Dave Cutler wrote VMS originally and that's where Windows NT kernel came from when he went to Microsoft. The 3.1/3.5 kernels basically are VMS with some principles of OS/2 thrown in. Not many know that some VMS applications would run quite fine on 3.1 and 3.5, moreso on the Alpha platform. A lot of that design principle and even some code still survive in the latest NT kernel.

Hence the "joke" :)

You can't fix a sewer main or fix an electrical panel with labor saving. It still requires a person to go out, dig up the poo poo, and physically cut out the old pipe and repair it. And yes, we don't have the massive amount of people that it takes to fix a road but it still takes quite an army of men. Between the transportation of materials, workers to run the machines and so on.

What? Yes you can. It takes far less labor hours to fix poo poo like that because of useful time saving devices and technological advancement that makes replacing water mains and grading roads and other things way way easier. Like seriously, the entire history of technological advancement thus far has been to do poo poo with less labor time, which either means that the same number of people do the same amount of work in less hours, or less people do the same amount of work with the same amount of hours.

Every time I think I'm posting to much, all I have to do is remember Viggen and I realize I'm okay.

The Suntrust loan officer I spoke to was not encouraging about the condition of the house I'm looking at. Apparently responsible banks are not into the idea of financing a home loan on a place that may need all of the porches ripped off the outside of the house. well duh, but it's only fifty grand, come off of it you pricks, let's sign a seven year loan and be done with it. WHERE IS MY PREDATORY AMERICAN LENDING.

In order of worry: There's an odd bump in the floor of the living room, soggy ceiling in the second bathroom (I wasn't able to get into the attic to check for leaks but it wasn't wet; looked like old water damage), and the aforementioned porches, the place looks like I could have it back to 80% in a year. I wonder what USAA is going to say.

hahahaha, yeah, banks don't like that. Also it will not take a year, remember that by the time you see visible water damage, there is some really nasty structural rot taking place normally.

I estimated I'd be done with my place and it'd be conventionally habitable by Christmas 2010. Or was it 2011? I can't remember.

Oh, I've got all the tools and paints and stuff, collected in my junior-high and high-school years building, though I bet a good chunk of my Testor's have dried up.
I'm not daunted by the complexity, particularly, it's just that I almost can't do a quicky build. I NEED to paint and detail at least the kit detail, not to mention the aftermarket stuff available for some of the kits. I have a '66 Olds 442 kit that I also have the aftermarket photoetched detail set for. That one I will probably keep, as well as my vintage RX-7 kits. I should at least finish my JoHan '70 442 kit, with added aftermarket W-25 OAI hood, and a Revell (I think) '69 Hurst/Olds chassis and drivetrain (much better detail.)
See? It's a disease, much like building full-sized cars, though the costs are a little less.

The only "rot" I saw was the cheap wooden siding at the base of the exterior walls. The underlying wood is solid and I couldn't carve anything out with my knife. Even the porch decking is not rotted, just 30 years old and sun-baked to the brittleness of plastic (1986 house). This was just the bathroom ceiling. It probably needed to be replaced 10 years ago. Hell, when I was a kid my dad had to replace the bathroom ceiling because we kids thought it was hilarious to squirt water on to the ceiling and watch it drip off :v:

The roof ain't leaking; I got some more data on the house and the (reputable; they did my grandparents house back in the 1980s and it STILL doesn't leak) roofing company stated it was a 20-year roof put on in 2004. I walked around on it and it had no give, even with my 270lb lard rear end up there. I inspected the roofing over the bathroom with the damage as well, solid.

The realtor is going to talk with the bank selling the property to see what kind of deal we can work out about satisfying my bank's home inspector.
