I did OK with MS Press' 70-417 upgrade book. It's worth a look over in a bookstore if they have it in stock, or Amazon's wonderful return program if it's not stocked.

It's not as expensive as most IT exams, and you can take it again in 5 days after getting an idea of how they ask questions if you don't end up passing.

Take your time would be my advice. I know that when I took it I answered some questions wrong, realized my mistake and then wasnt able to go back and fix the answers.

Make sure you 100% understand the question before attempting to answer. Cisco has a funny way of wording a questions, and there are afew "AHA!" moments that will surface throughout the course of the exam.

Failed with a 725. Looks like there were a few simple holes in my studies (Security, NAT and Switching needed refreshing). The printout with subject percentages is nice (100% subnetting, woo!). Should get it next Friday no problem. The exam was extremely easy compared to the labs I had been doing with GNS3 Vault and Workbench. I had been using this app to reinforce what I've studied so far and seems like it helped tremendously.

The servers I work with run Server 2008 R2 but I've read that it's worthwhile to just go ahead and get the 2012 MCSA/MCSE cert. What's going to acquaint me with the specific features of my hardware better? Should I do Server 2008 for my MCSA and then the 2012 upgrade path if I feel like doing MCSE later on?

Well, I had the same problem so I'm signed up for classes at the local community college.

Check out the Table of Contents for the textbook:

Need some advice on worthwhile Storage/Datacenter certs

I have a CCNA in route/switch already and I really enjoy the networking side of things, but I have some really powerful contacts within the Storage side of IT that could easily double or triple my current salary if I got the bare minimums down.

Is SGO-001 CompTIA Storage+ Power by SNIA exam the way to go, or are there there more relevant vendor neutral things to be focusing on?

God damn it, you've got to be kind.
While job searching I've seen an awful lot of IT project management jobs. I was looking at PMP certification but wouldn't be able to provide proof for the audit of the thousands of hours of project management I've done. I saw that there's a lower tier cert that looks like it requires classwork instead but I haven't heard of it and don't know if it has value.

There's also the agile/scrum stuff, and I see that there's two certs for that but have no experience with it at all.

I've done so much project management I feel like it might be a better way to spend my time than the MS admin and tech certs that always catch my eye.

The people I work with have emc and Cisco storage certs across the board, seems like the way to go.

Generic storage certs are pretty worthless. Pick a vendor and get their first level cert. EMC or NetApp are good first choices. The basics of storage are really easy, most of the specialization comes from learning vendor specific features.

Barely failed CCNA: Wireless yesterday. Word of warning for those of you planning on taking it: they cover a lot of last-generation Cisco stuff, so don't think you can just rely on your experience with Prime, ISE, or the current WLCs to carry you through. Otherwise I thought it was loving easy - I think the entire thing took me 30 minutes. If I can just do some rote memorization from the book on the outdated WCS stuff over the next two weeks, I don't think I'll have a problem the next time around.

Seconding this from NIpplefloss. In my opinion storage certs are a waste but getting the first tier from EMC or Netapp will grease the palms of HR . I have a few advanced certs from EMC that I felt were an utter joke and thankfully I spent about 3-4 hours total to take and pass. My Cisco certs were better written and more worthwhile as a whole.

Based on what job you're doing in the military they'll pay for certain certifications. My current job is teaching and CTT+ falls under that according to the Navy's credentialing program.

So yes, but it's not like my boss was like hey go get this because we want you to have it. I just choose to go get it since other people I've worked with have said it lines up fairly nicely with another Navy program that I recently went through.

They're also going to pay for my CAPM and PMP eventually. By no means should anyone join the military though because holy gently caress it's awful.

The 2k8 MCSA and 2k12 upgrade is the best option. 2k8 has tons of prep material out there and it's worth getting two MCSAs in four exams, given that the 70-417 is one exam to upgrade to 2012.

I forget if I've gone down my shpiel about the same topic in this thread but it's worth getting certified on what's the de facto standard, seeing as 2003 is dying as of June, IIRC. You'll be in a familiar environment as you spin up test VMs, more so than the weirdness that is 2012. It's also a good platform to learn and grow Powershell, which is touched a bit on in the exam.

Start with page 1. Go through the book. Read it. Write down relevant points in a notebook. Think of it like taking notes during a class or something. Spend your lunch break doing this - at least 30-45 minutes worth of it. Force yourself to take breaks. Write it into your Outlook calendar so nobody books you for meetings.

Spend 30 minutes a night, every night, going over what you studied.

Do the exercises as you go. Maybe during work downtime if you have any. Set a schedule and stick to it. Eyes on the prize. Beefcake. BEEFCAKE!

Passed TSHOOT. Was really simple once you got the hang of it. Interesting to note: Somewhere I read that you could only see the running config, which wasn't true. I could look up route tables, route protocols, interfaces, the whole shebang. Didn't try changing things. I got just shy of a perfect score. I'm going to blame Cisco's everlasting decision to display their tests in 800x600 resolution, regardless that I was on a 24" LCD monitor. I'm pretty sure I chose the wrong device, as I didn't note the scroll bars on some of the labs. The dude that was testing right next to me had some serous swamp rear end, kept boil farting pretty much through the exam. I thought the guy sitting behind me against the wall was going to choke to death. It should be me applying my Cisco skills, not how long I can hold my breath.
