Tough to tell how it'll be overall but I felt the first episode was a pretty solid way to start things off.

Pretty visuals, some interesting thematic hooks, limited characterisation. The fanservice may serve an artistic purpose or it may be purely gratuitous. Kind of hard to pass judgement on that after one episode.

It feels like the first episode was intended to (kuma) shock us and get us curious about what is to come.
I dunno, Ikuhara is an intriguing director, but he's not solid gold; we'll just have to see if he's going to go anywhere with this that I'll find interesting.

This show is just about the anime titties and fanservice, guys. Huh, lesbian empowerment? Revolutionizing the yuri genre? Don't give me that, the women in the show are just objects for creepy men. No one but them could possibly enjoy this show. Furthermore, I can't imagine why Morishima Akiko, a lesbian who has made yuri manga her life, would ever sign up for this project except to sell her soul to pedophiles in Akiba.

But seriously, can you guys stop projecting your insecurities?
The manga seems to be Morishima's deal and it's pretty distinct from the anime. I get the impression that w/the manga she's just doing her thing and then the anime is lifting her character designs and some themes and doing something else with them. I ran across a quote from an interview that said Ikuhara decided not to try and make the manga and anime be consistent with each other so he could achieve his goals with the anime.

That or the manga is going to get uncomfortably rapey in future chapters and I'll be really sad. But so far it's totally consistent with her other work.

On the other hand, she's only listed as the artist and Ikuhara is still credited as the author. There's also some synchronicity that seems pretty unusual if it's just thematic similarities plus similar characters.

Is there more than 2 chapters scanned and translated anywhere? The ones on dynastyscans haven't updated in since March.

I just have an issue with egregious use of words like 'fanservice' and 'pandering' in stigmatizing connotations as if there's some objectively right or wrong way to write sexuality.

People use those terms with those connotations mostly from the view as a consumer of media, i.e. in feeling like you're being served an inferior product that covers its own shortcomings via "sex sells". Or in recognition that yes, they have to pander to a money-spending demographic to be successful.

Or at least that's what I want to believe, lol if anyone thinks fanservice is actually a commentary on sexuality or some poo poo.

So, I will not pretend to understand all the imagery and associations attempted by this guy Ikuhara for this show. In fact, I will admit I watched Penguin Drum and didn't know anything about Ikuhara until you all started chatting about him with such vigor in anticipation for this show.

However, I do want to say outright that the whole idea of bears attacking humanity and being a real "threat" seems a little far fetched. In the USA alone, there are somewhat under 330,000 bears. For ease of calculations, which will soon become apparent, let's assume 320,000 bears total in the USA. The people-population is 320,000,000.

That's a thousand people in the USA per bear -- assuming the humans are all adults -- which they're not. Assuming half the humans are adults, that's still 500 people per bear. Considering the number of armed citizens, etc. in the USA, I hardly consider 1 bear per 500 people a significant threat to humanity.

This situation is worse in Japan. The short story is that there are 10,000 people per bear in Japan. This situation hardly seems dire, I really can't imagine the need for building some massive wall to keep the minuscule Japanese bear population from endangering the people.

Assuming, therefore, that bears aren't really what's the danger, then... I'm not sure.

I will say that there seems to be a lot of construction going on in the skyline/background. I wonder what the imagery for that is supposed to suggest? If I were to guess, and that's what I'm doing now, I'd say all the cranes and such indicating massive construction are representing some kind of parallel intent-creation that Ikuhara is trying to represent. I wonder if the buildings will begin to become more finished as the story goes along? It would be interesting to see.

That one's easy - this is a society that's constantly building walls, literally and metaphorically. Those looming, ever-rising megastructures give the world an oppressive, claustrophobic edge. despite its bright, cheery surface.

yeah that's about how i feel on the show. it's cool and has good production values, it's got some titillating imagery and themes. it's definitely unique if nothing else. i am a big fan of utena and enjoyed digging around its themes, but i think people are freaking the gently caress out over a lot of what's been shown so far (1 episode) and assuming the worst.

I don't really give a poo poo about the nipple-less nudity or the metaphorical stamin-licking or the scenes where one girl pushes another one down and wedges her knee between the other girl's legs, but the plot seems really boring. I know it's like two episodes in and not really fair to judge but it's just not interesting to me at all. So far it's just beargirls with yuri in their names who want to either gently caress or kill (or both) non-bear girls without yuri in their name, and then a nonsensical court scene happens that has no real relevance.

Wait, so the president is also a bear, and ate Sumika? That doesn't fit in the slightest with most of the scenes we saw from her perspective this episode. The obvious explanation is a kill-and-replace, but I cannot for the life of me figure out when the switch might have happened. Manchurian Kumandidate, maybe?

And yeah, if you have a low tolerance for sketchy fanservice, this probably ain't the show for you.
