This video is great. I like that they released the Rhythm Wolf to horrible reviews, all of which mentioned the bass synth can't track consistently across an octave, then just repeated that mistake with a 4 voice synth.

Although part of me wants to see what kind of crazy detuned minimal techno grooves could be had from it.

If this holds up in real life this is literally everything I want in a synth.
Wonder if they'll do a rack version as well, that might be beter for my midget studio, but then that again poly step-sequencer really sells it.

This has all the appearance of a guy who knows neither machine is even close to ready, but NAMM deadlines mean the corporate overlords are going to make him show it off anyway. Kinda like how the rhythm wolf debuted with a "we swear it exists and works, but you can't play it yet" last year. There were parts in the TW demo I'm honestly not sure if that sequence was intending to play different notes or the tuning is that bad. Or they've decided to adopt a microtonal scale.

This of course totally justifies me getting the Prophet-6 instead of the Timbre Wolf, right? I can skip a few mortgage payments, right?

The press-release states something like that Yamaha gifted the name back to Dave Smith as he is the creator of MIDI and the way his open source protocol changed the way we make music today.
Which should teach us that it's better to co-exist and learn from each other than to compete each other in to shreds.

If that's the actual story we'll never know I guess, but it's nice to think this is how it went down.

I did notice that if you check out with a credit card it was horribly glitching and not working. I switched to "credit card with PayPal" and it worked fine.

They decided to launch a new website AND a new product at the same time which was... probably not the brightest idea.

Honestly I find the fact that the Timbre Wolf isn't even in tune with itself, on any level, kind of endearing. I really hope these things just tank in value because I would totally pick one up for $100 or something and make some detuned madness.

Yeah it seems like the timbre wolf could be just lovely enough to be pretty cool for techno and minimal, but $500 is absolutely insane!

I wasn't expecting the sq-1 to be so cheap - I was thinking about getting a beatstep at some point but this looks cheaper and would match the rest of my hardware better. I don't really understand the 2x8 step sequencer line though, surely you can chain them and do 16, 32 etc?

I also saw this pop up on one of the namm sites, $100 bucks for a little usb square wave synth with an analog filter, pretty interesting. http://www.ploytec.com/pl2/

It was a pretty terrible demo, but I took that as him tuning the voices apart from each other to demonstrate the poly mode cycling through the voices. Other params would would work though (which he kinda did) And hey! If you live the modular style step sequencers you've essentially got your self a 4 step sequencer!

In fact, I kind if like the prepared piano nature of that. Not enough to buy it, but it could make some interesting results.

Awesome track by the way! As long as other people are deviating from cheese and italo-disco as well I'm going to submit this track: https://soundcloud.com/fieldbalm/2arp

It's fine if it doesn't fit in! This is the first time in ages I just set up a couple of arps and tweaked some controls for the melody, I'm pretty happy with how it came out. It started off as a techno track but now I suppose its garage or something.

The pl2 looks really cool I just wish they had done USB midi instead of/in addition to the regular midi port. Maybe it's just a case of me needing to invest in some sort of MIDI splitter bay or something, but as it is right now it's incredibly hard to figure out how to route MIDI to a bunch of poo poo that doesn't have a Thru port. Too many dead ends!

One of these usually solves that problem pretty fast: http://www.midisolutions.com/prodqth.htm or I'm sure something homebrew can be wired up too.

The pl2 looks pretty neat, reminds me of the http://meeblip.com/ which has a bit bigger form factor.

So far NAMM's been looking pretty interesting, I wonder what surprises are still upcoming now?

Oh and Bonerjamz work is ongoing - finally went back to an 80s cheese synth Ableton set and trying to get my bearings to finish it. Half the fun of returning to a months-old set is just remembering where you were trying to go with it all.

Shut up and take my money korg!

Is it wrong I think the JD-Xi is kind of cool? The analogue part sounds really smooth and not like a MS-20/Brute at all so along with the R3 that's built on top of it isn't exactly a bad thing for the $500 it's suppose to go for. Also, the JD-Xa had pictures leaked and it looks like it has one more digital and one more analogue oscillator than the Xi in addition to the extra octave of keyboard which has me way more interested than it's smaller cousin.

All told though, the JD-Xi is literally the first thing from Roland that I've been excited about since I started up making music again.
