I guess not though, since the same thing happened when I saw ASAP Rocky and Pusha T at the Best Buy theatre, I think I brought 40% of the black crowd. We were on line talking about some of Pusha's Clipse performances in NYC and we got "who is Clipse?" :rolleye:

Pretty sure he was just saying that he digs the jazz influence. There's no jazz song sample (at least, as far as I can tell  ) Either way, gotta agree with everyone. This poo poo is solid.

I'm still undecided between PRhyme and Kendrick/Q, based on the feedback. Tempted to try doing both concerts, but the fest gives no clue as to when anyone is performing and the shows are a good distance away from each other. I'll be spoiled either way, I just want to have the hypest day possible.

Gambino's Kauai/Stn Mtn joint mixtapes were the best new rap music of the year. If his rap name was Donald Glover and his would-be audience wasn't a bunch of in the closet pitchfork followers he wouldn't catch all the flak that he does.

I still can't see why some dudes can't accept this. Dude's production has gotten better for sure (and some of his more singing songs were actually pretty nice on because the internet), but even when he's competent w/r/t rapping ability or w/e, his actual rhymes and what he says is just typically horrible. He was inoffensively bland when he first started (and was pretty much a Lil Wayne cover act, but still), but I guess he thought that plus his being a tv show writer entitled him to automatic rap fame and started trying to be the whiniest dude in rap (even worse than Wale post-major release/pre MMG). Danny Swain (Danny!) is like the same dude only better in pretty much every way, but since he didn't play a cornball brother on TV he doesn't get all the fame/notice.

Still trying to catch up on stuff from last year, Lil Herb's album is something I'll have to listen to more since I kinda wrote it off before. Same with Common's album-both have sounded pretty decent from what I've listened to recently. I think a few people (including myself) have mentioned it, but 2014 is showing up to be a much better year for rap than I think most dudes realize. There just wasn't the super-huge GKMC/Yeesus mainstream event thing (which is part of the reason I think RTJ2 got so much acclaim-not that it was bad per se, but it was something substantive and semi-"event" worthy for the music press when typically something mainstream would've been there). I'll also check out that Mick Jenkins again, although it didn't really grab me before and that is typically my stuff. (edit-maybe I'm just in a good mood/really loving rap now but upon further listen this is a great album. sounds like the type of music the Roots should've made instead of whatever they decided to do after things fall apart).

Also I've listened to the Rich Gang tape more, and I'm definitely liking it better. Even have to admit I may have been a little harsh in my assessment of Rich Homie Quan. Still think I prefer RNT, but I can see how dudes would've dug it much more. As an aside, a lot of my change in opinion is definitely due to the how/where I listen to music typically-usually at work or just at home. Which more party/club music isn't always the best setting for. But when you're out doing poo poo, it's awesome to have on (or when trying to get hype before/stay hype after doing poo poo).

Well that's a lot of words, but yeah.

I get the criticisms on Gambino but there's a double standard there that he doesn't deserve. He's improved a lot and I don't think the lyrics on his newest project are cornball at all. On the other hand his flows and his style are pretty derivative but the songs just sound good to me.

It's just so weird to me that the hate comes from people too cool to admit to being part of the pitchfork herd while the dismissal of him is pretty uniquely mindless. Doesn't add up in my mind.

I don't really have the same taste as this thread though so whatever.

Well, I don't have anywhere near the core taste of this thread either. I've also never read Pitchfork beyond seeing links occasionally from here.

But it's also trivially easy looking through Gambino's lyrics on rapgenius and comparing them to other rappers. His writing is boring and derivative. His lyricism is boring (though I'm pleasantly surprised by his singing). His production is pretty good.

I never even said cornball; the lyrics on the song you played weren't cornball, they were boring. They're a generic mashup of other rappers:

quote:

Young Bino in the house like an B&E
Why I'm looking so fly
I'm just being me
Moved up, weed
In my girl clutch
Come on, really? This is the kind of poo poo I expect to hear from a highschool rapper.

quote:

I'm the new Jay-Z
I ain't write poo poo down
I'mma steal that crown
I'mma do that thing
Girl you sweeter than mango
How we cool and confident
With hair like Django
sigh

Now, according to rapgenius, the song you posted is a remake of one from his first mixtape, but it holds for his other tracks too.

Look I'm not gonna hate on anybody too much for enjoying him--if you're just looking for catchy mindless hiphop with decent production, you could do a lot worse, and I like a lot of stuff that the general consensus of this thread greatly dislikes.

But let's not pretend his raps are clever.

The man is an amazing creative force. To me, he's more than just an R&B hero. D is a drat rock star, or at least he should've been- if he started his career in the 60's, he would've been just as important as anyone else in soul/funk/rock music.. And he's got some of the best live performance footage I've ever seen, from Voodoo-era concerts at Montreaux with the Soulquarians, to Bonnaroo last year covering Sly, Funkadelic, and the Beatles. It's too bad he's not been more prolific, but unfortunately he's got a lot of well documented personal issues.
