Oh my God abortion is worse than World War 2! Raise taxes back to 90%, draft a few million people into federal service, institute rationing, and turn over huge portions of the economy to education, contraceptives, prenatal care, and child welfare to make sure we win the war on abortion and give women every possible opportunity to avoid pregnancy or get her child taken care of if she has it so there's no incentive for them to just kill their embryos in back alleys. Oh what's that, that doesn't keep women from having sex? Oh okay then, let's not fight the war, we'll just shut down the clinics and shrug it off when kids starve or their whore moms die in butchershops

Actually a lot of those guys are regular Army soldiers. Sometimes they're gendarmes but gendarmes aren't really normal police either, they're a branch of the military themselves and occupy a role about halfway between US state police and the National Guard. They do normal policing duties in rural areas but in bigger cities the normal beat cops are from the Police Nationale or the Police Municipale, with the vast majority being Police Nationale. The Police Municipale sometimes aren't armed but they're a tiny minority of police, Police Nationale officers are always armed.
