JaucheCharly posted:You mean linen or cotton padding. It depends on the time period really. Linen or cotton were used throughout history, but leather gambesons and chainmail were regularly used as well. In the early periods it was intended to supplement the armor, while in the latter periods it was intended to provide a light alternative to the armor.

Many attempts have been made to unroll the carbonized scrolls since they were excavated in 1752. But all were highly destructive, and scholars eventually decided to leave the scrolls alone in the hope that better methods would be invented. More than 300 scrolls survive more or less intact, with many more fragments. I'm curious to know just how many scrolls were destroyed in an effort to read their contents. Oh well, I look forward to the publication of some of these scrolls in the next decade or so, because if we're going to be realistic that's probably the minimum timeframe here.

armourchat: a few years back (5 or 10 maybe) there was a documentary in the UK about armour, and one of the guys involved had a pretty period accurate suit of plate that he was prepared to use in an historically accurate joust (with a solid oak lance; not the modern plywood poo poo) he took the hit, went flying off his horse, rolled on the ground and got straight up on his feet again. It was pretty impressive.

The idea of Lindy Beige being a historical advisor on anything is kind of upsetting. His arguments all seem to be based on stuff that makes sense to him based to re-enactions and common sense. Which is fine, but a historical advisor should probably be making recommendations based on period sources and actual historical evidence.

ColtMcAsskick posted:I hope you guys like epicurean philosophy because that is all those scrolls will end up being Eh, that wouldn't be the worst thing. Lucretius was pretty great, a whole bookshelf of unknown Epicureans would be a fine addition. A couple more of Epicurus' actual works would be fantastic. Hell, even being able to fill in the various missing sections of works we have would be nice. If you're thinking it's a philisophical bookshelf, how about filling in the many blank spots in Cicero's On The Nature Of the Gods?

Even if it's stuff we already have, having the manuscripts as they existed in ancient times might be interesting. Less chance of corruption in the process of copying/transmitting this stuff through hundreds of generations of humans.
