I should also note: both "Doonesbury" and "Broom Hilda" began the same year: 1970. So take that for what you will.

So, by newspaper standards it's not -that- old.

Honestly, copy-pasting aside, I really like this. Amidst a sea of "But what do other cartoonists think?" reporting, Daryl Cagle is just kind of haunted by the whole incident. He doesn't need to reaffirm his appreciation for free speech because we know goddamn well that he likes it.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, I dunno.

Yeah it was posted, and I don't really like that they use "The world" there, since it implies that muslims are not part of the world.

Additionally, from looking at papers and news all over, it seems people are trying very hard to get the distinction between Islamic extremists and regular muslims out. It's a shame that this is a distinction that has to be pointed out, but it seems a lot of media, and people, are at least trying.

Yeah, it really is AGC. Terrorists want to increase tensions, responsible ("PC") people don't want to assist them by acting as their loudspeakers. We must react to jihadist fucktards who go on murdering people around the globe, obviously, but that doesn't mean that we should start new pogroms.

The red of that flag represents the blood spilled during the revolution right? I can't tell if he knew that or didn't know that when he drew this. I mean, if he did, it matches what a (deeply prejudiced) French guy told me about what he believes with be an Islamic overthrow of the government.

Yeah, probably so. The Frenchman I mentioned before thought the same way, but to me it's a failure of the government to stand up and say that it is ok to be both Muslim and French. And I guess they're moving further and further away from saying that every day.

It's not saying "Racism and prejudice are driving minority Muslims to lash out and join radical movements" it's saying "Muslims can't assimilate with the civilized world and Muslims are threats to society"

Ramirez is definitely saying "kick out/fear the Muslims," not the more accurate and more nuanced opinion of "France is rejecting their assimilation through prejudice and stupid policies."

If there's one thing the internet taught me, it's that it's actually a pretty small world.

I drew a ton of lovely stuff back then. I pretty much threw away all of it since then. Lately I've been doing some freelance work for a comic book based on a popular TV cartoon, so I managed to move up, at least.
