Hatsumoude, Sheep Edition A significant portion of this thread has been dedicated to the cultural significance of new year's day in Japan, so I'm going to focus on the mechanics. First: you know how they talk about crowds a lot in these games? These pictures were taken at Kanda Shrine, dubbed "The world's geekiest temple" after years of spillover from nearby Akihabara. While the line was over an hour to get through the main gate, it's not even close to the most popular shrine in Tokyo to hit up on New Year's Day--that's Meiji Shrine, which any Tokyo native will tell you to stay the hell away from between 1/1 and 1/3. I didn't go to Meiji Shrine myself on this trip (I had other things to do with my day), so I'll have to rely on GIS to show you just how disgusting that line is. It starts at the train station, and the entire path to the shrine is so thick with people that it could cause significant injury if you did anything other than shuffle along with the rest of the hundreds of thousands of people. Where I actually did end up going was Nogi Shrine near Roppongi, which came up in a search for "hatsumoude in Tokyo without the crowd". The crowd at Nogi was much, much more reasonable and I was able to get in and out of there in under an hour. The first stop on a shrine visit is the ritual cleaning, which comes with very specific instructions. Using the provided ladles, you scoop out water, wash your left land, wash your right hand, and then bring some water to your lips with your left hand and drink. There was just one problem with this: It was snowing. I'm feel like I came close to giving myself nerve damage by going through this little ritual in the freezing cold, but that's probably my Californian wussiness talking. Once you make it through the crowd, it's time to pay respects and make your wish/prayer heard. In general, the ritual goes: throw a coin in the offering box, ring the bell, bow twice, clap twice, make a silent wish/prayer, and bow again. Nogi shrine was a little weird, though - there's no offering box or bell there, so instead they just sort of laid out a white sheet for people to toss money onto. It was a little weird, to be honest. But hey, it worked. From there, it was time to go buy some charms and pull my fortune. There was about a ten-minute line for this too. As I've mentioned, the fortune-pulling process is pretty much pulling a numbered stick out of a box. This is what the box looks like up close. My fortune for the year is... Kichi, or good fortune. I'll translate this paper when I have time - I'm spending a bunch of time on the train tomorrow, so that should give me plenty of time to write all of this out. The other tradition, which isn't really tied to the new year per se but is a popular "hey, while I'm here" activity, is making and hanging an ema, in the hope that the local god will see and grant your wish. You may remember this tradition from Persona 4, since it's the fox's Social Link. When it's not the new year, shrines tend to have a specialty and their ema will reflect that. Some shrines are filled with ema from hopeful students who want to be accepted to nearby schools, some are more generically linked to harmonious family life or traffic safety, and my favorite shrine in Osaka is plastered with the hopes and dreams of Hanshin Tigers fans. New Year's ema tend to be much more general as people write out their prayers for the coming year. Unless you're in Kanda Shrine, where the ema have become as much of an attraction as the shrine itself, due to the pilgrimages of countless otaku from nearby Akihabara. But that's neither here nor there - these images came from GIS as well, since I didn't bother trying to make it into Kanda myself. This is my ema. Yes, my handwriting is awful. To be fair, I saw a lot of people writing out their ema on their phones first, then using that as reference for all the difficult kanji, so it's not like I'm the only one who had problems! It says "I hope my niece is happy and healthy." There were some specialty ema for the year of the sheep, but they cost more than twice as much as a regular ema, so I left that alone. So anyway, that's the hatsumoude experience in a nutshell. Hopefully, the picture reference helps provide more context to how the characters act on this day, since it's a pretty significant portion of every run. vibratingsheep fucked around with this message at 18:06 on Jan 1, 2015 |

I actually just did something similar, but chinese. How to explain it... okay, so there's this big cup with a ton of sticks in it and two separate stones arranged like a clam shell. What you do is kneel on a cushion in a shrine, think your name and a wish, then start shaking that cup like crazy. Eventually a stick will fall out, and then you drop the stones. If one lands face up while the other one lies face down, that's your stick. It has a number on it, so you check a big rack of fortunes and grab the appropriate number. I had to try four times before I got the rocks to fall my way and got bad luck. The japanese version seems a lot faster.

Hokkaido For the past three days, I've been in Hokkaido. This place is something of an inside joke in the old visual novel/dating game circle, due to a Dreamcast game called Kita E. The game was developed by Red Company (Sakura Wars) and Hudson Soft (Typing of the Date, Bomberman). But most importantly, it was paid for as part of an effort to stimulate Hokkaido tourism, making it one of the most hilariously transparent advertisements in the history of the genre. I mean, just check out the opening song! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqqBgk7TdSA (fun fact: the voice of Mizuki-chama from Girl's Side is one of the singers in this group) Here is my crude translation of the lyrics - while I'm not fully confident in my translation of some of the more abstract lines, I do know that the translation over on animelyrics is atrocious. quote:To the north, let's go tra la la (the choruses repeat after this) I mean, how blatant is that marketing? Isn't it great? The full version is even better, because the second verse contains such gems as "The mackerel is delicious, the salmon roe is delicious". So anyway, the joke is that 16 years later, the marketing worked on me! It really is gorgeous up here, though. I missed out on the famous Sapporo Snow Festival and the most impressive parts of White Illumination were taken down on Christmas, but I've loved my time here. And the best part is that it's all built in grids that make sense, unlike the labyrinthine streets of Osaka and Tokyo. A lot of historic Hokkaido feels like New England to me, which isn't surprising at all when you realize that a lot of these landmarks were built by Bostonians. Oh, and that up there is Otaru canal, which is frequently used as a backdrop in... well, a lot of fiction, actually, but you can clearly see it in Tokimemo 2's class trip. The famous statue of William S. Clark is at the top of a hill called Hitsujigaoka, which I foolishly chose to hike 2.2km uphill to because I didn't want to wait for the bus. Protip: wait for the bus when it's January. The views were absolutely gorgeous and worth it, though. More general gorgeousness - the second picture is a sampling of what happens during Sapporo's White Illumination festival of lights. PS: the song was right, the scallops are in fact delicious here.

Okay this is barely related to the games at hand, but I figure sheep might know something. I've recently noticed that Japan seems to use the word "graffiti" (グラフィティー) in a weird way. The regular meaning in European languages is "unauthorized scribbles on walls", but it seems that isn't what Japan uses it for. Examples: Sentimental Graffiti (I think you covered this game a bit earlier, perhaps only in stream) Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti (saw this game speedrunned on AGDQ earlier this week) Koufuku Graffiti (manga, anime of it just started) Porno Graffiti (band, not sure if they still exist) It seems the meaning applied is more like "teenagers' exploration of their own life/goal in life" which, I guess, can be related to graffiti's role in hip hop culture. Edit: Someone else asked the same question in ADTRW, and an answer was found. Outer Science posted:found the answer by searching for 青春グラフィティ (youth graffiti), it comes from george lucas's "American Graffiti" which is a coming-of-age story lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Graffiti nielsm fucked around with this message at 20:16 on Jan 11, 2015 |

I'm glad I happened to be at my PC for the secret surprise Shining Resonance stream yesterday, because that poo poo was a) entertaining as hell, and b) dumb as hell. I was totally right about Excela's skirt, Sheep; it really is way too short: But she's still the best character in the game so far on all counts, even if she looks like a death knight who got bitten by a radioactive magical girl. She doesn't have a very high bar to pass, unfortunately.

Hello! I'm going to be streaming Shining Resonance for a while and putting the LP on hold a bit until the beginning of February, but I do have a poll to put forth for you loyal readers: What game in the Tokimemo series should Vibratingsheep run next? The choices are: 1) Translate my Tokimemo 2 Mei run that I did in December as the next part of the LP 2) Move on to Girl's Side 2 and save that Tokimemo 2 run for later 3) Play some side stories as a fun little break PS I start streaming Shining Resonance in a few minutes on http://twitch.tv/vibratingsheep - the M.O.E.S. system (yupppp) is so directly ripped from Sakura Taisen that it hurts me inside.

There are three relevant ones: Dancing Summer Vacation, which takes place in year 1 of Tokimemo 2, and was essentially a way to sell more copies of Dance Dance Revolution. (features: Miyuki, Miho, Kaori; guest stars two characters from Tokimemo 1: one a DDR master, the other a master of evil) Leaping School Festival, which takes place in year 2 of Tokimemo 2 and is more of a visual novel-style game that goes in depth on what happens when Mei and Homura start arguing about who's better at video games. (features: Homura, Mei, Akane; guest stars two characters from Tokimemo 1: one a master of competitions, the other a master of snark) Memories Ringing Off is kind of an epilogue to Tokimemo 2, as [Gunma] sits at a cafe a year after graduation and thinks about what happened back on Valentine's Day of year 3. Checking back in here because I'm starting to do the preliminary work for Tokimemo Girl's Side 2. I expect to start up next week. A few important setup questions: 1: Should I use the fan translation of the remake, or should I just translate it myself? Not gonna put up a poll for this one, because it's more complicated than a simple yes/no. On one hand, the fan translation makes the LP process take about half as long, since I won't have to translate everything by hand. On the other hand, this thread has told me that the translation was done by someone whose first language was neither Japanese nor English, which might lead to rage issues and spending a whole lot of time spent correcting screenshots. 2: Should I break the "Fudo GoonX" naming convention for this edition? I ask this because the framing story of TMGS2 involves mermaids, and I'm so drat tempted to name her a "kira kira name" like Ariel or Marina, which means I'd probably move the "Goon" to the family name... or I could split this down the middle and find some kind of oceanic kira kira name that be both goon-related and mermaid-related (which might be difficult). 3: When I introduce the cast, do you want Tokimemo 2 levels of detail (character archetype, motivation, voice actor's other prominent roles), Tokimemo GS levels of detail (picture, vague description), or Tokimemo profile levels of detail (full vital stats to the point of creepiness)? I leave you with a preview of what's to come: awkward sparkly boy-touching! Which reminds me. 4: What should the new thread name be? I welcome feedback on any of these! vibratingsheep fucked around with this message at 03:40 on Jan 27, 2015 |

Can you call the hero "Little Goonmaid" Somehow? Because that would be great. Also, I'd say translate the first bit yourself, then look at the fan version after and see how bad it is. As for three, no preference. I rub my boys in Tokimemo Girl's Side 2

1. Translate it yourself. While it will mean more effort to you, I can imagine that you, as a translator, will not enjoy working with a translation you know is faulty. I myself get pretty drat annoyed when I see a translation from Spanish to English (the only two languages I speak) or viceversa that is badly done, and I can imagine it is even worse for you. 2. Try to split it down the middle, but should that prove impossible, I'd say sticking to the Goon thing is more important, we have been using it from the very beginning without ever stopping, after all. 3. Tokimemo 2 should be fine, there's no need for the amount of detail from the last option, but some detail is always nice. If this goes as GS we'll end up finding most options horribly disappointing either way (seriously, I hope this game has more than one good love interest, much as I enjoyed Kazuma) 4. No opinion on the thread name, perhaps something relating to the mermaid theme, but I can't think of anything.
