It was quite literally their final fantasy, until it blew up and they got the chance to have more. They're just naming them all that now because who knows, the next one might very well be the final one, better safe than sorry.

Sakaguchi has said it was because he was planning on it being his final game, before he'd go back to college. Uematsu says it was that old "Square was at risk of bankruptcy, and it might be their last game" story.

That Final Fantasy hunting game is apparently getting bashed in Amazon reviews for (amongst other things) having a 9 hour single-player campaign, though supposedly the game only starts properly then, and making you lose AP (which you need for skills) while running. But hey, at least its not HP.

Final Fantasy 13 is simply one of the most tedious games I have played in recent memory. Multiple pain in the rear end boss fights one after another with hardly a break inbetween. Not only that enemies are tedious to fight making leveling an ordeal instead of quick. And I keep getting harassed by the pope.
