If they release it in Spain I'd unironically buy a green one because of nostalgia and hell, that flashlight on top of the phone looks drat useful. I could even put my Galaxy S to rest as alarm clock and use it as mp3 player.

Quit signing contracts. Get out from under AT&T's thumb and buy whatever phone you want. How much mobile data do you ACTUALLY use.

3 - 4 GB a month. Long bus commute with no WiFi. I don't think I've ever bought a phone off-contract / non-carrier. Is there an IYG thread I can read?

You still might be better off with a NEXT plan with AT&T, they are really working hard to gently caress over their unlimited data customers, and if you're not already getting throttled, you probably will be.

Or comedy "pick up a 635" option.

He is replacing a 920, which is/was actually a really really nice phone. If the software stack was where it is at now when the 920 came out I think Nokia would have had a huge hit on its hands. Even now a lot of the lineup is a clear step down. Making the suggestion comical in a sort of sad way~~

While it would be nice to go back to windows phone the main thing that is keeping me away from it is actually the music app. I was fine with everything else as I am currently using my android phone for mostly social media things (including snapchat :argh: ) and music but I disliked it on windows phone. Even Spotify felt wrong on it but that just boiled down to no developer giving a poo poo about WP! Everything else I loved, including Cortana and the fact that it could read out texts whilst I was driving.

How is the 930? I never used the QI thing on the 920 but I liked glimpse and its a feature I actually miss from WP. Is it a worthy successor to the 920 or is it more so-so?

Regarding the alternative music apps I still have my 920 so I may just fire it up again just to dick around with and see what denim is like whenever they feel like updating that!

Edited because apparently the 930 does have QI charging? I didn't know that, and I don't know why I thought it didn't.

Cost-cutting, for Glance you need a display that supports panel self-refresh. They've taken a lot of flak for that, so I hope that they won't make the same mistake twice, at least with the high-end handsets.

Being a lazy butt and not wanting to double-tap to wake or press the home button. :v: It's handy when I just pull my phone out of my jacket pocket, can glance at the time, and then get to shove my hand back into my pocket. I do have the glance background app installed so it's not just the time, date, and notifications.

The first release could barely do more than display the time, but the current release is more customizable. Handy to check if there's been any new messages.

As for the battery power consumption, it's insignificant, on the order of 1-2 percentage points per day for OLED screens if you keep it on 24/7. It also uses the proximity sensor to turn off the screen if it determines the phone is in your pocket or a bag.

I've run into some weirdness with my 1520. Apparently it's been pocket dialing people but the calls aren't showing up in my call log, but it's also picking up calls while it's in my pocket and I know the screen is locked.

It's in a Belkin case with a flip cover so it's not like the screen is exposed to anything when it's doing this. Is it just a fluke thing or could something actually be wrong with it?

Glance is awesome and it was enough to make me hold off on wanting to pull the trigger on an RM-1045 (unlocked 930) for $385 to be used on AT&T. However I had an epiphany, my MS band provides the same service as glance while sitting on my wrist, so I went ahead and placed the order. I'm told that all I'll be missing is LTE, and since I spend a bunch of time on fast 4G anyway I'm thinking I won't miss it. Visual voicemail, tethering, and MMS are all supposed to work, I'll report back.

Edit: It looks like I'm not the only one, stumbled across this when looking up what speeds I'd be expecting.

Love it, wife has one too. I don't mind the size, I wear it display side down and like my wedding ring its just faded into the back of my mind now. I only notice it's there when I hit it against something or think about it. I can understand why some wouldn't like it though, I'm guessing regular watch wearers may not mind so much. The excercise stuff is cool and it's actually motivated me to sleep better after I saw how poor my sleep habits were. There are some cool WP apps out now (linked below) that let you add custom wallpapers or access sensors that aren't available in the health app, like your external skin temperature. I don't know why I need that but it's cool!

https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/band-sensor-monitor/68f97b41-de2f-4579-a473-5d476a5c5196
https://www.windowsphone.com/en-us/store/app/pimp-my-band/9966b6e7-bb20-4b53-9b3c-8701a271c66c

I have to say though that my favorite unexpected feature is I can be driving in the car with my stereo blaring at top volume and still set reminders or give music commands to my wrist and it gets the text right every time. It must have a good MIC on it with limited range to filter out noise, and it doesn't stop/interrupt the song either which was previously mildly annoying. It's why I don't have texts auto-read to me in my car because then the music just cuts out all the time.

So this:
*music playing* *push head unit button* *call cortana* *voice commands* *cortana acknowledgement* *music returns*

Went to this:
*music keeps playing while I give commands to wrist like James Bond nerd, and cortana silenty obeys*

This is evolution. Also coincidentally both the health app and band just received updates today, nothing major though it seems.

That's why I bought the 521 for my mom. See almost exclusively uses it as a feature phone. I don't think she's even used the camera, which I thought would be a selling point. The other point was the price. I wanted to see if she'd be okay using a touchscreen/smartphone before dropping more than $100 on a phone for her. She's happy for now, but if she wanted to get a data plan and do more internet stuff, I'd have to let her play with my Android and get some input to see what exactly her needs are.

EDIT: Maybe she'd want to start Snapchatting with my sister!

A few of my friends asked if I would recommend WP, but the best I could give them was hemming and hawing. Yes it's a great phone, the OS is pretty great (as long as you're running dev preview), but if you want to do anything other than call/text/web browse you have to wade through the app store which is filled with crap to find relatively few (if any) apps that do what you want.

I prefer using windows phone - I have a 930, and before that a 920. Before the 920 I had a galaxy nexus. My dad who gets each phone when I'm done with them also prefers the 920 to the nexus, and the 3GS he had before it.

I don't have a social media presence though, I seldom play phone games, and I'm not one for a bazillion apps. The phone pretty much does everything I need out of the box - all I've added are a weather app that uses a more accurate data source for Australian forecasts; the SA app; kindle; IMDB and wikipedia apps, and the apps for my bank, and preferred airline. The later two are better than they are on other platforms - lots of care and thought went into them.

Verizon flat out told me a replacement 928 would be impossible to order. Its all bullshit. I have used all platforms and really do enjoy using my Lumia the most. For me it is the fluidity of the OS, and the seamless transitions between most app ux. The app synching in IE and the other Microsoft services is getting really good now. I am at a point in life in my late 20s where I have grown out of wanting the bleeding edge nightly, and just want something that works. Same thing with apps. I just don't have time with job and family to keep up anymore. I feel so old writing that.

So I really hope Windows Phone 10, or whatever they call it keeps what I like and the unified Windows/Xbox stores attract developers. If anything for just the numbers of eyes that look at Windows and in the future Xbox every drat day.

Too late, I'm afraid - what drove Windows Phone sales in my corner of Europe was enterprise market and those people do not really buy apps and certainly don't care for Snapchat etc which are essential for under 30s. Now that iOS has Office and it's something that's superior to Windows Phone offering, it killed higher end enterprise too. For enterprises where costs are issue, Windows Phone are still seeing some traction but Android is eating that too. When Office for Android is released, it's game over there too.

Xbox One won't attract any developers as PS4 has huge lead in Europe due to staggered release of Xbox that gave Sony year-long head start. They don't even mention apps in Xbox marketing at all anymore.

Combined with Nokia loving up their flagship product pipeline, Windows Phone is effectively dead in North Europe and only thing that even get to operators sales charts are Lumia 5xx and 6xx. I feel really bad for all my former Nokia colleagues, but I expect MS will shut down ex-Nokia division during next two years. Then again, they've seen it coming for a while now and as it is Nokia is losing talent fast.

Cybernetic Vermin
Apr 18, 2005

On a side note: I found it very confusing when Nokia sold to Microsoft at a time when it seemed like things were actually running smoothly (i.e. sales were decent and the product lineup seemed quite strong at the time, momentum seemed to be with them), but most likely the high-end hiccup we are currently seeing was already becoming visible to Nokia management at the time, and they did not feel that they could make it through this stretch.

Still annoying and a bit sad.

Yeah, I have recommended the things I like about the phone before, but there's always a massive "but..." after them. And the "but..." keeps getting larger, while the list of things I like only grows a little with infrequent updates, and sometimes gets smaller in the case of things like Music.
