Technowolf posted:(4) Oh hey, thank you for reminding me that was going down. I was curious exactly how pointless it was going to be. And it's just as pointless as expected. I wonder how much more it cost to do the drug testing than to just let the families that tested positive have the drat benefits. Now the question is, will this continue to be funded pointlessly, or are we going to pretend it never happened and they'll go back to hassling TANF families on the assumption they're users? Technowolf posted:(5) This. Like five years ago we got just enough snow there was some on the shoulders and medians on Highway 49. None on the main roadway. I still saw a dozen cars that had slid off the road into ditches between Hattiesburg and Jackson. I also got to drive through the Stack regularly to visit my parents when I was living in Hattiesburg. Hattiesburg features what I can only call the Supercollider at the junction of Highway 98 and I-59 in Hattiesburg. East and west traffic from Highway 98 entering north I-59 are merged from two lanes very suddenly into one lane at 60 mph then shot onto the Interstate itself (and to show this isn't some entrenched design, getting on south I-59 from Highway 98 at the same junction is done via a regular turn lane and traffic light. Ugh.). Technowolf posted:(6) And then he talks about how we don't need handouts, what we really need are solutions that--get hosed you useless piece of poo poo. I've just been linking news articles from Mississippi to family every time they suggest I'll want to come back to Mississippi one day (I moved to Texas last July; a lateral move in some ways I grant you).

Yeah, I think this is the best option if people want to keep doing the GAAs. The winners are pretty much inevitably just from the most recent batch of comics, so spreading them out is a good idea. Also a great naming convention.

Since the thread is shiny and new and we're covering more cartoonists, I figured I'd dredge up some cartoons from the guy featured in my hometown paper: Chris OBrion. I dig his style and the fact that he's pretty left-leaning in a boring conservative southern city. He was the staff cartoonist for the Roanoke Times from 2007 to 2014, but the paper revamped their website in 2013 and lost the archives for that year, so I can only cover up to 2012 or so. He apparently doesn't do much cartooning lately, just random one-offs for papers or special interest groups. I moved away from VA in 2009 so I'm not always up to date on the in-state issues, but national and some local stuff makes perfect sense to me. Most of these are pretty local and I'll try to supply relevant context for them. Christmastime 2007: Roanoke is an old railroad town that's overrun with older people and doesn't offer much in the way of high-tech jobs or a reason to stay. The largest employer there by far is Carilion Health, who manage lots of hospitals in the area. He has a few pet issues and recurring themes. I though I'd saved more of these but apparently not. VA has slowly been going blue, and in the last two presidential elections it went to Obama. If you want to buy alcohol stronger than beer or wine in VA, you have to get it from the state-controlled ABC stores. They have inconvenient hours and I hated them. I can buy vodka in my local grocery store in AZ so I'm not sure why he's so opposed to privatization of the system. I don't have all the details though, maybe they were just going to setup private stores instead of licensing grocery and convenience stores. I didn't follow this too closely. I like this one because I'm a filthy godless heathen. Giles County Schools wanted to display the Ten Commandments in a school showcase that featured historical documents. The end result of their legal battle with the ACLU was to display a photocopy of an old textbook with a photo of the tablets in it. People are way too religious out there. One of the big local issues that he covered a lot was the local art museum. It's a funny shape and doesn't fit in with the local architecture, and I'm pretty sure all the old people in town were greatly upset by it. The first one here ties in with the lack of young people in town. Virginia is crazy. Obama apparently did extensive campaigning in southwest VA. I've been to one of these gas & bait stores. Several of them actually. I have no regrets. OBrion's real hot-button issue is gun control, which in SW VA (I have no context for the above cartoon) (VA legalized concealed carry in bars) (This one made a whole lot of people very angry and I think it actually found its way into the 2012 thread) Here's a listing of all of his cartoons from 2007-2012. Sadly both he and I can't find an archive of 2013's cartoons (I asked on twitter) and the Roanoke Times never got back to me, so I leave you with this, the anti-JR ROSE!

For a while, I was a local editorial cartoonist...didn't last long. Partly because I hated it :-p The local cartoonist is Beth Cravens at Weakley County (TN) Press. She's pretty cool, but she mostly does local issues. She drew this, tho: Here's a Chuck Asay parody I drew last year: And a commission I got from this thread (for a gift certificate for a new AV on this site) Also, reposting this for the New Year And Ron Cobb 1 2 3 4 5 6 7

An entire year of cartoons and ~1500 pages means that a ton of stuff definitely gets lost in the shuffle. Ramirez's Benghazi-Libya cartoon in 2013 almost slipped through the cracks before I noticed that it wasn't anywhere in the nominations, and so I ended up nominating it at the last second.

That article wasn't super clear. Is the school board trying to get away putting a picture of a fabricated prop representing the ten commandments alongside actual photographs of real historical documents? Because that seems crazy.

Yes. They conceded to put a photocopy of a textbook containing a picture of a fabricated prop in their display along with other recreations or photos of historical documents. This was a pretty big fight out there, and it's every bit as absurd as you think. The area is overwhelmingly Southern Baptist IIRC.

Graeme MacKay is yet to post any cartoons in the new year. But... Have you ever wanted sweet real life political cartoon merchandise? Have you ever wanted a Teddy Roosevelt throw pillow? Or a mug with Stephen Harper, Crusader King on it? Or an iPhone case with a stylized version of Canadian Parliamentary Sergeant-at-Arms Kevin Vickers on it? Well, you're in luck, because those are all things you can buy, technically. I'm not linking his actual store because this isn't an advertisement and he's not exactly hard to find if you really want. Post some new cartoons Graeme! Just please not lovely ones. For the record, these are the original cartoons he took those images from:
