Alright so I bought New Vegas in the Steam Holiday sale, and I just got done modding it. I skimmed the thread and I saw some mention of bad weirdness in mods that really should be free of it, like New Vegas Redesigned 3's creepy faces and Mojave Mission's sexism. Are there any other popular mods where that kind of crap crops up unexpectedly? What are the best replacements for what those two mods do? Is Mojave Mission really even necessary?

I think one of the unofficial patches changes a bunch of characters from women to men because "They're trained soldiers". Honestly the game is pretty good without mods and it's worthwhile to play the first time through without any overhauls or anything like that. Maybe some quality of life mods like the refillable water bottles.

That's Mission Mojave, that's the sexism I was talking about. I've already played New Vegas before, and most of the modding I'm doing is minor stuff like graphical cleanup, combat rebalancing and weather. I was just surprised to learn about the weirdness of Mission Mojave and New Vegas Redesigned 3.

I mean most modders are probably creepos but they don't tell me so I can live in happy ignorance. What I would suggest is just looking at screenshots of FCO and deciding whether you care or not. For what it's worth, I find face mods to be the least valuable mod when it comes to upgrading the look of New Vegas, but that's just me. Anyway yeah if you want a face mod, NVR 2 or FCO. I think NVR2 is built off FCO even? as for other hidden creepy-bombs, I think the lists in the OP are free of that or at least lets you know when you're installing 47 anime hair mods. So I bought the game a while ago on the steam stale, was looking through my quest list, and recently realised I'd never done the DLC's (this is third playthrough, though I never finished the first due to the corrupted save gods). My god, these DLC's add so much content! I haven't brought myself to mod the game just yet, I sort of want to play the hell out of vanilla though. I still need to do a playthrough where I side with the Legion, I've done the independent Vegas, and am currently on the NCR sided playthrough. I am so so glad I discovered this game series, and the OPs have so much useful info (the anti-stutter mod has made my experience so much better!). Just need to finish Fallout 3 as well...

Most of the mods are still current it seems but the whole LOOT thing should be changed. I used these to check some mods out: http://www.reddit.com/r/fnv/comments/zs4o9/a_detailed_list_with_links_for_the_best_mods_for/ - I think this might be a bit out dated, I mostly just used it for recomendations. http://piratepad.net/ep/pad/view/ro.91p5JbgrShD/rev.4 - Only list I could find thats still being updated. It's from 4chan so be warned. New Vegas doesen't seem to have any kind of GEMS list like skyrim does sadly so you just have take these kinds of lists.

With an unfortunate caveat, you're actually not very close to the mark. The person that created Willow did it because they were annoyed by the personality-less, sometimes mute companions created by Nexus users. So he created Willow and now she has unique items and voice acting and a backstory and all kinds of crap that's cool and unusual for your standard Nexus companion mod. People complained about her being too pretty so he added a lore-friendly version which is odd but alright. Then he added a romance sidequest that ends with Willow doing the sex with you after a striptease and it's like dude come on. edit: Uh, girl, rather. One important rule when modding these games (New Vegas, Skyrim) is that all companion and quest mods are utter garbage. Even the best one is worse than the worst quest. So far the only exception to this rule is Nehrim and they made an entire game out of it somehow.

The Willow mod is actually extremely well done from a technical standpoint, it's the content itself that is questionable. The mod author is also the voice actress, and used good quality equipment to record her lines; she just sounds like a bubbly 16 year old girl. The quests all work properly without serious bugs, but involve things like recovering a lost teddy bear or collecting pencils. Looking at the nexus page, a lot has been added to it since I played it a couple years ago, and while lore friendly and non-nude options are a welcome addition, player homes and extra armors starts to smell of feature creep.

Perhaps I should have used the term "well crafted." If you are looking for a virtual girlfriend to follow you around the Mojave singing to herself and occasionally stripping for you, then the Willow mod is head and shoulders better than the competition. If that's not what you want, don't include it in your load order. I've fiddled with the GECK enough that I can tell that a lot of time and care went into making that mod. I still think it's a turd, but it's without a doubt the most highly polished turd on the nexus. I give it credit for effort, if nothing else. I'm a sucker for quest mods, I'll admit. While there's nothing in the vein of Falskaar or Wyrmstooth, I enjoy stuff by Someguy and Puce Moose generally, and I'm interested in how Project Brazil is going to turn out (if it ever releases fully). Alton, IL for Fallout 3 is kind of neat, too, and TTW-compatible apparently. I can appreciate the effort some of the modders put in, even if they don't always have the most professional voice acting, since they are amateurs. However, I would never recommend them for a first playthrough, because they kill game balance, even if game balance is already dubiously fragile. Avoid Beyond Boulder Dome and AWOP though, they are rancid poo poo. I can appreciate what AWOP tries to be, but it's so bloated at this point that it's just not worth it. It's a mod that would work better with Fallout 3 (and I know there is a Fallout 3 version of it). Edit: Also Willow is a pretty well-made companion mod, though it's very bloated and unbalancing at this point (she gives you a perk that's basically Pack Rat, and I think it also stacks with it as well.). Russell's pretty decent too from what I heard. I generally don't go for companion mods, since I rarely use companions and I'm generally satisfied with the ones NV already has. Puce Moose is probably the best to go for if you don't want gaudy pop culture ripoffs or sudden inclusion of non-standard pornographic material. That said, Someguy has gotten better over time and New Vegas Bounties is hardly worse than what Fallout 2 had...

I burned through NV a couple of years ago, so I'm playing it carefully now and of course spending more time loving with mods than it would take me to complete the game. Basically focusing on appearance now, so I've got NMC+Old Bueno, weapon/clothes bouncing between Project Reality (great but NPC's tend to get ghost-face with this mod in the open) and Nevada Skies, etc. One small graphical aspect though really stands out which I haven't found a texture replacement for - the hands. Everything looks great but you have the lowest res texture staring right at you constantly, I haven't found any replacement for the hands (with or without armour gloves) - is there one?
