Sometimes it gets too cold to breathe through their sensitive noses, so they use their furry tails to warm the air up as they breathe with their mouths. Supposedly. Heard that secondhand, so I have no idea and can't find any credible source backing it up.

They use their tail like a blanket, so the bits that aren't as covered in fur as everything else can stay warm. And that is cute as hell.

I don't know about snow leopards, but most of the cats I've owned honestly seem to forget their tail is actually part of their body sometimes then usually do something like bite it or lick it.

When my cat was a kitten, she used to chase her tail so much that I teased her that she wouldn't know what to do with it if she caught it. One day she did, and the sight of a cat with her own tail in her mouth looking utterly surprised is hilarious.

Well I can testify that I do the same thing with my woolly scarf when it gets really cold, so this sounds like a feasible theory to me.
On the other hand none of those pictures look like it's cold at all, but maybe they still do it on instinct?
Or maybe they really are just doing it for giggles because hey, ploofy tail.
