I believe the official stance is that it's canon unless anything in one of Valve's own games contradicts it. So stuff like Race X is totally out but Barney exists and presumably did at least some of the stuff he did in Blue Shift. And Adrian might exist but is totally irrelevant.

Opposing Force is basically irrelevant since it ends with Shepard getting put in perma stasis. None of the aliens from it show up in Half-Life 2, but then a bunch of aliens from Half-Life 1 don't show up either. I miss houndeyes.
