Ninja Gaiden). All the while the game being very quick and responsive, with an emphasis on maintaining high, solid framerates. The closest genre comparison one could make is to a fighting game, as those games also have in depth systems that players use to succeed in high level play, and is also a genre where framerate is an important factor.

Best way I could summarize the difference between character action games and other action genres.

Does it change anything besides the graphics? 2033 was already a decent-looking game. There were basically only two parts I didn't like:

1) Hoarded military-grade ammo the whole time only for the game to end before I used it all
2) The acid trip minecart ride felt like a cliched rip from Stalker.

You can play three styles: Ghost, Panther and Assault.

Ghost is classic splinter cell, where you sneak around and either knock people out or just avoid them. Assault is when you go in guns blazing and Panther is conviction style murder of everyone while nobody can find you etc.

There's a few forced sections where you have to take people out (protecting people is the big one) but you can play in classic style if you like with a ton of cool gadgets like the tri-rotor etc.

Only bad thing is no more Michael Ironside.
