Hahahahah that it looks blank or with like invisible ink print or something makes it all the more wonderful. Edit: Oh, I see the staple now. Dang. Well still hilarious.

Also I would love to discuss how Delayed Reaction can get back into an AKO account but I have absolutely no idea what that means. Better get out the invisible-ink pen.

People think I am some sort of wizard for not writing down my passwords at work (though I only [only] have about nine different systems I use regularly enough for it to matter). Little do they know I pretty much Usual Suspects it and have my passwords functionally written down without anyone ever knowing.

It's fun when you work a joint program of programs and have to deal with everyone's acronyms. Oh and Homeland Security too. And NASA... At that point just nod your head and pretend to understand, the person speaking probably has no idea what they are talking about anyway. Or you could just make up acronyms and see if anyone calls you on it. Actually, I am pretty sure I know someone who has risen through the ranks doing just that.

As to AKO I have been locked out for a long time now and it says I need to contact the help desk for a reactivation. But then again I don't work for the Army and almost never need to use AKO these days. So it has worked out well for everyone.

I have a piece of paper taped to my desk right in front of my monitor with a bunch of logins and passwords on it. IT can go gently caress themselves if they give me poo poo about it. It's mostly the harder to remember ones that have weird requirements. Surprisingly, (or maybe not) the ones requiring the most complicated passwords are generally not the ones that have anything important or sensitive about them. Most of the important ones have the same password and I just rotate the ending every 3 months so it's not too hard to remember even when some of them are off-cycle relative to each other. The most complicated login I have? To put in my hours worked. I guess we're really concerned about North Korean hackers giving me some extra overtime. I think the second most difficult one is to register for training.

Hahaha. Now that you mention it ... my timesheet-equivalent program does have the most complicated password requirements, to the point that when we had "password training" the guys were like "come up with a password that meets all of these requirements and you can use the same one for every system! except the timesheet!"

Though I suppose in unimportant systems' defense the other two timesheets (other two timesheets) we use do not even have passwords. And the first timesheet has actually begun working just based on us having swiped our badge through our keyboard card reader as of the last month, rather than requiring that obnoxious password. Progress~!

There is a place on the announcement checklist that says SF-50. I'm just confused as to whether that and Proof of Eligibility are the same thing. I've been told I have to obtain this from about 5 different places including my boss (no way I can do that) and HR. I was hoping it would be easy to get and perhaps just be a document I could download from somewhere. I've already submitted the application and the announcement is closed now, so it may be too late for this job but I definitely need it for any I will apply to in the future. Thanks for your help!!

Here is part of the job announcement that I copied from USAjobs:

Proof of Eligibility to Apply: Your application must include the documents which prove you are eligible to apply for the vacancy. The “Proof of Eligibility” document describes authorities commonly used in merit promotion recruitment and what document(s) are required to prove you meet the requirements of the authority. You must meet the requirements of at least one of the authorities listed in the Who May Apply section above to receive further consideration.

There's a couple of places you should be able to get it. Some agencies have their own repository. My agency's official repository for SF-50s is eOPF, but I personally find it way easier to get it off of Civilian Personnel Online (CPOL). That might just be for the DoD.

If all else fails, you can send for it by snail mail. According to OPM's website:

OPM's FAQ posted:

Contact your former agency personnel office, if recently separated. Otherwise, send your request to:

National Archives and Records Administration
Civilian Personnel Records
1411 Boulder Boulevard
Valmeyer, IL 62295

Fax: (618) 935-3014
Inquiries should include the full name under which formerly employed, social security number, date of birth, and to the extent known, former Federal employing agencies, addresses and dates of such employment. The Privacy Act of 1974 (5 USC 552a) and the Office of Personnel Management require a signed and dated written request for information from the Federal Records Center. No requests for information from personnel or any other type of records will be accepted by telephone or e-mail.

Yes, yes, understandable.

To expand: They started hiring from the moment they made the announcement of the executive action, and the hiring is undoubtedly ongoing for months though I imagine they have already gotten a lot of the basic staff they are going to need to get going ... well, I mean, as far as I can tell, they have not actually HIRED anyone yet, but several of my Vermont Service Center co-workers got the "OK we probably want you, hold on" message. But ... yes. The pace of hiring is worrying even in the nearly-best-case scenario. It was 7 months from my application to my job offer (nearly 9 if you only count it as a real offer if they give you a start date, haha). But the Crystal City thing is probably going to be hiring on an accelerated schedule assuming the Republicans do not invoke the forgotten 1848 Shire Landsknecht Abrogation Law Takebacksies Screed and somehow stall the hiring, in lieu of being able to actually stop the program.

Yeah, though as my supervisor said, thanks to the Paris terrorist attacks, the idea of the Republicans threatening to stop funding Homeland Security seems like ... well. It is hardly something they would refuse to consider, but seriously, is "cutting off your nose, ears, and indeed entire head to spite your face" a thing?

Awesome, makes me feel much better. I've applied to three NCE positions from the PC job board as well as the PC NCE entry level program on Avue Central. From what I've seen on the Federal Soup forums, a decision on the interim really has no bearing on whether or not a full-fledged clearance is given. If you want to help calm her/yourself down, take a look here at some of the cases where people in bad financial situations showed that they were working to put themselves back on their feet and were ultimately granted a clearance.

It is a good practice to keep copies of your latest SF-50 and your last couple of annual performance appraisals uploaded in your USAJobs account. Even if the position you want to apply for doesn't use USAJobs, you can still use your account as cloud storage for those important documents. Same thing if you have Schedule A documents, vetpref letters, etc.

I am not a manager, but every manager I've interacted with so far in the government has not been like my managers in the private sector. In the public sector, they've largely seemed like glorified HR (as in, they deal with approving leave and poo poo) plus a smattering of office politics. Pretty cushy if you ask me, if cushy is what you're going for. It's what I'm going for because I am objectively a bad employee.

I will say that in USCIS the supervisors definitely seem more relevant than this, even if clearly that is part of their visible duties. So beyond the irritating approving/denying/et cetera leave or disciplining people and having meetings and everything, my supervisor also has to make sure every single denial any of her employees write is legally sound. I do not envy anyone the task of being the final person in the blame chain if something goes wrong, haha. Though my aspiration is probably being a Subject Matter Expert, which in some ways is undoubtedly more nervewracking. So, you know. No matter what, things get more intense as you go up the ladder, it seems.

Is it possible you have that perception because that is what all of your interactions with them consist of? My office is small, but I'm sure most of my employees think all I do is review their work. That's perfectly reasonable for them to think that because they don't see me meeting with industry groups, evaluating vendor bids, cold-calling to build new relationships, etc. I actually spend more time doing all of that than I do reviewing and approving their work.

Except, I can't seem to find the new listing. I searched for the original job title, searched all the posted jobs for that city, and tried hunting down the new announcement number directly. Nothing. I have your job in another state in the Philly region for SSA. I used to be a fed, but took this job to be closer to family. I've been trying to get into our ODAR office. Virtually all of us have at our DDS office. I've been waiting 6 months on some applications. I'm a former GS-9 with USCG applying for mostly GS-7s (still more than state employee pay).
