So is Legendary Encounters worth it? I was checking it out and it seems pretty neat. But since it's a deck builder, card sleeves are pretty much required. Even the reviews say as much. Is it worth around $85 for the game and sleeves? I've played Legendary, but do not own it. The option to mix the two together for added replay isn't really an option. Unless I bought Legendary as well. I doubt I'll be buying Legendary though. While it's not a bad game, I just don't feel like a superhero fighting villains. I much prefer Sentinels for that, even if the art isn't as pretty. Although, at least the art isn't repeated over and over and over. That was another issue I had with Legendary. They have decades of art to pull from and yet they repeat the same images. Other than that, it's pretty decent. I usually think of myself as a Shield agent directing a group of heroes to fight for me, considering you start with only Shield agents and work your way up. Actually that's why Fury is my pick when we're selecting decks. Anyway, from what I've seen, the Alien theme meshes better in the Encounters game. You actually feel like the Aliens are after you. You also work as a team with cooperative actions, instead of just doing your own thing. Only thing stopping your teamwork is the hidden agendas and someone dying to a Facehugger and being an Alien player. Well..that or you all dying horribly. Either way, sounds like good times. Of course I haven't played it. So how far off am I? Is it really just terrible and all hype? Already asking around with my gaming group to see if they want to play it, but thought I'd ask here for hopefully opinions of people that have played it already. Thanks.

He simply accrues licenses and sells other people's games while being the worst PR guy ever. Don Eskridge is the designer of The Resistance and all followups. He's actually a really down-to-earth dude who initially released The Resistance for free on BGG before being basically C&Ded by his own publisher-to-be. HI&HA stands for Hostile Intent and Hidden Agenda, 2 new expansions for The Resistance that backport Avalon's additions while also including 7 (!!) other variants, powers, and character concepts that are interchangeable with the existing game. It is essentially Resistance 3 to Avalon's Resistance 2, although I've been using the term "Resistance+" to refer to any mishmash of modules while sussing out which ones are worthwhile. Travis is a gigantic shithead. He uses Kickstarter as a personal preorder accumulation site, with each campaign raking in anywhere from $30,000 to $260,000 and his games being available even at mass-market retailers like Target. Essentially, he is The Man that KS is designed to circumvent and has sufficiently poisoned the well enough that many prospective game buyers refuse to donate to game KSes. I brought this up because the guy is rolling in dough, shouldn't need any more startup capital, and his other questionable business practices cause me to wonder how well he is treating his designers.

Having received the latest Sentinels expansion today, Wrath of the Cosmos, I'd just like to clear up a popular misconception: A number of people here seem to believe that Adam Rebottaro, the artist for Greater Than Games, is incompetent and his (supposedly) lovely art is because he is not capable of doing better. (Personally, I like the art in Sentinels and think it's perfectly appropriate for the subject matter, but YMMV.) However, this expansion contains an environment deck called the Enclave of the Endlings and the art on this deck, still by Rebottaro, is as far as I can tell a spot-on emulation of Jack Kirby's art on various cosmic Marvel titles. So the style he normally uses on their games is clearly a deliberate choice.

I noticed no one in the bgg guild has Shadowrun Crossfire, so I decided I'd get it and try it out. Seems pretty popular with people who like hard as hell co-op games. I have experienced the LOTRening and Death Angel, so I'm prepared to get my face smashed in and enjoy it. For some reason I have an easier time getting people to play milquetoast deckbuilders than any of the other stuff I have right now so there's that, too. Also, Legendary Encounters guy, we're getting that too so I'll report back when I finally play it. edit: quote:Having received the latest Sentinels expansion today, Wrath of the Cosmos, I'd just like to clear up a popular misconception: A number of people here seem to believe that Adam Rebottaro, the artist for Greater Than Games, is incompetent and his (supposedly) lovely art is because he is not capable of doing better. I also don't think his pencils are colored the way modern comics are. Not my thing but I don't think it's due to lack of talent, more a matter of taste. His art looks more like super hero saturday morning cartoons than superhero comics. fozzy fosbourne fucked around with this message at 04:35 on Jan 7, 2015 |

A few pages back now, This is my dominion box. It's the thing from hobby lobby that someone made a storage solution for, but I didnt bother with their solution. The tray is Race for the Galaxy+alien Artifacts, Love Letter, and Agricola All Creatures Great and Small. The action board for agricola, rule books for it and race fit just under the tray. The bottom row is dominion. Each set of 10 cards and 1 randomizer is sleeved together with the backs out and I have two rows of these cards, with a little room to spare. We just pluck them out at random and put them back in at random. There's a little space in the top row and in the middle that you can't really see where I put all the other cards such as victory, gold, various cards that depend on the random you get (mostly dark ages stuff) and a sleeve of two of each Kingdom Victory card so they can't be identified by thickness. If needed I can fit 7 wonders in here somwhow in lieue of another game or some random dominion cards.

It helps to know what cribbage hands are the 'best' - the highest scoring cribbage hands are the likes of 5-5-5-5-10, 6-7-7-8-8, etc) bobvonunheil fucked around with this message at 06:34 on Jan 7, 2015 |

It's not an ideal system right now because my sleeves are lovely and even 11 cards slide right out if I'm not careful, but you can organize it however you want within the box. My solution does lead to things bouncing around a bit and if it wears any cards noticeably I might have to do something about it, even if its just sticking a thing of foam down either side to make it flush. This is everything but alchemy because gently caress potions and gently caress alchemy. This is the top tray: Those are each of the agricola more buildings expansions in the left and right bins. I'm thinking if I can fit the cards somewhere I can fit all the little tokens for 7W in that middle bin but that might be crazy. Here is the main box sans the larger flat bits covering everything: You'll notice an extra shiney chunk of cards towards the top right, thats where the kingdom cards stop and ruins and curses and poo poo begin. Here you can see copper which didn't fit and spare cards just under those trays. And finally here you can see how with some pretty basic woodworking you could make room for third row of cards and then have room for dividers and things. Edit- Ow my tables. The art is better on the Polish for sure, but I want to say that the colors/room types are a lot more vibrant on the US version, so that it's easier to tell at a glance what some rooms are. That being said, I'd still get this version. Why do different countries get different art, though? That seems weird, unless it's a different publisher altogether that has higher/different standards. I would imagine that that would be a not inconsiderable cost, too.

Boardgame night trip report, this time it was Kemet and more Kemet. Thanks to helpful boardgame goon HOOLY BOOLY I educated myself on the rules beforehand with Watch It Played's video series and also made two additional Esoteric Order of Gamers rule summary/card & tile chart booklets to pass around the table and took my recently purchased copy of Kemet to Tuesday night gaming at Dangerous Gentlemen in Longview. We played two games, a 2 player with me against the store owner and a 4 player game with the two of us and two other players, none of which had ever played Kemet before. I lost both games and had a great time, and reactions seemed highly positive all around with a lot of praise for how smoothly it plays and the amount of depth. The first game (the 1v1) I decided to try a strong and aggressive red focused approach and had fun rampaging around with the giant scorpion but lack of prayer economy hamstrung me and the win went to Trent (the owner) by Day Phase 4, though it was neck and neck for a while. That was another thing that received some compliments was the ebb and flow of victory points that could have one player with 7 and one player with 3 and end up with both of them at, say, 5 apiece when the Day ended. The four player game I spent more focus on a mix of tiles, dipping into red for teleport abilities and blue for some defense but I was more experimenting than focusing on a clearly defined strategy and so I didn't really accomplish as much as I'd hoped. Everybody bought creatures (prompted by me immediately going for the Ancestral Elephant mainly as a way of showing them "hey, there are creatures") and the bulk of the game seemed to center around the two temples in the middle of the map changing hands nearly every turn. In the end Trent slowly wound up accumulating more temporary points than the rest of us via building his pyramids up, took some battles, and then managed to capture two temples at the end of the Day phase. I could have stopped him...but I had inadvertently used both of my movement actions already and had no way to attack his army, wah wahhhh. I'm absolutely pleased with this game and I think (hope) that it's going to be a part of the rotation going forward. It took us a while to get two games finished for various reasons, people spending time reading over tile abilities and Trent having to leave the table to help customers, but even the four player game seemed to go smoothly with turns moving around the board quickly and with a minimum of "oh wait, poo poo, I forgot." Definitely a lot of fun, and by the end there were still plenty of tiles that nobody had tried yet and things left to experiment with (nobody in either game tried attacking other players' cities, and after pyramid victory points helped buoy Trent into winning that second game I'm considering looking into that the next time I play). All in all I'd say this was a solid recommendation and I'm looking forward to getting my money's worth out of it.

So what is a general strategy for Cyclades? I played it for the first time tonight, 3 players, and spent most of the game penned on a single island, unable to do much but get forced out of bids for the gods and stuck on Apollo-ing my little island, occasionally getting Poseidon and throwing money around to blow up everyone's boats in a fit of pique. On the last turn of the game, while both other players fought over Athena to finish their final Metropolis, I accidently mislead them into thinking I didn't have much gold, got Ares, and deployed a doomstack through my haphazard blob of ships which by sheer coincidence () had ended up bridging my one island to both of their Metropoleis and snuck a win. I still felt like poo poo because I had pretty much been unable to do anything for most of the game. Also: For teaching new people Dominion (base set only), should I stick to the reccomended bank in the rulebook, or is there a better suggested one?

Fat Samurai posted:Small steps, small steps... That really is the key when playing modern board games with the older generation. I think the other thing is not to rapidly introduce new or more complex games, but instead let them get used to one game at a time. Yeah okay, you might end up playing nothing but Catan for a while, but once they know all it's rules and mechanics off by heart it'll be lot easier for the next step because the foundations are already there. Edit: Speaking of Catan, I played it last night and something came up which I wasn't sure about. Situation: Red and Blue have built roads than converge on an open building space. Red builds a Settlement. Can Blue then build a road on the other side of Red's settlement, or does the Red settlement effectively end the Blue road?
