The shift to laws.... I liked how educational sliders were in previous HOI. Messing with the sliders you could make a really distinct government and they had more flavor.

This looks like the difference between nations won't be political at all beyond broad "fascist, democratic, communist" labels.

Is the difference between SU and the UK in 1944 only going to be that the UK has free trade and SU has a closed economy?

It feels boardgamey and not in a good way. Like instead of controlling the massive military industrial complex of one of the combatants, I'm playing a worker placement game where I'm trying to move my economy guy up the ladder.

Maybe if you gave the laws country specific names for the majors? Make them functionally the same, but just put a bit more flavor in there?

Like instead of saying "Partial Mobilization" if you're Britain, it would say "Blood, toil, tears and sweat." after the Churchill speech in 1940.

I like the idea of companies, but I'm not sure how they're going to work for the countries which didn't research their own hardware...

I actually do agree with his points about flavor law names and companies, though I imagine buying licensed units is going to be a lot more important in HoI 4 than it was before.

Also arent laws, as shown so far, basically expanded sliders? They exist on a continuum with discrete points which give bonus/penalties depending on how far from the extremes it is. The only difference I can see would be that laws might have a non linear cost to movement, and that laws dont have an equal number of possible points.

You heard the masses paradox, you need an equal number of terrible fascist policies that make normal people uncomfortable for this to be an acceptable change from sliders. Any less will be giving in to casuals and ruining any chance at Germany being a playable country.

There will be an achievement in HoI4 for making all of Hitler's historical mistakes (which is to say, every decision he ever made) and still somehow winning the campaign.

It will be called "Paradox Plaza's Choice"

Given the circumstances of CK1's development and the quality control of pretty much all pre-3D Paradox games, I'm willing to bet that it was a mistake that never got corrected because Paradox had bad QA. They were probably fixing so many fundamental stability issues and game-breaking stuff that fixing minor things like that never really crossed their mind.

Just wait until Victoria 3 is announced. I have a feeling that is going to really, really rile up the grogs after it becomes clear that Paradox will actually design the game with an economic system that makes some degree of sense, while being fun to play as well as somewhat transparent and immersive.

The earlier games had a lot of terrible mechanics that made sense in a board game, but were frustrating in a video game. Don't you remember in the early days of EU3, when sending a missionary or colonist was just a flat success/failure roll? Lots of micromanagement and very little fun. The eventual mechanism of just assigning colonies or missionaries, and having a ticking counter (while costing money) is much, much nicer.

The POP mechanism in Victoria 1 also smells vaguely board game-ish, as I cannot think of any other reason why they would divide POP productivity into coarse nonlinear brackets based on size, thus leading to POP splitting.

I think what he means is that a flat success/fail dice roll is something relatively easily worked into board game rules and balanced around, whereas a ticking counter that costs money over time would be trickier to keep constant track of during an actual pen and paper game.

Major points of rage I remember:
- 3D portraits - People wanted the old 2D ones with the coin style profile. Despite them being very limited in diversity and appearance. Also, big giant noses.
- IT'S CALLED CRUSADER KINGS - Lobbed against every expansion idea (not from the devs at the time) that doesn't focus on Feudal Christian Europeans. Inevitably the idea gets made and they get mad no attention is being given to fuedal christian europeans.
- India - See above.
- Sunset Invasion - The level of betrayal I felt...
- Formable kingdom and empire titles that did not exist in the time period - Mostly about how they should be titular, the only empires that should exist are the HRE and ERE. There was a lot of anger directed at the Wendish Empire in particular.
- DLC - Paradox, you're ruining my wallet and the gaming industry itself by nickle and diming us all the time! Why do you charge $2 for music or pretty horsies?! You're what's wrong with gaming! Go back to waiting years for expansions please.
- Online (only?) Distribution - Ra! Ra! Steam is evil! I only own physical CDs, you will all be sorry when the great internet crash of 2019 comes!

It's definitely the odd one out, though I think it could have been handled a little better. Give the Abbasids and such a punching bag that keeps them too busy from just spilling across the landscape like they were a patch or two ago.

I would just like paradox to flesh out everyone everywhere in one big mega event and mechanic expansion that helps Indians, Romuvans, Zuns, West Africans, everyone. Then everyone gets to be fun to play. :unsmith:
