heh.
looks like 250V was too low a voltage to run 100W into a long wire with the tuner -- gonna try to upgrade the GDT to 350V next time i have the chassis open

could actually hear a clicking sound when it discharged, then the SWR protection would reduce power, since the tube would stop conducting the power would rise up to the threshold again and click

gonna have to buy some interface cables and a copy of ham radio deluxe next month to run digimodes

Panasonic shortwave radios are really highly regarded and i'd like to pick one up some day.

RF-2200

here it is with the matching antenna tuner :O

RF-2800 - very popular

Can't even read this. Don't need to.

RF-2900 was more desktoppy, between a regular desktop receiver and clock radio size?

then the big desktop radios, RF-4800/4900 (cosmetic diffs):

The RF-6300L had incredible 80's styling and that "big square radio with a big handle" look in vogue at the time. I love this one.

and then there is the monstrosity, the yacht, the moby dick. RF-9000

unghhhhhhhhh

e: oh gently caress look at this weirdo, the RF-1115. 2 cop bands and am/fm

cw is 85% receiving and 15% sending as far as effort goes

keyers are the norm, only old beardos use straight keys any more, and even then it is only on Straight Key Night

get an iambic paddle and a keyer and 70% of your timing problems will sort themselves out in a half hour. the bencher by-1 paddle or whatever is a good unit for both noobs and intermediates, and you can either buy a keyer or just program an attiny85 or something - fun side project in itself

people can traditionally send about 50% faster than they can copy. go by copy speed, spend more time on listening

really all radios should be big square things with handles on the front and a rack mount kit supplied in the box

and a huge amount of knobs and buttons to confuse the casuals, pro listeners only

one could absolutely do a hardware interface for an SDR tho

build a radio front panel with the display and a bunch of encoders and buttons

backend magic to tie it into the sdr app

it'd take Effort but it would probably be quite rewarding

does knobfeel count if you're feeling up female n connectors and amphenol panel mount usb holes???

sniped this on amazon, looks like it was a price error. no actual amphenol components are going on it (l-com instead) b/c then it would cost as much as a real shortwave receiver

there are tons of radios floating around that have like blown up PLL's and poo poo. it'd be neat to get an old TS-180 or icom 701 or whatever, rip out the broken poo poo and still utilize the front end, filters, etc. etc. and the controls. might have to rip out the displays and replace with something less snowflakey though

n connectors seem mostly the same, but 38999 or belden industrial minimum for knob feel

i also really like the amphenol ecomate connectors, i walked around fiddling with a pair for a few days at work

is this a police/emergency radio or something that transmits on multiple frequencies?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DM_DUZX29JI

longview
Dec 25, 2006

heh.
analog linked repeater network maybe?

the old norwegian system was a huge set of cross band repeaters and phone patches, all the repeaters were linked so everyone could hear everyone (could also patch in phone calls directly), tell tale sign of that system was a long SELCAL burst before activating the network and occasionally dial tones and DTMF

they're being phased out in favour of more modern solutions like DMR for cheapskates, P25 (i think) and TETRA for europe that support trunking and encryption

sounds like they have some kind of tone based system to either squelch HTs or activate repeaters and maybe FSK at the beginning of transmissions for HTs? maybe try a MDC1200 decoder to see if it picks up on the data burst

e: the norwegian system also had a 1 second 2 kHz burst every 10 seconds for as long as the network was active, presumably as a keep alive to any radio linked repeaters, made it very hard to listen to
when long chains were active there would often be two or three sets of tones slightly offset in time

I think you're slope detecting an FM signal there, does your SDR software have an NFM or NBFM option?
Can you try that and also record it see if it's any different.

if you want one exactly like that one it will need to have a bandwidth of ~25MHz, be prepared to spend a few hundred + (+++) dollars. i think something like the hackrf would be satisfactory while not being insanely expensive but the cap for price on sdrs is basically limitless. check the tuning range to make sure it can tune low enough to the frequencies on utwente websdr or get an upconverter.

heres a semi recent list of available sdr boards http://www.rtl-sdr.com/roundup-software-defined-radios/

edit: also don't expect to see the same performance out of the box, utwente guy has some front end poo poo going on ( http://wwwhome.cs.utwente.nl/~ptdeboer/ham/sdr/#may2009 ) and also iirc really good antenna positioning
