We can assume that's a diesel, so no CAT in the way. Still seems unlikely though.

It's obviously a catastrophic internal failure of a common turbuffler.

That actually held up amazingly better than I imagined a Paseo would with that kind of hit.

Linedance posted:I can buy it. Not sure if that's a muffler or a resonator, but either way, depending on the internal structure of baffles and packing, once it catches and starts to dig, it'll just saw its way through until it's expended enough energy . It sure looks like the outer parts of the turbine wheel are intact to me. That wheel won't fit out of the hot side housing unless those blades got worn down to the point that they are the same diameter all the way to the back plate. That's discounting the fact that the edges look like someone did that with a pair of wire cutters, then stuck the wheel in there for a lark Also, that's definitely a muffler, thus the crimped edges (spamcan construction) instead of cat style construction... which is how DPFs (diesel particulate filters) are put together as well typically. Hell, I looked up the clearly visible part number on the side and it is the muffler for a fairly recent dodge fullsize truck, don't know why I didn't think of that in the first place. As for "dig until it expends enough energy" I have nothing but handwavey experience to argue against that, but no way would it dig that far even if it hadn't had to rattle down 4 feet of downpipe and halfway through a muffler and maybe a DPF after finding its way out of the hot side of the turbo. I've had a turbo with a blown bearing have its turbine wheel hit the housing, it stopped spinning faster than I could blink and there isn't even all that much scarring on the housing, quite honestly. So yeah, I don't believe it. Wish I got a picture of the awful poo poo I just saw... but I forgot. Some guy with a pair of 4 or 5 inch hex nuts hanging from his trailer hitch by a piece of chain. Truck nuts, get it? huhuhuhuhuhuhhhh

Well a turbine wouldn't make it past a cat or very far through a muffler, but here's one that managed to escape: And another one that was still stuck in the housing:

The only turbines I'm familiar with are the aircraft variety, which will chew through anything, but then again have a shitload more mass and momentum. drat u physics!!

I was just reading this article about Toyota trucks and I just read that they were getting 109hp out of a 2.0 liter engine in 1973. I don't know if that's SAE Net or whatever it's supposed to be these days, but seriously, VW still gets 115 out of their 2.0. Ford gets 160 in the Focus. I mean it's not like VW just can't build powerful engines, their shiny new 1.8T was a hoot in the new Jetta. I have low standards, but seriously, why? somebody pointed out the last time it came up, that VW 2.0 is fuckin near out of the same era. 160hp is nearly 150% of 109hp, about where other engines have improved since 1973.

It's hilarious to just burn off from a standstill when the light turns green and everyone is slipping and sliding while my proper tires just hook up and go. We have pretty mild winters here, but I've already noticed that my all season Ohtsus are hilarious when it's cold. The roads can be perfectly dry, but if it's below freezing, I can do sick 1 wheel burnouts by just sneezing on the throttle in 1st. ... in a 2800 pound car with 140 hp. They actually handle fine, even on days like today (nonstop rain, just above freezing) during cornering and regular driving, but I had to really feather the clutch when taking off from a stop all day today.

That's a funny looking Commodore. I know it's not but it's all I could think. I saw something a couple of months back that surprised me. It was a maybe '90s or '00s Volvo wagon. It may or may not have been intentionally lowered. It was crabbing along down the street. Was not expecting that from a Volvo.
